View Full Version : Name some rare SACD releases!

Could you please name some releases on SACD that are hard to find in the USA?

I am living in South Korea, and have found some releases are readily available here for much cheaper than I'm finding in the USA.

For example, Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits goes for $22 new. Peter Gabriel's "UP" is only a few dollars more than that, and lists for over $73 new on E-bay in the USA.

I'd like to know what else I might look that's rare?

Thanks.

Patricia Barber SACDs are becoming rare (I've seen some listed between 250-370$ US).

I recentlt lost ebay auctions on both Talk Talk SACD's:

Spirit of Eden - went for over $130
Colour of Spring - went for over $120

I was able to find Spirit of Eden from Amazon UK used for $35 with no case, no luck with Colour of Spring.

All of the Alison Krauss SACDs are rare to some extent. The Alison Krauss and Union Station Live! is the rarest one I think. It took 3 months and a healthy amount of money to get it.

I really want to get my hands on a Cardigans - Long Gone Before Daylight SACD, but haven't been able to find one yet.

There are countless others that are getting difficult to get. It's quite sad really.

There can be a great difference in the Amazon seller prices and the eBay average selling prices. I have been able to get many SACD and DVD-Audio releases much cheaper from Amazon or other vendor for some titles and can find them much cheaper on eBay for others.

Never released in the US due to producers asking for 3X the royalties as the disc has 3 versions of the recording (stereo CD, stereo SACD, multi-channel SACD).

Ah, I guess I'll stop looking for it when I go to the used record store then.

Edit: I wonder how many of them may reconsider 2x or 1.5x now looking at the condition of the music industry.
I can see the MCH being one version, but would consider the CD stereo/SACD stereo as not different.

I found like half of the discs you guys had put up there, and then my wife tells me, "Oh, that Korean word means, "Sold Out."

Guess I learned some more Korean today. :(

I'd like to find this one as well. There are a small handful of titles that were only released in Europe or Asia markets that are almost impossible to find. Sita: Happy is another one that sounds like it could be a fun listen. To bad there isn't a 'netflix' for rare titles. I'm more curious just to give some titles a listen and not really to own.

I found Cardigans SACD in Amazon.de three months ago, of course, not cheap, the price around 45 dollars with shipping included. And Sita "Happy" SACD is really hard to find, I found this in ebay last year, I paid 25 dollars with shipping to a UK ebay seller.

Sita SACD in my opinion sounds good, not is the best example of the quality of SACD format but the Sita music is very refreshing, in special the song I surrender.

I saw that one but didn't buy because the condition was good if I recall. I saw one on the German eBay site too, but the guy wanted 18 euros! for shipping. It was relisted 3x and then it ended stating it was broken or lost.

Bjork's "Medulla" and "Vespertine" since both are now available on DVD-A.

Impressive digging around, ematcion! I didn't know I could get the Human League on SACD. "Dare!" is not exactly "made for the format", but it would an interesting title to add to the collection.

I believe Bjork's Medulla and Vespertine are still available on SACD if ordered from her website (shipped from the UK). They are not problem free titles, however. My copy of Vespertine has considerable grunge and distortion on the CD layer throughout the disc. I would consider it unplayable. The stereo and MC SACD tracks are fine, though.
Another member was complaining about Medulla on this thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1026308

Now I'd like to add my two cents on what is not easy to find, AND tell you where I purchased it, if I acquired it recently. Hopefully this will help people track down something they're looking for.

