View Full Version : 2.30 Firmware PS3 & Onkyo TXSR605
sgentry6 04-24-08, 10:36 PM So I need what I think is some simple help.
Setup:
TXSR605
PS3
Klipsch F2 Fronts
Klipsch Quintet III for center, and rears. (7.1 not currently hooked up).
Klipsch Sub 10
Samsung LNT 4065F
If you can't tell I hit up the Best Buy days before Thanksgiving sale as well as the Black Friday sale. :) All in all it's not a bad setup, but I really feel this package is missing something, especially with Hi-Def content.
I tried both settings (multichannel PCM and Bitstream) tonight after updating my firmware, and it doesn't seem. The PS3 reports the audio playing at anywhere from ~3 to a max of ~6 MBps on PCM. This is what I expect to happen. Yet when I go to play bitstream it seems to downsample down to normal DTS, as it plays at a steady 1.5 MBps.
Overall I never seem to get proper punch without really cranking the volume. As far as cabling goes I'm using 10 gauge speaker wire and banana plugs all around. All from monoprice. I was told that a SPDIF cable would work for a sub cable, and that seems to be working, but at times the sub will stay off when the system is on; unless I turn up the volume 45 seems to be the magic mark.
Any ideas? Especially in regards to hi-def content?
I guess I was just expecting a big jump in quality over DTS and DD. Maybe my expectations were too high?

??? You can't bitstream DTS-MA or TrueHD with the PS3. I didn't know you could bitstream anything over hdmi I guess you can steam standard DD (640) and DTS(1.5) . With the PS3 just set it to PCM over hdmi and leave it there.

Louder does sound better :)
Regradless of the HD bits:
Check that speaker are properly calibrated.
Some folks like there sub up a few db as well. It might give you the "punch" you are looking for.

Good chance of that :)
I don't know your speakers but they could be your weak point. It is hard for small speakers like that to sound "dynamic". My friend has speaker of the same class and his high def is not as "produnced" as it is my system.
Have Fun!

That's quite possible. Legacy DD and DTS run at higher bit rates on Blu-ray than on DVD. They sound quite good. Some argue that it's not possible to distinguish between lossless and well done lossy encodes at Blu-ray bit rates. Regardless, if all of the audio choices are disappointing to you, you may have a problem in your set up somewhere.

When you bitstream a lossless encode, the PS3 will play the DTS core or the companion DD track. The DTS core usually has a 1.5 mbps bit rate. DD will be 640 kbps.
EDIT: I would add that in my limited experience, lossless can sound clearer and more detailed. But, the difference is not substantial and in some cases, they sound pretty much the same.

If I am understanding you correctly, you don't notice much difference between dts-ma and regular dts? That is odd, because I have the 605, ps3 with a 2006 samsung. The only real difference is that I have KEF 2005. I hear a pretty decent punch and difference when I switch between the two formats.
Maybe it's the speakers, but just to be sure....
is everything hdmi? You don't have optical running anywhere mucking things up?
when you press select on your controller is the ps3 saying dts-ma or not? It should NOT say PCM....
are all your levels correct? Have you obssessively tweaked and run audyssey many times before being satisfied with your setup? (at first, I ran audyssey just once and kind of forgot about it.... you really have to obsess over it and tweak it)
Try a normal AV cable to your sub.....
SirDrexl 04-25-08, 08:46 AM If you're using the "coaxial digital" cable from Monoprice, it's fine as a sub cable and it's what I use. If you go back to their website you'll see that they've changed the name of the item to include "subwoofer."
BTW, do you only turn it up to 45, or is that just the point where the sub kicks on? I have to turn mine up to over 60, sometimes 70 if I want it loud, and this is in a small room (15' x 11.5'). I guess the Klipschs are pretty efficient.
michaelsvieira 04-26-08, 12:12 AM I understand completely that if I bitstream from my PS3 I'm getting the core 5.1 as compared to PCM, but no matter what I try my system sounds 5 times better when I Bitstream than PCM. In my PS3 I'll switch back and forth while a movie is giving between bitstream and PCM, and PCM sounds lower while Bitstream is clearer and louder. I've tried movies with the DTS-MA and TrueHD and honestly the quality is better when I'm on Bitstream. I have no problem with the SUB, just that everything is lower.
I have the following:
605
ps3
Bose Accoust 10 ( I know this is not the best, but I have them for a long time)
Bose Center channel
Polk Subwoofer
Does anyone experience this?
Thanks

- Nope. PCM (Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD MA) sounds significantly better than Dolby Digital or DTS. If you level matched the PCM compared to Bitstream, you would have the same results.
CHUCKCHILLOUT 06-24-08, 04:44 PM My Setup:
PS3
ONKYO TX-SR605
KLIPSCH QUINTET III
Paradigm Monitor 7 Ver. 4
VELODYNE VA 1012
Hitachi HD42DT79
I'm throwing this to the experts. When I am watching a dvd on my ps3 I have the option of keeping the settings at 5.1 lpcm, or I can set it to bitstream and use Dolby PLIIx which matrixes to 7.1. It is my understanding that sometimes louder means, more noise; not necessarily better sound. I currently reside in a apartment and when I have PLIIx on I seem to get more pounding on the walls from my neighbors. When I have PLIIx on it seems a lot louder and I can't understand why that is the case when I'm really just incorporating 2 more small satelite speakers. Any Input?
Thanks

Check out my post and take from it what you will. I just had a few questions for you. Did you go through the audyssey setup process with your subwoofer at the half point setting?
