View Full Version : Screen Wall Baseboard Color?
DMILANI 04-22-08, 08:07 PM Hi all. It's been a while since I've hung out in this forum, but I wanted to run a question by some of you folks. My screen wall is pretty simple, as seen below. GoM black fabric stretched over a frame, with a Dalite Hi-Power screen finished off with a Dalite Pro-Imager vertical mask.
I've always wondered whether it would look better to paint the baseboard directly below the screen black, or keep it sandstone gray to match the rest of the room. Any thoughts? I'm thinking it might look better black.

Oh, and here's the rest of the room. I just upgraded my projector to an Epson 1080UB and absolutely love it (replaced a 5 year old Sony VPL-HS10)

mtbdudex 04-22-08, 08:42 PM Your HT looks great.
Can you see them when the movie is on or just when the lights are on?
My 0.02, I'd leave them matching gray, as is.
usualsuspects 04-22-08, 08:57 PM If the rest of the screen wall is black then I would vote for black if is it is distracting in film mode. It might come down to a question of lights on vs lights off looks. If the gray is not bothering you during film viewing, and you like the lights on look it has, then why change?
I think if you are asking the question then you know the answer.
(Theater looks great)
BIGmouthinDC 04-22-08, 09:28 PM Great space. Another B099er I see. I thought I was pretty much alone.
DMILANI 04-23-08, 07:30 AM Thanks for the comments. Yes BIGmouthinDC, I got these 5 years ago or so when there weren't too many Berkline choices like there are today. I'm 6'5" and these were the only ones that were comfortable to me.
I do notice the baseboard sometimes during movie watching, so that's why I'm pondering. I just don't want it to look "odd" with the lights on.
Kevin_Wadsworth 04-23-08, 08:28 AM I kept my baseboard the same color as the rest of the room - I think having it change color for the front wall would look odd. But then again, the "purpose" for the room is to enjoy it when the lights are down and the movie is playing, so if it distracts you - change it.
Nice room! I just installed the same projector last weekend. Upgrading from a 12-yr-old RPTV, ti makes me smile every time I've turned it on.
BIGmouthinDC 04-23-08, 08:39 AM You could build a small free standing "stage". Cover it with black carpet and park in front of the molding.
It would add a little architectural interest to the front end and obscure the baseboard.
Maybe just something the width of the screen frame. a rounded front tapering down at the sides. Coming out 16 inches at the middle and down to 8 at the sides.
mn_hokie 04-23-08, 09:32 AM I say either leave it as is, build a stage, or paint the trim in the entire room one dark color. You don't want to have black trim up front and white everywhere else. To me, that would be more distracting than noticing a little white during film.
DMILANI 04-23-08, 09:56 AM Thanks guys. I like the stage idea. If I designed the stage to be about the width of the screen, would I keep the exposed baseboard to the left and right gray? I'm thinking yes.
The beauty of carpeting the stage black would be that I don't have to match my existing carpet. I could just get a fairly cheap remnant from a local carpet place or Home Depot.
mn_hokie 04-23-08, 10:08 AM I would run the stage from wall to wall.
mn_hokie 04-23-08, 10:09 AM Something else you could consider would be curtains to the left and right of the screen. These would help with absorption, and would also mask the vertical trim as well.
DMILANI 04-23-08, 10:14 AM Curtains would look nice, but my left/right speakers are behind the acoustic fabric to the sides of the screen.
dbbarron 04-23-08, 12:49 PM +1 vote for the stage, otherwise, paint it black. Even a little stage would look good.

+1
What ever you do be consistent with the color of your trim. I have seen where someone did the two color trims and where the two meet it looks very odd.
My .02

Stew4msu 04-24-08, 12:29 AM I'd paint all the trim and baseboards black.
