View Full Version : How to select a HT friendly spouse
JohnG316 04-28-08, 10:41 PM Here it is, guys. I have married a wonderful woman who is also a bass head. She has let me (actually encouraged me to) order 4 shiny new MFW-15's. Her favorite finish was MOJO...
I hear all the complaints around here about WAF this and WAF that.
I thought it would be fun to start a thread on how to select the HT friendly spouse. This is preventive medicine, single guys.
I have noticed that most of you are apparently selecting spouses based on size of fun-bags and not based on... well, important things like flexibility, desire for size of speakers or power of subs. The whining around here about WAF testifies to the power of boobage and the lesser priority of wattage.
So... here are a few ideas. I am certainly open to more!
1. Take your pre-wife to the movies (at your place) and see how she reacts. Does she flee the room in terror or ask you to turn it up?
2. Does she have a sub in her car or anywhere in her house? Would she want one?
3. Does she fondle your speakers?
4. Is she remotely interested in MAR vs. OAR? If she doesn't seem to care *at all*, big red flag.
5. Does she like motorcycles and/or fast cars (yes, I believe there is a correlation). It seems like those obsessed with the practical in life are also those wanting tiny speakers and complaining about excessive wall rattles.
6. Is she willing to help you decide what to buy in your next upgrade? If so, pay attention to her inputs to see where they lead....
7. Does she brag about your setup to her friends or family?
8. When discussing your next upgrade purchase, do you detect resentment or excitement about where the money is going?
Yeah, some of this is tongue in cheek, and some is serious. But don't sell yourself out for a pretty face, boys. Be picky, and find someone who will support your terrible HT habit.
Gotta go now, so I can properly appreciate my amazing bass-head wife. :D
Any other selection ideas?
John
pameredith 04-29-08, 08:14 AM Find a wife of one of the bass heads and get some polonium 210.
I owned my HT setup while we were dating so she was familar with it before she became my wife. I found out that as long as I keep the HT components nice looking and keep the wires organized I will never hear a complaint from her.
Besides it's nice to visit friends homes that don't have decent HT systems and then to hear her say after we leave. "Boy their sound system sounds like crap".
I guess I have it good, since I am beyond satisfied with my wife's 'fun bags', and she lets me do pretty much whatever I want in the HT room. What a wonderful woman :)
penngray 04-29-08, 03:51 PM I tend to want something different then me...hence I married someone who likes to travel the world, eat anything from 50 different countries, believes in being properly dressed. Has real taste and style and she is freaking too damn smart (She has a PhD). She still doesnt make more then me and she doesnt cook but those things may happen someday ;) 13 years later Im an optimist :D
13 years TODAY!!! been with her for 19 years. How? I just say "Yes, honey" then I do what I want :D Of course she has taught me a 1000 things and Im succesful because Im not the same person I was 20 years ago.
I would say dont get someone just like you, it will get boring after awhile and you will never grow or change for the better. :D I do get to have two MAN rooms though !!

+1
Married 13 years been together for 16.
She sees stuff going down into the basement all the time and never questions. :)
swgiust 04-29-08, 04:19 PM My wife loves to cozy up on the couch and watch movies.
She even loves to put in a demo dvd when we have guest
over.
She was a little freaked out by my latest purchase, some
difusers. But I painted them and they look ok now.
The dual SVS subs just look like end tables!
Sharp1080 04-29-08, 09:41 PM My ex wife hated every purchase and everything related to HT. We were married for 9 years. When we got divorced 8 years ago she even mentioned that I could now fix up "my room the way I wanted". ( As soon as she left I did a complete remodel of the house) ;) Fast forward to my present girlfriend of the last 5 years who loves movies, and watching it in the Home theater.:D
OhioMike 04-30-08, 05:08 AM I got pretty lucky in selecting my wife I guess. She has conformed to me and taken to many of my interests while still being her own person. When we met, she listened to Justin Timberlake, Chingy and Avril. Now she gets jacked up listening to Rammstein, Korn and Sixx AM. She liked movies, but only owned maybe 25 dvd's, compared to my 400. Now she works for Wal-Mart and comes home excitedly telling me about the new Blu-ray releases that came out. :)
She still gets a few flames in her eyes about my upgrades, but only in the fact that she would like to see the money used towards something else. But the flames usually die down when I get the new stuff set-up and she can hear and see the difference it has made. Sometimes, unfortunately, I do have to pull out the "And who pays the bills around here" line (guys, I wouldn't suggest this approach for everyone).
But hey, some guys golf, some build custom cars, some drink, some spend their life at the gym, at least our hobby keeps us at home and affords us a median for spending time with our wives and children. So it is at the least a relationship friendly hobby, outside of the financial implications at least. ;)

