I am in the process of purchasing a sub and by limitation of space I will have to place the sub in the corner.... inches from the side wall and probably 1.5 feet from the back wall.
My question is, do I need to confine myself to a front firing front ported (or sealed) design?
How much space do you need to keep a port away from a wall? I have 18" would that be adequate to allow a rear ported sub design? What about down firing... Any issues with nearby walls?
I have been lookiing at a down firing rear ported sub (ED A5-350) and i'm concerned, given the corner loaded position, that it would be a poor choice??? Should I stick with front port/firing options???
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

A 4" port at least 4-5" clearance should be fine...An 18" driver also.

18" is plenty of room for a port. Something to note, is even if you give a 4" port 4" of clearence, the gap can still introduce a bit of loading and act like an extension to the port, droping the tuning freq. a tad. Will that matter? Not usually.

So is a front firing/ported sub any better/worse than a down firing/ported when in a corner like I described?
I.E. Given the corner I need to place the sub in.... Which design would be preferred?

I dont think sceintifically they will be different, there will be lots of subjectivity in the responses.

So long as you have ample room for the port and driver, there usually wont be a difference. Sometimes there will be a measurable difference and you might even be able to tell a difference if you A/B them, but otherwise, you wont be able to tell. You're better off picking the better performer of the two subs as opposed to picking by their port/driver arrangment.
