View Full Version : I went back to 7.10 after using 8.04
pcdoctor 04-28-08, 04:15 PM I ended up going back to 7.10 after trying 8.04.
On my desktop and laptop I experienced lockups.
Moodin screens are not displayed properly.
My Nvidia card was verrry hard to configure properly.
For now, I'm going back to 7.10.
Maybe I'll be back to 8.xx when 8.10 arrives.
pgwalsh 04-28-08, 07:04 PM Thanks for posting your feedback. I just put up a mythbuntu 7.10 box and contemplated running 8.04, but opted for stability.
Mac The Knife 04-29-08, 02:54 PM I just installed Hardy night and so far (knock on wood) my experience is just the opposite.
My ATI 9800 pro and my old monitor that always gives windows fits and was a major hassled to get working in Fiesty installed perfectly. I didn't have to touch a thing.
My Seagate Freeagent USB drive who's power down feature gave Fiesty fits now works perfectly. It also refused to mount in Kubuntu (fiesty) but it mounted perfectly in the KDE4 version of hardy.
And my UDF only DVD-DL's that never would mount in fiesty are now mounting perfectly.
I still have a lot of stuff to install and test but so far so good.
Mac The Knife 04-30-08, 03:53 PM Looks like I spoke too soon. I seem to be having problems with openGL. I guess I'm going to have to poke around inside xorg.conf after all.
Mac The Knife 05-01-08, 03:56 PM OK. Turning off all the desktop effects got the GL screensavers working again for me. I only do video so none of that 3D nonsense interests me anyway. Although I can see how this would be a serious PITA to most users.
CT_Wiebe 05-02-08, 03:25 AM I just got through doing the "upgrade" (via the package manager) from 7.10 to 8.04 on my HP Laptop. I had no problems, except for one (so far). I had done a cold boot after the upgrade procedure. I couldn't get my keypad to work. I played around with different keyboard settings, and finally went back to my the set-up that I had used with 7.10. After a complete power down, followed by a restart, it now works perfectly. Apparently, changing settings, and then going back, followed by a cold boot, gets every thing working.
In playing around in the keyboard settings (System ==> Preferences ==> Keyboard), I noticed that 8.04 has added a bunch of options for Logitech cordless keyboards (which weren't supported in 7.10). I'm going to have to try them with mine.
The newest (beta) version of the Linux version of FireFox is also quite different. At first, it confused me, After I played with it a little, I like it better (does some things with fewer mouse clicks).
pcdoctor -- The instructions said that you should first update 7.10, to all the latest "updates", before you use the update manager to upgrade to 8.04. Secondly, the upgrade did warn you that some specialty items (it does clean out what it thinks is unused components) may have to be re-installed after the upgrade to 8.04 has completed. I'm glad it did, because my laptop now boots faster than 7.10 did (which was a lot slower than 7.04, BTW).

I did update to all the latest updates before using the update manager. I still have a few quirks. I also did a clean install on a laptop and a desktop. I did an update on another desktop. So in all, I installed 8.04 on three pcs. Two using a clean install and one using an update.
Tell me if this happens to you.
The kplash program isn't installed in kubuntu 8.04. I think this is a mistake that the programmers left off because it's in 7.10.
Install moodin and tell me if the following moodin screens are off center. You are probably using gnome/ubuntu instead of kubuntu though.
The fingerprint and moodinkde moodin splash screens are not displayed properly. The kubuntu moodin splash screen is fine though. I also installed a Linux Mint moodin screen on my kubuntu 8.04 system and it works fine too.
I've seen this problem occur on a standard and widescreen monitor.
Look at my printscreens from this bug I have reported. By the way, this does not occur with kubuntu 7.10. I also had a Dell laptop lockup. I did a clean install on this laptop. I also had my desktop lockup. I did an update on my desktop. I almost forgot, my sound doesn't work on all three pcs when the sound was working with 7.10.
I reported this bug to the programmers:

Mac The Knife 05-03-08, 04:01 PM I somehow managed to corrupt my 8.04 install.
I was installing a couple of apps last night and suddenly the trash can icon disappeared from the bottom panel. Then all the open windows disappeared off the bottom panel. Actually I think they are still there, but the icons are so skinny that nothing displays on the screen (I was able to blindly right-click around on the panel and find a spot where the icon context menu came up instead of the panel context menu. Also later I noticed that the "network" icon would only display in a really-really big size.
Looks like I'll be reinstalling tonight since even if I fixed the icons, I wouldn't trust that nothing else got corrupted.
mythmaster 05-03-08, 08:52 PM I just wish they hadn't forced Firefox 3 beta on us. Don't call it a stable release if it includes beta software, especially if it's the freakin' primary web browser everyone uses. 3 beta does some random resource-hogging that pauses myth playback on my system, but I'm not gonna file a bug report -- screw them for pulling a "microsoft" on me.
I'll just uninstall and get the latest stable version (of firefox). Everything else is fine, so far, but I haven't loaded a desktop (kde4) yet. What apps were you installing, Mac?
Mac The Knife 05-04-08, 04:41 PM ^^^ Actually, the more I think about it the more I think it got corrupted when I switched from the "ati" driver to the "radeon" driver. During that change, it forced a big reduction of resolution and I suspect that is when the icons got corrupted.
CT_Wiebe 05-06-08, 03:10 AM pcdoctor -- I'm not using the KDE desktop, or kUbuntu. My Gnome desktop works just fine.
Mac The Knife -- Did you check the hashes on your 8.04 download? Or did you just use the Update Manager button. The instructions said to make sure you installed all of the latest 7.10 updates before upgrading to 8.04 via the Update Manager approach. Under 7.10, I had accidentally deleted the "Trash Can". I was able to get it back though, By right clicking in the spot it should have been, and did an "add to panel".
mythmaster -- That's interesting. I haven't had any problems with the Beta 3 Firefox. But, as I said, I'm not using KDE either. It works a little differently than the version used in 7.10, but I was able to adapt very quickly. Since I'm not running MythTV, I don't know about the "resource hogging", but that is always a possibility with Beta software.
Mac The Knife, Post #10 -- That could well be. My laptop uses ATI Radeon Express 200M Graphics, but I haven't done any driver installs. I use the default, and, so far, it's working fine and my display is running at it's native 1400 x 900 resolution.
pcdoctor 05-06-08, 06:49 AM I assume most of you guys are using xfce or gnome and not kde. If I had a HTPC, I'd probably use xfce or gnome. Just a heads up to anyone who is using kde and 8.04.
mythmaster 05-06-08, 07:17 PM @CT_Wiebe: It was hard drive usage. When I had ff3b open in the background (just on the google page, even) and I was watching TV, all of a sudden my drive light would go solid and playback would pause and flicker until I closed ff3b. So, naturally, I blamed ff3b; but, to be fair, though, occasionally the same thing will happen to a lesser degree without anything else running (including mythfilldatabase -- I checked top plus I have slow-delete turned on). It's funny because the 8.04 beta version of Mythbuntu I was using didn't do this at all.
@pcdoctor: Thanks for the heads up -- still in xfce.
Mac The Knife 05-07-08, 03:56 PM pcdoctor .....
Mac The Knife -- Did you check the hashes on your 8.04 download? ...
....
I didn't upgrade. I did a clean install from a live CD on a brand-new hard drive ( and I really mean brand new just bought it and installed it).
I have too many things already up and running in Fiesty to just "update" it. So I'm triple booting (Hardy, Fiesty and XP all installed on different drives) until I get everything up and running in Hardy. Then I'll reformat the drive that Fiesty is on and just us it for backups.
