Guys,

Eighteen months on this board and I'm ready to start my own build thread.
Here's the skinny. New construction home. Theatre is 22' 6" L x 17' 6" W with 3' behind screen wall making actual room 19' 6" L x 17' 6" W.
Lobby, media storage, equipment closet are all attached. I plan on DD with GG throughout.
Acoustic treatment as needed.

Equipment list:

SMX 120"
Projector?
Denon or Pioneer Elite AVR?
Blu-Ray player?
HTPC
Klipsch THX Ultra 2

After many emails with BPape, these dimensions seem to be ok. Here is my 2D drawing of the plans. Please feel free to comment.

Plans look excellent! Wish I had that much room to play with! :)

Have fun!

I question the wasted space for an aisle between the DVD and CD racks. I would have played around with alternatives including exposed recessed shelves.

I agree it is wasted space. I have some time to change things. Maybe I should look at just one wall of storage and expand either the theater or the lobby? What do the acoustic guys think of the room dimensions? 20 x 15 before screenwall, 17 x 15 after screenwall.

Thanks for all the great ideas. Keep them coming!

It's not ideal having 15 and 20' but it could be worse. What is the height of the room?

Also, since you have dual subs, consider one centered on the front wall and 1 centered on the rear wall.

Bryan,

These are houseplans so I can still change a foot or two in either direction. The room height right now is 10 feet. Is there a more ideal height? Which room dimension would be more appropriate? Would you pm me with cost for acoustic analysis. Looking at breaking ground in the fall.

is it odd that you have 6 chairs in the lobby/bar area + you behind the bar serving, but only 5 chairs in the theater?

Just a rough cut. Think about a popcorn station under the marquee. Modify corner of equipment closet. Equipment door opens out. Think about a small door (24 in). I have an 18 inch door on mine. Also wondering if you actually need the two doors to the lobby or do you need to lock the young ones out of the bar?

Yeah, my wife and I were talking. Eventually we might have 8 Berklines. Probably start with 6 though. Would like to seat as many as possibleith for large parties.

DC,

Thanks so much for the help! The door into the equipment closet is just from behind. There will be a hidden door in the theater to access the rack. I love the way your arrangement gives more space. Where do you find stuff to build a marquee?

If you are talking about the dimensional letters they are metal faced gator foam letters. If you go that route be sure to plan a spot light, track or recessed shining on the spot to make them stand out. Use a dark background for metallic letters or a light background for dark colored letters.

Do a Google on dimensional letters or metal faced gator foam letters for sources.

here is a design doodle for your Marquee Wall with a popcorn station with cabinet.

Very nice Big!

How about using some of the wall depth for the marquee light box?

Good idea, Not sure what he had in mind though, dimensional letters or a back lit transparency

Here is a recent dimensional letters marquee.

a 1" riser huh... well that doesnt sound very practical :)

is the bar just going to face the wall??no area behind it to stand and mix?

If it is a 1 ft riser you should have a step.

Looking good dude, I am going to start my own thread soon with my home theater, in the next few weeks, just trying to get all my ducks in a row. I wish I had this much room to play with too. I have about 670sqft basement, and I am planning two rows of 4 as well, more than likely berkline 090's. Keep posting your plans and photos here. Your project is going to be the first one I will get to see from scratch! i have been a lurker here for a few months and this forum is the most helpful FREE resource out there!

As far as AV equipment, may I recommend and Denon AVR3808CI and the new Epson HomeLite Cinema 1080UB, these two components are the most your're gonna get for the buck in the $4500-$5000 range (combined). I am also upgrading my speakers to Eclipse RF63 series from my 9 year old Polk RT series which I currently use in the living room.

SoonerFann:

Take this one to the bank. Biggy's drawings are gold! Ask him to audograph it and send it to you.

Good luck on your build.

Ok,

Fixed the riser and bar issues. 4' clearance for the bar enough? How much depth for cabinets/fridge is needed on the back wall of the bar area?

CJ, nice to see some okies in here. I'll have to check out your theater.

I'm originally from OK, but I'm living in VA right now. Will most likely stay here for a while.

Where is your space? Is it on the ground floor or will you have a basement?

Space is on ground floor in new construction house. I wanted it to be on ground in case our parents were unable to make it up and down stairs, they could still watch movies with us and the kids.

Latest revision details and pic is on first post now.

Great space and I really like the plan.

Your space certaintly is wide enough! I'm looking forward to watching the build.

Soonerfann,

One suggestion I would make would be to angle at least the chairs on the far right and left toward the screen (see revised plan). With a screen that big, your guests will either be staring at the side of the screen or sitting at an angle in their chair in order to aim towards the center.

Just a thought.

Equipment closet door needs to open out otherwise you are limiting your equipment rack options.

Ok like everyone else on here I'm about 18 months late. Need some feedback though. 12' W by 8'0 H are my screen wall dimensions. How big of a SMX can I place here? Looks ideal for 150 inch screen. Is this too big for this room. I could go up to a 180". Also, for speaker locations, I'm planning on two rows of seats. One at 12' from screen and then on a 12" riser just behind that. Should I place speakers in between these two rows and at what height? Also, where to place the back surrounds and at what height? I'm planning on a THX Ultra 7.1 with SMX screen, so LCR will be behind screen.
