Before I seal up the riser, just wanted to share some images. The wires on the wall will be covered over from the GOM/duct liner wall treatment.
This riser is built on U-Boats. No wood is touching the walls or floor. The riser is built on roofing felt on concrete, not on the carpet pad. Because of the desired height I needed, 2x12s (white wood) are fused on top of 2x4s (treated wood) with Liquid Nails, Lag bolts and Simpson mending braces. This is only done for the perimeter. The overall dimensions of the riser are a bit over 5' x 10'. I have started to fill it with PINK stuff.

Be sure you keep some space between the "Pink Stuff" and the Bass shakers. With that in mind it looks good.

Oh, One other thing, are you leaving an access panel in your riser floor to access those Bass shakers? I did and I am glad I did as we had one fail and a couple of other adjustments to make to them since they went in.

McCall, you are right on the ball with the two things I did not discuss and was contemplating. First, I wanted to know how much space to leave between the riser and the pink stuff...any recommended distance?

Second, I am pulling my hair out on how to make the access panels (i.e should the panels be individually carpeted? would it weaken the top of the riser causing any sink spots, lead to squeaking etc. I want to get access in case I change them out for failure or to BKers

On mine I left a bay about 10" did not put any insulation into that section. I believe, if you look at my thread from signature, and scroll down to my riser construction you will see that the shakers are mounted on a section that in my case is directly under the supports for my Real theater seats, and on the finished riser those seats are all mounted to one board that spans the riser and is the depth of the fastening bases of the seats. so what I did was to carpet up to that board and then behind the seats I did a wood look flooring behind the seats and that part has an access board just behind the seats that also runs the entire way. I have actually found in practice that leaving that board off which in my case is safe to do, made the riser act as a great bass trap.

With recliners of course it is a different story are you doing recliners? I don't remember off hand. I would use the separate access panel and you could fasten carpet to the top of it separate from the rest of the carpeted riser.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. I'll take a look. I am using real theater seats on the riser but I don't have them yet.

Here is one picture though it is dark

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb101/Arwenmark/July07005.jpg

Here you can see the board the seats are mounted too, the Bass shakers are directly under the sections where the seats attach, and right behind that black board you can see a section with a line that is the piece that lifts out.

depending on how quickly you are going to finish, I can try to get some better shots tomorrow when I am down there and post them for you.

Thank you, that would be great, I'll probably only get the pink stuff in this weekend so maybe next week will be time to put on the top.

Due to space limitations, my seats will be only a few inches from the back wall, therefore I am not sure I will be able to get an access panel in the back there. I will have to look at the schematic of the Dolphin Pearl, Star or Moran (these I am considering) to see if I can re-mount the shakers to the other side of where they are now and have space behind there to get some access doors. I tried to place the ties wood pieces where the seat legs will be to maximize the energy to the seats.

Looking at your pictures again I have a question, how much room did you leave between the rows? I will measure mine but I think we left 30 inches from the front of the seat base to the front of the riser. and it is just enough to allow leg room and for someone to get by if necessary.

Also without the room behind the seats are you doing 5.1 then? I ask because 7.1 really seems to need the space behind the seats to be really effective, but then the side speaker placement is different in 5.1 than in 7.1
I have two feet behind my seats and it is just barely enough I wish I had at least a couple more feet to those rears.

Assuming the seat is 31", the riser width is 60", so about 30" for leg room and walk space.

Yes, I am doing 7.1 and I agree from what I have read that it really needs a few feet to be effective (I only have a mere 6" which is the depth of the columns that I can afford and still have the right distance for the front row "prime" seats). I assume it will turn out to be 5.1 with the rear two speakers just there for looks and uniformity, however if it does not interfere with the rear seats and sounds good for the front seats I will keep it as 7.1

Tradewinds,

I hate seeing wires running under the framing. I'm always afraid of the wires fatiguing and breaking after a while from people standing on the riser. I don't know if it's a rational fear, but it's something to think about. I would have drilled holes in the framing for the wires to run through.

Dave, good point. If my riser was not suspended off the ground I would have definitely done that. No part of the riser is touching the ground. The perimeter are on U-Boats (about 1/2" off the ground) and the center joists are a few inches off the ground.

tradewinds,

I couldn't tell the riser was off the ground in the pictures. There shouldn't be a problem then...

I am thinking of moving the Bass Shakers to the other side of the board they are currently mounted on so that they are in the chamber that will not be filled with insulation and then use vent registers over the chamber to gain access. My question is, if I want to make this a bass trap also, would I need to drill some 2" holes from the chamber to the surrounding compartments where the insulation is or is it a waste of time doing so?

OK, I moved the shakers to the other side of the board today and will use HVAC register (vents) in those four "chambers" with just some pink stuff on the bottom of the chamber. I believe the concept is similar to what Dennis' illustration shows below. I don't think I will need those 2" holes since the chambers have openings under them to the other compartments. This should make a good bass trap.

I am still working on the pictures of mine for you will get them this morning. in my case as I said earlier I have the panel off most of the time over the butt kickers and that helps the bass a lot, but my riser design also called for the back corner on one side to be an L shaped cut out and that I also left open, will get covered with fabric when I get to it, anyway those openings make a huge difference in the bass response. This was true before I added my second Sub TO the riser itself I placed it on the seat mounting board on one side of the back row. It is stll true now. So I now have one sub in the Front right corner as you face the screen and one pretty much straigth across from it at the back of the theater facing front. I was lucky this placement worked out well for me AND gives me great additional tactile response on the riser.
Anyway will try to post some more pics today.

My only concern with your registers would be rattle, use unmovable wooden ones that should help, nothing to vibrate.

Thanks. Yes, I will need to find some fixed ones for sure. I had bought some scroll ones for my bbq grill and may look to the same on-line company for something similar if the big box stores don't have them.

Call me stupid but I thought the bass shakers were supposed to be mounted upright. Yours are mounted on their sides.
Am I wrong?

I followed Dennis's riser diagram I posted above to include the cross tie pieces and mount the shakers to them. I hope this is right.

how many shakers do you have and how did you wire them.. (diagram if you have one...)

i thought about putting mine in the riser but think i am going with attaching to the individual seat so that if i need to work on them i can do so without disturbing the riser..once sealed and carpeted..

I have 4-shakers hooked up like the second diagram here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=15463&d=1070324386

Since I have 5 seats, there is really no good way to hook up 5 shakers from what I was told in this thread:

Nice work on the riser.

For the bass trap portion of the riser:

1. Did you add the 4"x6" registers to the top portion? If yes how many and where? Any pictures?

2. I see some holes in the front area of the riser. Are they 2" in diameter? Are those for Broadband bass trapping? If they are 2", is that big enough to avoid inadvertently becoming a specific frequency bass trap? How many did you cut and where?

Do you feel that your work in turning your riser into a broadband bass trap was significant in trapping bass?

Frank, the riser is pretty much at the same point in the photos. I am trying to get some wood registers that will be placed at the back by the wall of each chamber. I believe the hole saw is about 2" (I will have to check). The purpose was to also act as a resonator for better tactile effect. I am not sure how it will perform until I am finish. BTW - I am also thinking about placing two more registers by the adjacent wall.

well, tomorrow will be exactly one year since I last updated this thread. The riser is now complete, and so is the room for the most part. The seating arrived the last two weeks. Will post pics in a week or two.
