View Full Version : Contrast Ratios and Gamma?
So from what I learned in Greg's review of the RS2 and VP11S2, is that if you have enough on/off contrast you can move up in gamma without sacrificing image quality that much and gain considerable amounts of 3D effect. Am I correct in my understanding?
But what about the new samsung LED based LCD TV's with there Infinite on/off, would they be able to use a gamma of 2.5 and much higher if it were avail on the unit?
But now another question is when coming out of black from the LED's being off to on, it must go from infinite on/off to 50,000:1 in a split moment. Will this still effect how much gamma can be used?
What negative effects are there to up the gamma besides loss of shadow detail.

mark haflich 04-26-08, 01:13 PM Gamma is a preference, not an absolute. We are talking system gamma which is projector gamma divided by the constant camera gamma of 2.2. Once you go over a system gamma of 1.2, to most the image will get too contrasty. The problem of get toa system gamma od 1.15 to 1.2 is the need for an on/off CR of arounde 60,00 with hout lowering the gamma at low IRE to avoid black crush.
So would you say going to a 1.5 system Gamma would be out of the question even on 500,000:1 machines?
And what about the Infinite:1 TV's like the Samsung can they get up to a system Gamma of 2 or higher?
Or like you said would it be to much contrast at these modes?
Also update, and a question to many: I have been told from Darin that Film is mastered at 2.4-2.5 gamma. Is there any links to this on the Internet so I can read up about it?
I thought Camera gamma was 2.2 when recording the information?

Amen to that!

You are so wise, Yoda:)
Its also becoming flavor of the month, as if its some new magical thing.
Whisky to the natives.:)

This sort of ass kissing is more suited for the ultra-high end forum :). There's nothing new about gamma being a tool to suit personal preference and has been detailed on this site for years. I personally feel this personal preference for gamma is masked somewhat and probably more dictated more by the endless visual surround features of the viewing enviroment but regardless. The first posts I've read on this site regarding gamma being non absolute variable dependent on enviroment was a couple years ago from member Krasmuzik and at first I thought he was full of sh_t, obviously he was a little ahead of the gamma baahh baahh curve.
mark haflich 04-26-08, 04:33 PM Coldmachine, a friend, will never be allowed to kiss my ass.
there is nothing wrong with agreeing with someone.
I think because of certain reviews, one without perhaps sufficient knowledge might conclude the higher the gamma, the better. On/off CR must be high enough to allow a chosen gamma to be used without black crush or the need to customize a curve making it below the chosen gamma a low IREs. Fromt alks with Greg, I know he feels that once a gamma gets to a certain point, say much above a system gamma of 1.2 or so, the image regardless of a super high on/off CR gets too contrasty. Not real. However, existing state of the art on/ff CRs for digital front projectors are not yet high enough to allow his or mine preference for an optimum gamma. We are getting close. Be nice. It would be very bad if a belief occured that some unreal looking gamma was desirable.
it is very hard to know everything or to have read posts discussing these things long ago. topics arise and rediscussion and education are usefful to at least some here, including me.:)

It wasnt ass kissing, its actually a mark of respect between geniuses:) Its "the code".
Im aware of there being nothing new there, my post said as much, perhaps not as clearly as i imagined:)
Its just funny to see people latch onto something as the new panacea and make it a cause célèbre.
mark haflich 04-26-08, 05:09 PM My point exactly. Neither of us are geniuses, just good looking athletic studs knowing when enough to say slam, bang, thank you young lady and not ask here why or how you did that. Ok. We would say "rready?""Again?"

I expect we've laid more pipe than the Trans Siberian Gas Company:D:D
Thats one of my own, but feel free to use it
Hughman 04-26-08, 05:32 PM Ok I get it, gas pipes, between the pipes, just come clean and admit your relationship is based on a mutual fixation with sewar pipes.:D:D:D. Don't mind me, I'm self medicating a possible broken leg.
Hughman 04-26-08, 05:48 PM Damn, how about a hint down the pipe for strike two.
Cameron 04-26-08, 07:03 PM WTF?
This thread is getting kinda weird.
mark haflich 04-26-08, 07:44 PM Getting? :)
