View Full Version : LG PG60 Plasma
I am seriously lookinga at LG PG60. There is very little review or mention on any sites about it. I have a 70" Sony SXRD Qualia and several LCD's, and would like to purchase a plasma for my game room, although there is a lot of windows in the room. I saw the LG60 in a showroom, but wasn't able to compare to LCD or rear projections. Any help or comment would be appreciated. ARJ

Where did you see a PG60 series? As far as we know you can't get them yet. However, it is suppose to be anyday.

Depends...What size is it. 60" that does sound good, but if it's only a 50" that's too much.
It's 60". I'm concerned about the amount of relection in the room. I'm bebating between 52" sony XBR5 and this LG 60 (60"). According to what I've read on this site, the new LG 60 is brighter and only has one glass to help in the reflection issues from well light ambient light rooms. Any thoughts. ARJ

I owned a 46XBR4 and can tell you from first hand experience to forget about the XBR5. Dark colors will smear across the screen when watching movies or playing games. It might look ok in the store using torch mode but when it's adjusted and you want the deep blacks it becomes a mess. The only way to correct it is to wash out the picture which defeats the purpose. I had a Panny 50PZ85U which uses the traditional glass and found glare to be a non-issue.

Hometheatrestore.com is the only place i've seen that "might" have the pg60 series anything, but they never responded to my email and I haven't called yet because I was pretty sure they don't have it. So the pg60's are in stores somewhere huh?
The price you saw for the 60 was better than what they want here, so probably a good deal.

What did the respective black and brightness levels look like on the PG60? How did the overall picture look, (detailed, noisy, clean, sharp etc..), and how did it compare to the new Panny's and Samsungs (which I have seen). This set really looks sharp as far as the design and the specs are very intriguing but the bottom line is it's all about the good ol' eyeballs. I too have a fair amount of windows including a large picture window directly behind the couch (with vertical blinds) so brightness levels for daytime watching are important as well.
I'm looking at replacing an aging but decent 55" CRT RP and was initially looking at the Samsung LED DLP's due to the screen size/dollar ratio but the plasmas just have a beautiful picture that I'm afraid would lead to buyers remorse if I went DLP. Since I refuse to go down in screen size and the Pio's are out of the budget, this new LG is looking like it may be the one for me. So, until they show up in my neck of the woods I need to borrow your eyeballs:).
my first post.. looking for advice..
i have a panasonic 50 px77u 720p (which i love) over the fireplace but sold my house with that included. I have a 4 year old mitsubishi 55 rptv 1080i that will go in new house basement. I was initially looking at the pio 1150 50 inch 720p for above the new house fireplace.. but the av dealer is swaying me towards the lg 60inch pg60 sight unseen .. $2195 for the pio and $3295 for lg.. the room is 24 by 16 with the fireplace on the 16 foot wall.. will be sitting approx 10 to 14 feet from fireplace and tv.. fireplace mantle is 68 inches wide 52 inches above floor and has 80 inches between windows on either side of the fireplace .. glare is not an issue.. there is also 71 inches above mantle to ceiling and a cathederal ceiling in that room which is why i am now leaning toward the lg.. everything i read about hte pg60 is positive.. although some negative reviews from consumers on previous models .. i have never seen a negative review on pioneer .. lg is trying to be number 2 tv plasma maker behind pio with aggressive marketing and . they scored better in jd power for 2008 in plasma category second behind pio.. I asked my rep about the 58 panny but he likes lg better
any thoughts?
Well, I'm far from having my opinion offered as creditable. But, since you asked. I've visited the AV Store twice now, and there is a lot of interest in the LG 60. They are currently taking orders for delivery in May some time. It's difficult for me to compare Plasmas to Plasmas since I'm in the info gathering stage myself and being such a novice with plasmas. And since I have a 70" Sony qualia (SXRD), which has an incredible picture in my media room, my basis of comparison is slanted. I can say that the picture appears less muted to me as compared to my Qualia. Now, I know the LCD's are inherently brighter as so many of you have said, and the SXRD technology of the Sony rear projection is crystal clear, but the LG isn't quite as sharp, crisp , it's muted, softer may be the word. I'm gong back over there tonight after work to look at it again. It certainly fits my application in my game room for wall mounted application, and the $$$ isn't too bad for a 60" since I paid a ton of $$$ for the qualia several years ago. I'll give another impression tomorrow. May be some of you videophiles can give me some questions to ask the AV store along with some hints to what to look for to determine the quality of the picture. I'm trying hard to talk myself into purchasing it. HELP PLEASE!!! ARJ

Thanks for the update, I hope I didn't put to much pressure on you as I certainly wasn't expecting a full tech report, just your observations:).
As far as the muted picture part, that could be the crappy source, settings (hopefully) etc... As far as comparisons to other plasmas, here's my observations on some current models. With the Panny 80U next to the Sammy 550 I found the Panny to have MUCH better blacks (read darker) than the Sammy which I would almost classify as dark gray no matter what setting and that was very disappointing. The whites on the Panny were definitely more 'white' though the Sammy had very respectable white levels.
The no real winner issue for me is that the Panny had what I can only describe as a noisy haze with the picture that remained no matter what the settings. The Sammy on the other hand had with the same exact source and had what I would call a beautiful, razor sharp, highly detailed 3D image compared to the Panny plus it has way more adjustments, but the dark gray black levels are an absolute deal killer for me, in fact the store had a Sammy 5884 from last year that I dare say had what appeared to be better black levels.
Again, in a preemptive strike, I know the Pioneer has far superior black levels, and no doubt the best processing available on a plasma tv, but for ME, it's out of my budget and the reason for the strong interest in this LG panel. If it has the black levels of the current Pannys and the overall image quality equal to or better than the Sammy 550, combine that with it's very sharp styling and a price in my budget for a 60" I very well could be taking one home.
If that store or any other store close has the Panny and Sammy it would be great to hear how you think the LG compares on the points I brought out.
Enjoy shopping!

So what happened with this, turn out not to be a PG60 afterall?

Guess not, the pg60 is not out yet.:)
I chose PG60, but did not buy yet. I'm waiting for a month or so. Still in the info $$$ gathering stage on pricing. What I've seen and read, it's the best bang for the buck.
Follow Who? 06-11-08, 04:33 PM DrJ,
I'm in VB as well and interested in this TV. Where did you see it? I've got a Mits 65" DLP that has just stopped responding to any commands from the remote or TV front panel except for 'power' and just blew it's second bulb since I bought it 18 months ago. I'm on my 5th service call for this thing. Mits is refusing to replace so I'm moving on. I'll never do another DLP again and don't want to loose to much in screen size. I like the size / price ratio on this thing and would like to see it in person. Thanks.

I'd be interested in knowing as well. I'm really interested in the 50" but I'd love to get a look at either one. I'm considering the 50pg60 and the Panasonic 50pz800u.