1. Gotan Project: La Revancha del Tango (still available at amazon.fr)

2. David Bowie: Heathen
3. David Bowie: Reality
Damn near impossible to find. I had to resort to eBay.

Many Epic Records titles are tough to locate:
4. Joe Satriani: Engines of Creation (in collection for a while)
5. Keb Mo: The Door (still available at amazon.de)
6. Keb Mo: Just Like You (Best Buy Dallas)
7. Deep Forest: Comparsa (in collection- spotted on eBay recently)
8. Indigo Girls: All That We Let In (bestbuy.com)
9. Indigo Girls: Become You (ebay- reasonably priced)
10. Carole King: Tapestry (amazon.com)
11. Stevie Ray Vaughan: Couldn't Stand The Weather (in collection- I have spotted it at a few Japanese sites. hmv.co.jp comes to mind)
12. Luther Vandross: Never Too Much (Best Buy Dallas)
13. Boston: Boston (amazon.com)
14. The O'Jays: Ship Ahoy (as mentioned before. I am getting pretty good at this game, but I've no idea where to find this title)

Other non-Epic titles:
15. Pater Gabriel 3, a.k.a. Melt
You can't even find this one from the German retailers, where most of his collection is still available.
I lucked out and found it in an old Best Buy in the Dallas-Fort Worth area that had not yet been remodeled.

16. Goldfrapp: Supernature (amazon.de)

Maybe off topic, but I follow DVD-A more closely. certain rarer pop titles go for $30 to $75 on ebay.

and even some DTS surround CDs! Wings 'Band on the Run' DTS CD is a hot one, went for $250 on ebay this weekend, but I think it will be a no-pay, who knows. another one went for $72.

Carly Simon - No Secrets DVDA $75
America - Homecoming DVDA - $30-$50
Yes - Fragile DVDA - $50, one went for $128.
prices can be even higher at Amazon or half.com.

DVD-A prices seem to escalate as people realize that many stores don't have them anymore.

The US version of that SRV SACD is even harder to find. I believe the Japanese version is the current version readily available....

I follow DVD-A collectibles as well. I received the "No Secrets" DVD-A about a month ago from hmv.co.jp. "Homecoming" can still be ordered from hmv Japan, but I'm not sure if they can deliver. "Fragile" I believe is truly OOP.

Some other pricey DVD-As (and where I got them):
1. Eagles: Hotel California (ebay)
2. Fleetwood Mac: Rumours (Fry's- also available from hmv.co.jp)
3. Metallica: Black Album (don't have it- they are frequently on ebay. Scouring Best Buys seems to be another way to find this one).
4. Dire Straits: Brothers In Arms (eBay)
5. Eric Johnson: Ah Via Musicom (don't have it. I heard the MC mix is bad).
6. ELP: Brain Salad Surgery (don't have it. ebay prices have climbed to nearly $300 for it though).

I think some of the high eBay prices for DVD-A titles come from a shortage of available titles combined with an increasing number of car models with stereo systems that can play them. It takes years for automotive manufacturers to qualify their electronics. In this case, Acura, Lexus, Cadillac, etc. needed six to eight years to adopt DVD-A, but in eight short years DVD-A has already come and gone.

Nice find! Did you get it new or used?

The older Epic titles are hard to spot in the used section because the slip case is usually gone, and the SACDs shipped in a standard jewel case. So they look exactly like the standard CD release except for the SACD logo on the back.

I bought it brand new. The CD jewel case come inside the original box. One of the thing I like about Amoeba music is that the got such a huge inventory, new and used, so sometimes you get lucky and find some rare (or hard to find) CDs (SACDs) like this. In this case it was hard to spot since it was in a box under the shelves, I guess nobody noticed.

Today I stopped by a little shop near LAX, which sells pretty much used music (LP, CD,SACD, you name it) and came across a couple of SACD, Najee's My Point of View (USD 8.99) and Marion Meadows's Players Club (USD 5.99), both are in mint condition. I'm planning to go back there again to browse some more.

If you guys want to shop most of what's around in Korea, you can do so at Naver Shopping: http://shopping.naver.com

Just type "SACD" followed by the artist name (drop the quotes) in the search box in the middle of the screen.

If this works, here is the entire list of over 2700 titles:

http://shopping.naver.com/search/all_search.nhn?where=all&query=sacd&adchk=&aquery=&uieq=0&theme_query=1&cat_id=12

You can refine your search within that page by typing something in that 2nd box and hitting the green enter button next to it. Try entering an artist's name. Prices are in Korean won, which can be roughly figured 1000 won to the US dollar.
