Hello,

I have a Universal Remote Model MX700 and it has been a few yrs since I had hooked it up to program it, since then have changed computers and a few new devices have been added to the media room so it is time to do some mx700 updating.

First off I realized I have a problem, my remote has this funky serial port connector, my new pc doesn't even have serial port input, so can I just use a standard 9 pin serial to usb adaptor (cant seem to find a female 9 pin to usb) but could just buy the male 9pin to usb and get a doublesided female to connect the remote cord to the adaptor i guess... (unless someone knows of a new cord i can get that has usb output or a proper 9 pin female to usb adaptor?).

Second question has to do with PS3, I got it for bluray but have a sinking feeling I won't be able to program remote codes into the mx700 since the ps3 remote is bluetooth - am i correct on that or does the ps3 also accept regular remote codes too (would love to ditch the ps3 remote if possible).

Thanks for any input on either subject, just wanna get my mx700 up and going again here...

Bill :)

Check out the cable on this link:

Some of these cable adaptors do not work well. The one I have works great but it looks like it is not made anymore. You will have to play with your com port settings in the universal software as well.
Nyko makes a DVD player remote that comes with a USB IR window to allow control of the PS3 without using bluetooth. You may loose some buttons like power, angle and eject. You might be able to issue a play command to turn it on and then plug the PS3 in to the auxillary power outlet on your surround receiver to turn it off...

1. I just use a serial to usb adapter that I bought at Radio Shack. It works flawlessly with my MX700 (WinXP).

2. I'd suggest a Bluetooth converter like PS3IR or IR2BT. These will let you use your MX700 with the PS2 codes provided by URC. I use the original PS3IR with my MX700, and it's never missed a command.

Any chance you have the item number for the radioshack adaptor?

I took a peek at their website but didn't see one with a female end (which is what I would need to mate up to my mx700's cord that has male 9 pin end).

Hmmm my MX700 serial cable has a female end to it. Re-reading your original post, I'd say go with a standard usb to serial adapter, along with a female to female gender changer, as you suggested.
