I'm installing a new front projector. Since it will sit much further back in the room than my prior PJ, I decided to move the AC outlet. While I was doing that I decided a in-wall surge protector that mounts in the box would look better than the wall wart type I had been using. The cheapest such device I found in a web search was $100 and required a 2-gang box (I'd just got done installing a single gang box). Over my lunch hour I did some old fashion seaching; i.e. went shopping.
At the local Menards I found a Pass & Seymour 5252-WSPCC6 for $25. It mounts in a single gang box and is rated to disipate 130 Joules. I live in a residential neighborhood where all electrial service is underground (no surges from near or direct lightning strikes) and that's about the rating of surge suppressors I've used for years with no damage to lots of electronic gadgets I have.
Some users may need more sophisticated (and expensive) power protection; this unit should suffice for most people.
I thought I'd pass this information on to anyone else who finds the price of a lot of in-wall surge surge suppressors shocking (OK--sorry about that one).