Do you have pics? Im thinking about placing them on the back wall in my HT room.
longfellowfan 04-30-08, 09:16 AM I am very lucky to have my wife. She enjoys every upgrade I get including the ugly room treatments in my room and is open for more. She can't live without our HDTV with our HR20. Loves 5.1 movie soundtracks and two channel music. Her upgrade path is a PS3 , new receiver and a budget projector and finally a 2.0 dedicated room just for me to get away from her and my 3 daughters. But a little at a time since I have kids tuition to pay.
I bought fun-bags for my wife ;)

I didn't see them in your photo album! :p
4. Is she remotely interested in MAR vs. OAR? If she doesn't seem to care *at all*, big red flag.
Great list, but someone care to explain this one?
My wife just bought me a couple of JL F113, a pair of 802D and a HTM1D.
And yes she likes to listen to them too...
I'm a happy man :-)
The point of this thread was to instruct unmarried bass heads. But all the selection criteria means nothing. As soon as you say 'I do' she becomes a different person and will demand, for the rest of your marriage, that you become a different person. How she reacts to your HT set up is just the luck of the draw. When I married my wife of 28 years, I had no interest in HT. Now, she sees this as a more acceptable hobby compared to some of the other things I could do.

Yep. Somewhere on the internets right now, there's a handbag and shoe forum with a thread titled: "How to select a Bag and Shoe friendly husband."

LOL!!
Well, I found your forum...

Not sure if they have a thread with that title yet. I'm tempted to join and create one, though :D
bondizi 04-30-08, 10:59 PM FWIW ... my wife didnt enjoy watching sub-heavy soundtracks till I got a SVS sub :P Now she'll want the HT sound on even during something soundtrack-ignorant like Law & Order...hahaha
What do i make of this? Size does matter AND its in the way that you use it ;)
hometheaterguy 05-01-08, 01:20 AM Get one of those love sofas and place it asymmetrically between your two subs, then invite her in there for a romantic afternoon delight, lol. No, for real educate her on the technical elements of sights and sounds. She will soon bring home demo material quality stuff.
My wife and I exchanged movie quotes via email before our first date (how cute, huh?), so I knew she was a movie buff. Next step...loud volume. For our first real date, she got us tickets to see Ratt, Dokken and Warrant. Check.
She loves showing off our 70" HD set up currently, and she's as excited as I am to start framing for the HT.
Oh, and she has fantastic fun-bags!:D
klemsaba 05-01-08, 08:20 PM When your girlfriend complains about how you spend your money it is time to move on. That's the first clue.
It amazes me when guys say "my girlfriend wasn't happy when I bought _____" or worse yet "my girlfriend won't let me buy ______". After you are married she can complain, but not before.
I'm lucky, my wife of 20 years loves our HT room. I don't buy stuff without running it by her and sometimes if I want something big I get her something big to distract from my purchase!
My wife is a movie addict so anything i do to improve this after the bills are paid
is ok.
aww the advantages of doing all this when single...now when i have a woman come over she will know ahead of time what i do....lol...
Ohh well..I love the story about the guy whose ex hated his stuff but the new girl loves it ... thats the classic tale of love :)

Me too! She likes them, I REALLY like them:D She never complains when I buy new HT gear.

These are very wise words.
