hookingup a friends ps3 to his onkyo 605. if there were one disc to buy that has stellar dts-ma, and live 2.0 as a bonus, that would be great...any recommendations?

There are no discs that have both profile 2.0 features and MA.

Get AVP:R

Yes it's a horrible movie. I wanted to hate it. But it's really entertaining. And the sound will certainly make you smile.
I'm super picky with audio tracks. But this is my new audio showcase.

The Orphanage has a better track and it's just as impressive(maybe more). But if you want bombast that makes you say 'oh S$%#' Get AVP:R or
Mr & Mrs Smith(Best HD audio track so far in my opinion).

I believe Saw IV has both a 7.1 DTS-HD MA track and a Profile 2.0 feature. I haven't viewed this BD, but the audio is apparently very good.

You're right. I still don't like the idea of a saw movie being profecient in anything.;)

Flyboys and ID4 sound a little thin.
But Pan's and Man on fire are right on the money.
I,Robot is good, but it's no showstopper.

+1 This was the first DTSMA movie I watched after the new PS3 firmware and it blew me away. Go to the tunnel sequence or the truck/jet sequence.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith has an excellent DTS-MA audio.

IMO, there aren't any 2.0 features out there that make you say Wow. Quite the opposite. My reaction was more, "That's it?"

As far as DTS MA goes, I would have to also recommend Live Free Or Die Hard, especially the tunnel sequence and the F-35 sequence.

what scenes in Pans Labrynth are yall using for demo material? It has been a while since I watched it and I cant for the life of me think of what scene would blow people away. Everyone always lists it as a great demo disk. So Im obviously having a brain fart.

The Golden Compass should be good if you can wait until next week.

Was thinking the same thing from an audio persepective.

Kingdom of Heaven is a good choice for DTS-MA. Check out the cavalry charges, and of course the siege of Jerusalem.

I second Kingdom of Heaven. However, if you are trying to impress another person, I think it helps to match that person's taste in movies. If they like science fiction, I, Robot could be a great choice. If they hate science fiction try something they do like and so on.

Well i have used Live Free or Die Hard as my first try and loved it. I still need to try Sunshine for it as well. The movie is full of great subwoofer action

I appreciated the attention given to the littlest of sound details in Pan's Lab. Seemingly trivial sounds, like the creaking of the captain's leather gloves or the ringing of his razor as he drew it across his stubble, went just as far in developing his character as his actions. That said, a scraping razor might not provide the oomph you'd want for a demo. The automatic gunfire of the "bad guys" in Live Free was impressive. I really liked how my sub kicked in to balance a sound that is typically just loud in a lot of movies.

If you are trying to impress him on sound quality and Profile 2.0 then why are you limiting the selection to DTS-HD Master?

while i'm hooking the system up for a friend, i'm selfishly trying to impress myself. I'm waiting for bd50 to enter the dts-ma league. i might have to jump on new receiver as well........cant imagine analog out sounding as good as bitstream anyway...

The audio is all 1s and 0s once it is decoded in the player or in the receiver. The difference is whether or not the receiver adds post processing to the audio when bitstreamed. PCM's volume is generally lower than when the audio is bitsteamed, but once the audio levels are matched I bet most people couldn't tell the difference. I guess some people like that DTS-HD Master Audio light on their receiver though.

Not from a PS3, it doesn't do bitstream and only outputs decoded LPCM.

Is there any possible advantage of having MA bitstreamed to your receiver? Anything at all, im curious.

Got to agree here. To demo, don't read the package, listen to the sound. Just watched Casino Royale on BD for the first time and I have not heard sound better than the Madagascar chase scene - it is in your chest the whole time. It was the match of any HD DVD soundtrack I have heard, Beowulf included.

Yes, DTS HD Master/TrueHD are picketed data when sent in bitstream. LPCM is a stream dependent on clocks. The master output clock is always going to be a small amount different than the slave (receiver) clock so you have clock jitter added to the sound. Now while you can measure it it's not likely that you can hear it but it does degrade the SQ.

I'm not sure why you are limiting yourself to DTS-HD MA only.

A couple of scenes I've used for demo-ing audio:

iRobot - in the tunnel where Smith is chased by hundreds of robots in his Audi.
Ratatuille - the rooftop scene up until Remy gets lost in the sewer. Especially good for bass demonstrations.
Cars - the race right at the start, great surround use, very chaotic when the crashes begin.
3:10 to Yuma - horse and cart chase scene near the beginning, trainyard scene at the end.
Kingdom of Heaven - raid of Jerusalem: this scene is truly epic in scale.
I am Legend - generally the first 15 minutes is an excellent example of subtle surround use and ambient sounds.

actually Pathfinder also have a good surround dts-ma track...I know it's a bad movie but the sound especially when Ghost being trail by the dragon people in the jungle, all creatures sound, flow of water, rain, wind....it's like u sit right in the middle of the jungle...

I was talking about the Panasonic BD-50 which can bitstream and decode DTS-HD Master Audio. Of course the PS3 cannot bitsteam the lossless audio formats, I never said it could.

I will second The Orphanage. Great movie with some really nice use of ambient sound. The creaking and thumping in the house sounded insanely real.

depends upon your recevier and your analog out.

x-meridian with good opamps (OPA627 or something) will blow away bitstream into many receivers. sounds pretty darn fine to me and noticeably better (testing using 2 channel music over SPDIF) into my rather avg to lower end Yamaha.

but a really top line receiver migth be better with digital bitstream into it (not sure if claim is still true, but they used to say you needed to be in more like $3000+ price class AND pick well)

I respect your opinion, but I have to disagree slightly:)

I would put I, Robot above Man on Fire, Pan's, and Mr. Mrs. Smith. The tunnel scene where Will Smith gets attacked by all the robots (I believe the chapter is "you are experiencing a crash") is pure reference HT demo material and I would put it up with the best stuff I have heard. These other movies sound amazing as well, but just a hair short of I, Robot IMO.

I would also put Live Free or Die Hard above Man on Fire, Pan's, Mr. Mrs. Smith, particularily the jet/semi scene which again, IMO, is HT reference demo material.

I'll go with Shoot Em Up for DTS-MA Demo Material. Movie wise some people hate some love it. I personally loved the mindless entertainment. :)

Yup. The movie is utter bobbins, but the audio (especially the bass) is simply incredible. Play that sucker too loud and it'll put a hole in the world.

Getting back to the OP he asked if there were any BD's that showed both DTS MA and Live 2.0, not just DTS MA.

Saw IV does do what you are looking for, but the 2.0 feature isn't that impressive. You can mark a scene with cartoon like bubble comments that you upload to the server so everyone can see your take on a scene or scenes. You can also see what other people think about a scene or scenes and you can read their comments while the scene they chose is playing back. It is kind of lame as least on this disc and IMO overall this seems no different than DVD's with special features that I had no interest in viewing.
