View Full Version : PS3 and Panny Plasma okay?
tts42572 04-21-08, 10:07 AM Just pre-ordered a new Panny 50PZ800. So now I'm thinking I'll need a Blue-Ray player and it seems to me that a PS3 might make alot of sense since it would serve as a Blue-Ray Player, SD Upconverter, and also play some games.
I'm not a heavy gamer by any means....last gaming system I bought was the Sega Genesis. I know....it's lame...but been busy with college, work, kids, etc....
Just wanted to check to see if I should have any concerns about combining a PS3 with a plasma. I suppose there is just a little hesitation based upon the old perception of plasma.
I really doubt there is much to worry about if I use common sense. There is no way I'll be leaving games paused or be having any huge gaming marathons...I'll be lucky to find a few hours a week to game.
Just wanted to see if I should have any hesitation about buying a PS3 and if any plasma owners had positive experiences with PS3's and plasma and if you had any tips I should keep in mind.

BD movies will look great, and the PS3 is maybe the BEST choice for a BD player, go for it!
I'd put 100 hours or so on the TV before I played any games, displayed any static images, or watch anything with bars. After that, just enjoy the TV :)

I have my PS3 sitting vertical to the right of my Panny Plasma. Besides the fact BD looks great on my setup....the PS3 and Panny look damn beautiful sitting side by side.

Dubz4lif3 04-21-08, 12:05 PM Beautiful Setup! very similar to mines :)
dmusgrave 04-21-08, 12:47 PM Throw an XBOX 360 Elite in there and you have true beauty :)
greenjp 04-21-08, 01:31 PM This is just a variation on the "is it ok to play games on a plasma?" question.
To which I've become accustomed to saying "I play Xbox 360 games on mine all the time and haven't had any problems". So, as far as I can tell a PS3 will be just fine too, that is unless the power of teh Cell is more than the TV can handle! ;)

Rhino5167 04-21-08, 01:34 PM I have a PS3 and Xbox 360 hooked up to my Panny 50" PZ77U and it looks great!! Gaming is amazing on this set and the Blu-Ray movies are wonderful!
mbrodie617 04-21-08, 01:43 PM I have my PS3 hooked up right below it in my stand. All images look amazing on this TV. I started gaming on it once I had about 25 hours on it. I just couldn't wait. I kept the settings down and it's still breath taking. If you need to pause for any length of time, just power off the set and power it back up upon returning. As long as you're smart about it, your tv should be fine.
tts42572 04-21-08, 01:56 PM What about the "game mode" that is an option on the 50PZ800? Would that mode be beneficial to use when gaming? Guess I don't really understand what is different in "game mode" than normal mode.
I realize the 800's aren't out yet.....but what has "game mode" meant on other plasmas? Is it just a marketing gimmick? Or are there benefits to using game mode to preserve the plamsa display and/or make gaming "better"?

I use "game" mode for gaming on my PX80U. I have no idea if it actually does ANYTHING but change picture settings... but it looks good for gaming. I have HEARD that it does something to reduce input lag, motion blurring, etc. but I don't know if any of that is true.
PENDRAG0ON 04-21-08, 04:45 PM Game mode usually raises the picture brightness and can make IR more of an issue than it should be. I never recommend that it be used, it is another form of torch mode and isn't worth it.

The REAL point for the game mode is to reduce latency in the processing of the picture. This is so your movements with your controller, will be quicker to respond onscreen.

But if previous models without a game mode didn't have any latency, then it's really just marketing nonsense right?

mrbeefer 04-21-08, 11:37 PM I have a ps3 hooked up to my 50pz85u. When I play MLB the show 08, it won't play in 1080p, even though the game box says it outputs in 1080p. I tried playing with ps3 settings, but get nowhere. The game only plays in 720p. When you get to the main screen on the game it says this game is optimized for 720p.
What gives?

My guess is that this question should go to the PS3 forum not the plasma forum. You will have better luck getting your answer there.
Pano617 04-22-08, 12:18 PM I got the Panasonic 50" PZ77U on the way, it'll be here today! I can't wait to hookup the PS3 to it. The PS3 is one of the best blu-ray players out there...you get updates constantly that bring it up to date with new features. I use mine once and awhile for games, mostly movies...maybe now with my plasma i'll use it more for gaming too.
Go for it...the PS3 will be the centerpiece of your home theater.
OvrLpdIO 04-22-08, 01:45 PM I just picked up a PS3 for Blu-ray last night using the $100 back Sony Card deal found here:
