Dont know anything about finishing Basements, I *think* the "finishing" part is halfway done. A little background, I am college student who just graduated and am planning to do this in my parents house for their 25th anniversary. I know how to do wiring and how to take care of the technology part but have no idea about the building part.
So basically I need advice on how to design and then I plan to have someone come in and do the actual work.
Thanks for all the help.
bump. I'm just looking for small details like which wall is "finished" and which one is not.
I would need better pictures...
Are you asking about the currently framed parts?
ALot of it would depend on your goals for the room.
Plus read the first page of a few build threads and you will see a ton of great info and pics that will help you.

Better pictures would help but we need to know what your "plan" is for the room. Dedicated HT with a projector or a "multi purpose" media room with a flat panel or projection TV.
In looking at the floor plan I'm guessing the upper right corner is a doorway? I would definitely put the doors at the rear of the room. the bump out could be a equipment closet or small snack bar and the wall on the left the screen wall.
I second Staffy on the reading of the threads here as well as posting for suggestions. If you are going to have all the work done there are those here that can direct you in the planning and design stages but you will also find those here that can help you should you go DIY.

Well yea I was just trying to understand the construction process, as how "close" or what constitutes as finished right before the dry wall going up. And yea I have been looking at many threads since posting.
I guess the reason I wanted to know how close it is to finishing it... is it to see if I can turn this into a learning process and learn about construction by going DIY. So just based on the wall and the ceiling I was trying to gauge how difficult of a DIY it would be.
Thanks I'll probably be posting questions soon after I myself try to under what my "goals" are.
Funston 04-28-08, 12:17 PM Your right side wall would be ready to hang drywall after you install the necessary electric and complete any sound proofing that you intend to do. The front and left walls are not complete. Those walls are concrete with the insulation blanket hanging on it. You would need to furr out the walls to create an area for wiring and provide a nailing surface for the drywall. The easiest way to furr out the wall is to build a 2x4 wall in front of the insulation blanket.
Before jumping in, make sure you know what exactly you want the room to do and how you want it to perform so you don't have a lot of tearing out and re-work later.

Thanks,
I was thinking of filling the walls and ceiling with mineral wool before putting the dry wall up... any other recommendations?
Now... Im gonna go research stages and risers and come back with questions.
thanks everyone
Use regular r-13 for the walls. Mineral wool is a lot more expensive and the experts say doesn't give any additional sound proofing value.
so use mineral wool for cieling?
also quick side question... I have no A/C Vents in the room from my limited knowledge, I think this is good and I am not going to try to put any.. or am I wrong and I have to have air ducts in the theater room?
Thanks and I plan to have a make a list of questions tonight before I sleep and post it here.
Great help again, Thanks

H,
I would for sure look at having HVAC into the room due to many reasons. The negative with vents is the noise propagation/transmission however there are things you can do to help with that. What would be worse is to be in the theater sweating or freezing your hind end off while trying to enjoy a movie.
I have personal experience with this and while it was just a "proof of concept" moment I learned early on you should consider heating and cooling issues when designing/building an HT
I can't say enough plan, plan, plan, and then plan some more.
BTW you did not let us know what your planning on for the room. Any thoughts on this?

Well Good news is that, my floor plan that we got when we bought our house were wrong and the room is actually 18.75 X 16 and then GREAT news is that my brother gave a idea so actually extend the room to 22x16 :) so that was good today.
1. I am going to go with some Dark Burgundy or Maroon color until the "angeled moldings" and BLACK ceiling and the screen wall painted black as well. anything wrong with this?
2. The "angeled moldings" what should they be filled with and is that good place to put the L/R main speakers?
3. I agree with the point above made about A/C vents so where do you say are the ideal locations to place Vents and should I have more than one?
4. From what I have been some have filled risers and stages with sand and some with insulation, which is better?
5. Is there a correct calculator to see which is the biggest screen size I can go with, I could have sworn I saw it once but can't find it agian :(
6. What brand paint is the best recommend, I saw many that people were using?
7. I am using theater-calc.com riser calculator for the riser heights and hoping thats the best. How far should the first row and riser row(second row) be from the front wall and back wall, couldnt really find any exact calculations for that?
8. I'm going to do a one step stage, maybe I can do a two step one but dont see that much of any advantage?
9. Should I have the speakers behind the screen, not too particular about that right now, but maybe I will later, I dont want to loose space now as I dont think I have the ideal length and from what I have seen the normal space between wall and screen if using SMX screen is 3ft.
10. If I dont go with the SMX screen and have the front speakers in the "angeled moldings" how do I handle the screen being mounted on the wall if I go with a Carada type screen?
11. I plan to have butt-kickers now if budget permits or later ,do I need to have power outlets or other conduits to the seating area?
12. So what should ceilings be filled with same insulation or is that the place for mineral wool?
Alright I'll stop with those questions and I probably will answer some of them tonight with reading and have more questions as a result of the reading.
P.S. Sorry about the crappy drawings but I will have something better later... I'll hopefully have the time to mess around with the 3D software.
Thanks for everyone's help.
Lots of good questions, but they tell me that you aren't ready to start building yet and need to do some more reading.
As for the HVAC issue this needs to be very carefully planned. Projectors, equipment and people crank out a lot of heat. With no HVAC or a poorly planned system you will have a very hot and stuffy room. Read Craig's thread for some interesting insight as to how he planned for his hvac and still need to redo things. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=735097
Heck read all of the big build threads.

Thanks for the advice and thats what I've been doing exactly. Also I had a chance to demo the Rs-1 projector with Monitor Audio Rs-6 speakers and the expirience was just amazing.
Tonight Ill re-evualuate the questions and now ask the remaining and newly added ones that I couldn't really search for.
Thanks
Also keep in mind that for a couple thousand you can have a pro draw up blue prints of the entire process. For a price you will know where every 2x4 and nail needs to go.

What ever you do don't hang the projector and the speakers until the room is done! Because if you do that you WILL be done!:D
I second Cathan, I lurked here for many months before registering and then read for about 6-8 months more before I ever started actually "planning" my theater. There is so much to learn here and absorb you would do well in actually searching someone out to help plan however I did not do this because I'm CHEAP!:p

Well I did have couple of people, from custom installer database and also the CEDIA website and pretty much, I like the ideas they are giving but I also wanted to give input and and learn as well. I havent completely decided what I want to do but, yea I have been reading here on and off for about a year so looking to make a start.
Also I just demo'ed the Plannar DLP and ascend speakers together and they are amazing, so many good products its going to be a hard decesion.
And Now I go read another big build... pretty all I do every night, read a big build thread :)
