View Full Version : How to get Multi-Channel Sound from MP3s
Will Munshower 04-23-08, 04:43 AM This may have been answered before, if it has, I cannot find it.
I have a PS3 40 connected via HDMI to an Onkyo 605. I figured out how to get 2 ch CDs to play on all speakers on my 5.1 system by unchecking the 176.4 kb sample rate box.
However, any ripped MP3s that are streamed by TVersity to my PS3 will only output on my 2 mains, even though the Onkyo displays 5.1. I found that if I change the digital input on my 605 to 'PCM' from 'auto', I will get 6 ch sound.
My question is: Is there a setting or group of settings on the PS3, 605 or TVersity that will allow me to matrix 5.1 sound from a 2 ch source? A way other than the method I use now. It can be a pain if you forget to change it back. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Best regards...Will
P.S. If this has been addressed already, I apologize profusely for asking a question that was already answered. I used every search term I could think of.
hermitd 04-23-08, 08:13 AM when the source is stereo and you are trying to output 5.1 or multichannel in short, your system uses dolby prologic II to convert it to multi-channel.
more on dolby prologic here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prologic)
Will Munshower 04-23-08, 08:27 AM The problem is that the only choices I have are 'multichannel' and 'direct'. Neither will allow more than the L+R speakers to work. I can apply just about any DSP to every other 2 channel source but the MP3s ouput from the PS3.

Try this. For PC to PS3 just keep normal two channel
From PS3 to Onkyo use direct (i presume its optical or coax)
Onkyo is presume is a high end reciever !! it should have something called mode that you can change, try setting that to use Pro Logic

The PS3 is connected to my Onkyo via HDMI. The PS3 is connected to my network via a gigabit connection. I initially had the same problem with CDs being played by the PS3 (I'm still relatively new to it) I had figured out that if I uncheck all of the 176.4 khz sample rate boxes, I could matrix the other 4 channels qutie easily using Dolby PL II.
The same cannot be said for MP3s coming from one of my servers or off of my NAS. If they are encoded as MP3s, I can only select multi-channel or direct, which only yields 2 channels. However, if I force the Onkyo's HDMI input from auto to PCM, all is good. This procedure is a pain, though...Once a Blu-Ray disk is thrown in, the audio gets trashed (no dialog, for one thing). Also, I have a few CDs that I directly copied to my hard drives. The PS3 sees the wav files as PCM and it will allow me to matrix to 5.1
I checked all through TVersity. I even disabled transcoding. I also cannot find any setting on the PS3 that would cause this.
That's pretty much all I can think of. Another item that irks me is that the Onkyo displays 5.1 input. This should not be a problem!
I know there has got to be a way...Will

Check your audio output settings for HDMI on PS3 under Settings --> Sound Settings --> Audio Output Settings. Make sure that only formats that are supported by Onkyo 605 are selcted. I believe that you can also perform an automatic selection for the HDMI output.
Disclaimer: I do not own the PS3. I just looked up the manual online.
Hope this helps.
Will Munshower 04-23-08, 02:21 PM I tried all of your recommendations. Unfortunately, none of them allowed 5.1 to be matrixed from 2.0. I really appreciate your time, though.
I'm going to continue to change the digital input on the Onkyo when I want to play music. God...I have become so lazy. I remember when a remote control was my Dad telling me to go change the channel.
A small price to pay for surround sound, I suppose. If there was any manufacturerat at fault here, I cannot figure out who it might be. Que sera, sera...Will
Will,
I have the same rig and after doing a lot of reading, I was under the impression that the 605 cannot apply DSP to signal supplied by PS3 via HDMI....can someone confirm? I believe I read that when I was shopping for the 605.

It works fine matrixing regular CDs. I do remember reading something similar, as well...I just cannot recall what it was. Either way, changing the digital input from 'auto' to 'PCM' does the trick for MP3s. I'd prefer less of a workaround but this will do. Regards...Will
P.S. Ah...I remember. The 605 cannot matrix the advanced codecs from 5.1 to 7.1. Is that the same article that you read?
I have the exact same set-up and I have read that this is a bug with the PS3. Just so everyone understands, none of the PLII or any other processing can be applied when listening to MP3s or 2 channel Xvids when connected with HDMI (on the Onkyo 605. Other receivers may not have this problem). Of course there are work arounds, but its a pain to have to adjust the PS3 sound options everytime you want to play different types of media or games. My Onkyo 605 see the incoming signal as a 5.1 source, but only the front left and right speakers have sound. Selecting "Direct" instead of "multi-channel" sounds worse, as the bass seams to be absent. I hope Sony is aware of this problem and plans to fix.
