View Full Version : 12vdc converter box?

I'd like to get a converter for the boat. I'd like it to be as small as possible (ideally no larger than the typical external CDROM drive or radio head unit) and run off of 12vdc. Any suggestions on whose units fit these criteria?

Given that it's on a boat I don't hold much hope of "decent" reception as even current analog station reception isn't great. The current TV it'd be converting for can be driven by RF channel 3, composite or S-video. The set (a 15" Sharp Aquos) does have component inputs but there's no wire leading over to it from the 'idea' location for the converter. A small enough converter might allow placement in a much closer cabinet, lessening the hassle of running component cabling.

So, any suggestions? And, no, I do not want to run a 110vac unit through an inverter.

A few days ago I found the specifications for a converter box that used an external power supply with a 12vdc output. But I do not remember that product's identity.

I have browsed around a little today but have not located that converter box again.

Perhaps someone else will provide that information.

DigaDo are you saying that the converter box shipped with a car adaptor?
All of the external power supply models I have seen all ship with a AC adaptor but could potentially be used with a car adapter such as the PowerLine 0900-21 if the voltage is the same.

The specifications I saw did not mention a car adapter but I would assume there is such a product widely available.

I have a buddy who asked me to watch for a converter box with a 12vdc input for his trailer.

Perhaps this is the Artec model I noticed:

These website sellers offer this model:

When checking please be sure to ask if the CECB unit you are asking about AND your TV are BOTH NEGATIVE CHASSIS GROUND because if either is positive ground you will be unhappy when your supply shorts right through the RF's F-Connector's shield and supply lines.

The consequence may be more than a fuse! :(

Check from the negative supply lead of each to the 3/8" 24-TPI outer mandrel of the RF out (To TV) jack on each for direct connection.

I have 3 of these:

I use one at home fed by an attic antenna, so if power goes out I still have Tv.:)

Got 'em for $50 each.

As people actually buy boxes and post the voltage they use
and if they are positive/negative ground.

I will scroll back to my list and append each model number
with confirmed facts from actual owners.

I prefer them as posts, not PM's
so everyone can see what I was told.

Circuit77,

There are many boxes out there that possess an external Power-Brick/Wall-Wart power supply. On the other side of the coin are people that want to run these on battery for whatever reason. Houseboat, kids in back seats, power outage, camping, etc.

So far thats just a list of external supply type boxes. As reports from actual owners start getting posted, I will start editing the list above with actual details like voltage and chassis polarity. Polarity is more important.

I welcome everyone to consider any and all boxes on the above list of course.

But the one with all the good features has been riddled with questionable business behavior. I am of course refering to ConvertMyTV/MaxMedia.

I sidestepped them and went hunting for the manufacture. Found the one I believe to be it.

I am currently in negotiations for a sample unit for full technical review.

Here is a link to that thread

Forgive the mess, we had an idiot posting there and getting under everyones skin.
He is banned, his posts are gone,
but other people need to clean up their reaction now...
All in good time, I'm sure people will retract them.
Just overlook that and read my hunt from the top for the elusive box with all the goodies. :)

I skipped straight to my post that contains the attached owners manual in PDF form.

This forum has a half-meg attachment limit, and doesn't respect Win-RAR file extensions.
So I had to split it in two and falsely name them .ZIP's
Just remove the .ZIP from each and unpack to a single PDF file again.

If you achival client wont unpack them,
Win-RAR can be used (for free) here:

How about a laptop computer with a DTV USB stick?

wkearney99

Well, when I asked about a 12vdc ATSC converter, to connect along with a DVD player and component cabling. That generally isn't an indicator of desired laptop usage. As in, no that's a dumb idea. Things on a boat move around quite a bit and this gear is to be hard mounted.

That and I'd prefer to avoid the 'adventures' of futzing around with a laptop just to watch TV. Yeah, it CAN be done. But you can also start a fire rubbing two sticks together, I'll take a less hassled approach of just turning on AV gear and not having to wait for things to boot, software to get upgrades and all that rigmarole.

So it's no cleared which ATSC converter best suits my needs. The search continues...

I don't think the DTA1010 is a Externally Powered Unit:
AccessHD says "Internal high efficiency switch mode power supply"
They others say "External high efficiency switch mode power supply"

So I think these two can be removed from your CECB list
AccessHD - DTA1010-D
AccessHD - DTA1010-U

This one deffinitally is not externally powered
It has an attached AC power cord.
Look at the Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bBi19EAvS8)

So this on can also be removed your CECB list.

Does the one with the AC cord look like this? http://www.tivax.com/STB-T9.htm I see two different looking models online.

Also is referenced here http://octopus.freeyellow.com/CECB_list_wip.xls

Look at the Video Consumer Electronics Group made (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bBi19EAvS8)for the Tivax STB-T9 you can see the AC power cord
By the way this is the only CECB by Tivax although they do sell non-CECB Converters.

Now your beginning to see why my outlook is wait for someone that has one is his hand, or at leats has pics for the list updates.

I've seen several .XLS spreadsheets. I've seen that one, Hol_Ands one, another one and a WiKi list. To many non-consistancies.

To reference this exact Tivax, I noted a set of three pics posted by SatPro in the Tivax thread here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1007580#11

That seemed conclusive enough to remove it, even though the reason I put it on my ''Potential'' list was an .XLS spreadsheet just like those oddly (LOL).

Stephen M. Powell started the original spreadsheet hosted on his site http://octopus.freeyellow.com then holl-ands took over for Stephen.
Wikipedia uses the spreadsheet as reference. This is why all three sources would be similar.

The reason Tivax was listed as a possible 12vdc CECB is because that is how it is listed on their site.

I'm going to pull the speadsheet at http://octopus.freeyellow.com/CECB_list_wip.xls in a couple of days.

When I started it there weren't any other speadsheets so I scoured the Internet for whatever scraps of info I could find. Now that there are holl-ands and the Wiki versions that are better maintained, it's time has past.

I'll put the following note in it's place. If you know of any other good speadsheets or lists, post the URL in a reply.

Stephen,

Let me express my gratitude for your front-running work in compiling and sharing those details with us since early '08. Your spreadsheet was very useful. I know it helped me get up to speed on sorting out my options.

I was looking at the EZ Digital TV product matrix and noticed the KingBox looks like the Artec offerings. Are these the same manufacturer?
