A quick introduction on where I'm coming from. I speak English and that's it. A lot of friends who visit my house speak Chinese and that's it. So when it comes to watching movies, one of us ends up reading while we watch. :-)

So here's an issue of mine I wouldn't mind trying to fix. As you know, with Blu-ray we're getting more subtitle options than we had before. The problem is, the subtitles included on the disc aren't documented well at all.

For example, I was going see if Mr. and Mrs. Smith had Chinese subtitles on Buy.com:

http://www.buy.com/prod/mr-and-mrs-smith-blu-ray/q/loc/322/203922146.html

The only problem is not all of the subtitles are listed. Heck, Fox's own Blu-ray page offers no info whatsoever on the tech specs of the disc. So you're left trying to find an image of the back cover or trying other sites like Amazon wondering if the listings are accurate. For crying out loud, Kung Fu Hustle has NO Chinese subtitles so I can't leave anything for granted until I have the disc playing and cycle through to see what's actually there. I know a lot of people dog Fox releases, but they consistently have the most subtitle options and for that I'm grateful.

So I would like to try maintaining a list of Blu-rays that contain Chinese subtitles. I think it would be helpful to have threads for the lesser languages to be highlighted and since Chinese is in my household, I would be happy to maintain a list for the discs with Chinese subs if people would post.

Naturally a thread for French or Spanish subtitles would be nearly meaningless since basically all discs have them, but for languages like Portuguese or Thai, this would be helpful for people looking for lesser publicized features if someone would want to start threads for those as well.

So here's my lame first attempt at a list, others are encouraged to join in (and point out any mistakes, there's got to be a lot) :

All that I require is that you have or have viewed the subtitles in yours or someone else's system. Specifically I find most online sources inaccurate in this regard.

Also, it's worth pointing out that this thread is for REGION 1 / North American released discs.

Discs where it is not established whether the characters are traditional or simplified will be left unmarked. A mostly accurate assumption is to expect traditional characters.

Blu-ray Films with Chinese Subtitles

(T) - Traditional Chinese Characters
(S) - Simplified Chinese Characters
(M) - Mandarin (Technically there isn't a written language just for Mandarin, this is most likely Traditional Chinese Characters)
(C) - CANTONESE (NOTE: This tends to be for FOX titles only. Cantonese would indicate certain slang would be included but most have indicated that this is not the case.)

Warning titles:

Kung Fu Hustle, Chungking Express - Only has a Cantonese and English track with no Chinese subtitles so the majority of the Chinese population can't view this disc. (Since most don't speak Cantonese)

House of Flying Daggers, Warriors of Heaven and Earth, Curse of the Golden Flower, and Kung Fu Hustle contain no Chinese subtitles of any kind.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: Ultimate Edition and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Ultimate Edition do NOT contain Chinese subtitles despite the inclusion of them on many other Potter titles.

Incorrectly labeled titles:
Happening, The - Says it has Mandarin subs on the case, but it actually DOES NOT.

There's different Chinese options on blu-ray also. Cantonese and Mandarin. Sometimes it's not clear which one is included. Also, a rare example like Resident Evil 3 has simplified Chinese (which is more like a mistake I think, as most other discs released are traditional Chinese and warning cards are still in traditional Chinese). Info like these also helps. Just my suggestion.

KU Hustle, HoFD, Warriors of Heaven and Earth and Curse of the Golden Flowers, all from Sony do not have any Chinese subtitles.

I already wrote to Paidgeek twice at Blu-ray Forum about the unsatisfactory situation of Chinese films on Blu-ray not having any Chinese subtitles and when they are present, sometimes mislabelled as Cantonese and Mandarin subtitles.

I was thinking of an idea of adding a key. S=Simplified, T=Traditional

Maybe to start, I'll only add it to titles we're sure of what the characters are.

I've noticed Fox always labels their subs as Cantonese where as best as I can tell, there's no Cantonese slang present and it should probably be labeled as either traditional or simplified.

Thanks for the help!

This is definitely interesting stuff. I've been tagging all subtitles on my website as straight "Chinese" since, in my cultural ignorance I did not realize that there was more than one written system (although I am aware of the Mandarin / Cantonese spoken split). If I understand the situation correctly, Traditional Chinese will be the most common character set for U.S. releases?

Part of the problem may be that the three letter language code used to identify the subtitle language on disc is defined by the ISO 639-2 spec, which as far as I know only has a single three-character code "zho" for "Chinese" : Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-2_codes), Library of Congress (http://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/php/code_list.php) (but, hey, at least they have Klingon listed). This is problematic, since it seems the only way to determine the actual script used is to rely on the studios to correctly label their product (ha!) or to actually put eyeballs to the screen.

