I have the HV20 and want to output my recorded HDV as DV/DVD (burn a copy for friends). Is that possible from the Hv20? I tried and it would not let me. I was thinking it would downconvert.

Has anyone done this with the HV20? I have a panny DVD recorder with a Firefire input for DV. Or do I have to copy to my computer and use some tool to convert from HDV to DVD.

The Firewire port on your recorder only reads DV, the Firewire port on your HV20 only output HDV. Yes, you do need high power computer and applicable software to do that, and more. The lesser method would be using S-Video or Composite.

You can output SD through Firewire from your HV20. Change the DV Output in Play/Out Setup2 from HDV to HDV/DV, then you should be able to record your footage onto a DVD+/-R via Firewire to your DVD recorder.
