View Full Version : False wall construction advice????
chadmoss 04-22-08, 12:25 PM I know that this is a crude drawing of my room...but I will try and then post pictures if needed. My question is should I build the right side of my false wall the same side as my left wall even though the right side is larger? Or should I go all the way over to the wall with the right side. Will this make my screen look like it is off center (which it already is...a little.). The wife says go all the way to the wall....I say build it the same as the other speaker tower covering and leave a gap between the false wall and the room wall and just put a bass trap in that corner. Thanks for the help.
BIGmouthinDC 04-22-08, 12:39 PM I would mount an Acoustical panel with some kind of theater decor design on the back of the door and then mount a matching one on the right front wall. Then everything will look balanced.
imprez25 04-22-08, 12:58 PM I am doing this on my theater to help "center" the screen that will be off center of the room. I plan on installing accustical panels along the front to help absorb some of the reflections.
chadmoss 04-22-08, 01:45 PM yeah...good idea. So are you saying leave the gap between the false and regular wall and mount the acoustical panel in the gap? or go ahead and make the false wall all the way to the regular wall and then mount the panel on the false wall?
imprez25 04-22-08, 02:16 PM Build the false wall where you have it and build a mirror image on the opposite side and center the screen between the two walls. This would give your screen a much more centered look.
chadmoss 04-22-08, 09:57 PM Here is a picture that maybe will help. If I build the other speaker tower covering frame like the other one....it will leave about a foot gap between the false wall and real wall. I couldn't put the same size acoustical panel on that side as I would on the door. So...now what do I do?
BIGmouthinDC 04-22-08, 10:32 PM I think you are basically headed down the wrong path.
I'm not sure it makes sense to build anything that goes up to the ceiling in that space. It will draw attention to that big awkward notch and the vent. I would just raise the l/r speakers about a foot on some nice bases. Cut the foot pads to the exact dimensions of the sub to clean up the look. Figure out how to disguise the HVAC vent with a painted louver.
Then call it a day and enjoy your theater.
Save the stage and false wall construction for the theater in the next house.
By the way what does the other end of the theater look like? Maybe that is where the screen should go.
Another thought. I would clean up the ceiling line and create a flat ceiling by boxing in and putting up drywall for that notch. But I need to see the other end of the room to be sure. The room would look more "normal".
chadmoss 04-22-08, 11:18 PM Crap! I really wanted to hide that stupid HVAC vent with a false wall. I thought that with just GOM material it wouldn't do much harm to the return because air could still get through it and I could hide my speakers as well. And also I thought that it would make the "notch" in the ceiling kinda not so visible. Oh well....if anyone has any other ideas...please let me know what you would do.
Cnd Joe 04-23-08, 12:04 AM how about get some black acoustic T bar ceiling tiles and track and fill in that long groove in your ceiling?
Then you can make your false wall to the ceiling.
BIGmouthinDC 04-23-08, 08:51 AM There are plenty of ways to hide that vent. Get a wood louvered cover, paint to match the wall and mount so that the louvers hide the white filter.

chadmoss 04-24-08, 12:02 PM So you are saying that you wouldn't frame out that notch in the ceiling to put a false wall there also? I was planning on covering that with a false wall too.
imprez25 04-24-08, 12:30 PM Here is a, very poorly done, sketch of what I would suggest if you want to go through the hassel of building false walls and a stage. Mind you that this took me longer to uploaded on to this forum than it did for me to draw. :) I think it would look nice and focus your attention to the screen vs across an entire wall.
chadmoss 04-24-08, 12:54 PM YES...YES...YES....that is what I was planning on doing in the first place. I was just wanting to know whether or not to build the tower to the ceiling (the one that is not built yet) all the way to the wall or build it the same dimensions as the one that is already there. If I dont do it all the way to the side wall, there will be a 1 ft gap to the wall (from the false wall to the side wall) and I was wondering if I did build it all the way to the side wall, would that extra 1 ft make the screen look off center more than it is? Thanks man for your recommendation.
chadmoss 04-24-08, 02:20 PM And also...what did you say to do with the HVAC? I couldn't read what you put in the box by the vent. Couldn't air still get through if I just put GOM around the HVAC vent framing?
dc_pilgrim 04-24-08, 03:16 PM Your GOM will become a dust filter.
Maybe a marquee (perhaps geometric instead of curved) with the underside all painted black? Makes things fade away.

imprez25 04-24-08, 03:54 PM Sorry about the size I had to shrink the image down so it would upload (like I said it took longer to get the damn thing to upload than it did for me to draw it!).
But what I wrote on it was to move it forward to the new front wall. Do not cover it with cloth, or like dc_pilgrim said, it will be come a filter and get clogged with dust and other unsightly things. Bring it out to the front of the new false wall (or a marquee) and paint it and your front wall black, you'll never see it again! :)
