I have been helping out a fellow AV enthusiast in Mexico via email get his Philips 30PW8420 30" CRT TV tweaked a bit. While he was in the service menu adjusting the geometry, the following happened to him:

"I began adjusting the East-West Width option, since that one either enlarges or shrinks the image horizontally. After I finished that one, I put down the remote and began looking through the pages of the service manual that you sent me. What I didn't notice was that I was accidentally sitting on the remote, and I pressed the right arrow key. The screen began to stretch and stretch, but when I finally realized what was happening, the TV suddenly turned itself off.

Now, if I try to turn on the tv, it only stays on for less than half a second, then it turns itself of again. The only way to turn it on is to unplug it for a few seconds, plug it back, and then press the power button. After you turn it on, the TV is always on SDM mode, and the "ERROR" field reads 1 0 0 0 0. This way, the TV doesn't turn itself off, but needless to say the image is horrybly stretched. I checked the manual for the error code and it says its an "X-Ray / Over-Voltage protection" error. I tried switching into SAM mode both by entering the code on the remote or by pressing the menu and channel keys on the set, but less than half a second after it enters SAM mode, the TV turns itself off, and I need to unplug it and plug it again to turn it on, or again it will only stay on for less than half a second. Needless to say, I can't acces the geometry menu. I tried clearing the error memory on the small time-frame that the SAM mode is active, and although I can quickly read the word "cleared" on the screen, and turn it off with the controller to save the changes on SAM mode, the problem isn't solved."

Does anybody have any suggestions on what he can do to resolve this? Is there a way to do a reset on this TV to restore the factory default settings?

I've been doing some searching, but I haven't found anything definite yet.

Thanks in advance,

-Carl

I'm having the exact same issue here. Stretched the image a little too far and ended up with an x-ray protection error 3. Has anyone found a way to clear the protection status and/or factory reset this model? I've already tried the 4 hour or 24 hour unplugs to no avail, so any help would be much appreciated.

The guy i was helping in Mexico ended up taking his TV to a service shop. Here is what he told me about it:

...the service shop charged me around $130, their explanation was: "The memory was broken, we had to get a new one". How on earth can a memory break? I'm pretty sure he meant it was damaged, but I still can't see how I damaged it. Since I know nothing about TV's, I didn't argue and the TV was finished in about 5 days. Since all of the settings were erased, I had to calibrate it again with Avia. This time however, I didn't touch the geometry, since the guys at the shop had to calibrate it back. I checked with a display pattern on the screen and there is just a minimum amount of overscan, to compensate for the poor power supply, like you said.
