Would it ever be an option to get full seasons of standard TV shows on one Blu-ray disc? Has that ever been talked about or rumored?

I have thought about buying the box sets on standard DVD, but it takes up so much space when you have to buy 6-9 boxes with 4 disks in each. If 4 episodes fit on a standard DVD couldn't you fit a full season of 12-15 episodes on one Blu-ray disk? I want to be able to get a full season of Curb your Enthusiasm or MASH or whatever on one disk.

I give you plus 100points for asking for Curb.

I'd rather wait for the full series. It's shot in SD so it will never look better. But fewer discs would be nice.

I think MASH can be mastered in HD. So you would probably still have the same number of discs though.

But short answer to your question. No, not for a couple of years.

Not to be a jerk, but isn't this just something people can do on their own? Either rip your DVD's to a hard drive and stream it through a media center or buy a BD burner and create your own disc from the DVD's?

It really doesn't sound like something to concern the studios with, when production lines are filled up already with discs with actual HD content. Or when time and resources could be spent readying films that could benefit from being on HD.

I disagree that SD TV seasons couldn't look better on BD. Compression artifacts are pretty evident on some of the series I've seen. AVC/VC-1 and maybe also higher bitrates could make them at least look more like the master tapes.

Not sure what you want but most TV series shows (like MASH) are shot on 35mm film and can be mastered in HD (much would depend on the preservation and condition of the prints). To preserve the OAR they would be pillarboxed.

It's not likely that you will ever see entire seasons put on one or a small number of disks. If is about perceived perception of value. People see a single disc as being less desirable and valuable (hence saleable) and a multi disk set as being "more" (super size) even if both contain the same content and are priced the same.

There's no technical reason why the shows can't be put on a BD but there's a financial reason why you probably won't see it happen any time soon. While SD-only players dominate the market there's no reason to put the SD shows on BD. Even though MPEG2 encodings can be used on both media, it's cheaper to press one format instead of two. Paying for 2 different encodings makes it even less attractive.

Blu-ray is marketed as a high-definition format, so putting out a disc with only standard definition content probably won't happen anytime soon, if ever.

If MASH is ever released, it will be in high definition, 99% of the time.

Consumer confusion. Wont happen.

It will happen once Blu-ray becomes a mass market medium. Studios love selling the same content over and over again to consumers.

Id like to see Dexter put on Blu-ray. Sure it looked good in SD on showtime, but theyve brought it to prime time in HD and it looks great. I dont think there will be a market for older shows in HD, unless its a really popular series.

Sure it looked good in SD on showtime, It looked great in HD on Showtime. :) Was that a typo?

I don't see this ever happening, fitting more SD content on BDs. It's about marketing and psychology. Most customers would probably be hesitant to pay that much for just one disc even if it'd contained the whole season (or seasons). A set of several discs is just more perceived value.

I doubt anyone would release just a single season of a show on one Blu-Ray disc, because, as others have said, it would seem (counterintuitively, I know) like less value than several discs. However, I could see it happening in the context of a full-series release... like, say, the entire series of X-Files or Buffy in a single smallish box rather than a 50-pound chest. But in any case, I'm sure it's a long ways off.

LOST has already done this...just Season 3 is on Bluray.

LOST Season 3 is on 6 Blu-Ray discs.

I believe nick_rh was refering to SD content being put on one disk to save space on your shelf. Newer shows, and older shows, shot on film would benifit from an HD multi disk release, like Lost.

I don't see this happening. Right now, the studios are tickled pink that they can charge $50+ for TV seasons. Consumers won't see the value in a one disc set for that much money. Plus, the number of consumers that can actually play such a disc is absurdly small.

I'd like to see SD shot videos put on BD in 480i or whatever they were shot in rather than upscaled to 1080p. I assume this would save a lot of disc space for more episodes per disc and thus less discs per set. If you're not going to get more resolution out of the source, don't waste space on something that's not there. Just make a really good 480i encode.

Wasn't this done for '28 Days Later'? Shot on SD videocam but encoded as 1080p/24...?

Technically the end is 35mm so not the "only standard definition content" that KMR speaks of. :p

Weeds Season 1 was on one BD and Season 2 was on 2. It was all HD though.

season 1 was only 3.5 hours of content, though. With standard 1 hour TV seasons pushing 16+ one disc won't work.