At the moment, I have 115 titles tagged with "Chinese" subtitles (http://www.cinemasquid.com/MovieList.aspx?SubtitleLanguageId=31), 6 titles with Cantonese audio (http://www.cinemasquid.com/MovieList.aspx?AudioLanguageId=26) and 9 titles with Mandarin audio (http://www.cinemasquid.com/MovieList.aspx?AudioLanguageId=65), if you would like to add these titles to your list to investigate.

Finally, I would like to say that dvdempire.com is probably your best source for "back covers" for whatever that is worth. Anyway, great idea for a thread and it would be interesting to see treatment for other neglected or misunderstood languages that have nuances that we (and the studios!) might not all be aware of.

Blu-ray.com allows you to search for movies by Chinese subtitles. :D

This has been very helpful in finding movies to watch with my girlfriend, like Superbad.

If you piss her off she could really sabotage your conversations.

I know you mentioned Kung Fu Hustle up there. I think the Korean version has simplified Chinese Subs (unless this listing is wrong.)

http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/code-c/section-videos/pid-1004601267/

Also, the Korean version is uncensored, the movie in its original form, the US version has a handful of seconds of violence cut out for whatever reason.

I own the Korean version (it's region free and plays fine on my US PS3.)

If you'd like I can pop it in when I get home from work and verify whether or not it has them (or verify that at least something comes up on the screen when that option is selected, I wouldn't be able to tell if it's actually simplified Chinese as opposed to traditional Chinese, Korean, or Japanese.)

It'd be appreciated. It's easy to tell if it's Chinese VS Korean or Japanese subtitles. If you see a lot of "O" looking characters it's not Chinese and is probably one of the other two. Unlike Chinese and Japanese, Korean actually has an alphabet and you'll see the same characters over and over.

I think the American version of Kung Fu Hustle also has Chinese subs. I know I was pissed that the original Cantonese was only in PCM, so I couldn't have 5.1 with my PS3 (and optical cable.) It was also funny when my girlfriend said, "It's not in Chinese!" and I didn't know what she meant at first.

Actually, it doesn't. We were going to sit down and watch the Blu-ray with my mother-in-law and couldn't. She doesn't speak Cantonese, the disk doesn't have a Mandarin language track, and it didn't have any Chinese subs either.

So we had to watch something else instead. It was kind of embarrassing. :-)

A small note about the different Chinese subs is that although they can be subdivided into Cantonese and Traditional or Simplified Mandarin, people who know Cantonese or Mandarin can usually understand all three types of subtitles. I know the Cantonese ones sometimes use diction that may be slightly awkward to Mandarin speakers, they are still comprehensible.

It REALLY depends on the translator. Some Cantonese subtitle uses all kinds of slang that is 50% not readable by people outside of Hong Kong, while other times only 2% of slang is used. Also, there are also the reading speed issue involved. As we know a lot of times subtitles go by really fast. If it's not in your native type of Chinese, an extra 0.3 second needed to understand each line can severly impact the enjoyment of the movie.

As with all lists of this type, the OP comes back in and updates it when people have posted their changes. If no one posts info to change, the list doesn't get changed.

The tier threads work the same way.

BTW, the first post has been modified. Thanks for the resurrection! :-)

Hey thanks for updating that post. I'll dig through it when I get a sec... And yes, when in doubt, so far Traditional seems to be the most popular. (Short explanation - More complicated squiggles ^_^)

No problem - I realized I had broken my links since I made that post when reading through the thread today. The unofficial Blu-ray stats thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=760714) is also a good resource to track, since the audio and subtitle listings in that thread are taken from direct disc scans.

I was considering possibly posting subtitle picture snippets in this thread for identification of unspecified Chinese script, if there interest in something like that. I'll have to experiment with the workflow, however, to make sure that it would not be too much of a pain. :)

There are definitely a number of exceptions to this - one recent example being The Happening which only has English/Spanish subtitles. Other Fox discs without Chinese subtitles that I own or have rented include Juno, Kingdom of Heaven, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Meet the Spartans, Mr. Magorium and The Transporter films. I imagine there are plenty of others.

Die Hard 1-3 definitely have them (marked as Cantonese subs on box and in menus). Not sure about Die Hard 4 since I don't have that one, but its back cover (http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.asp?item_id=1365009&tab=5&back=1&anchor=1#topoftabs) looks the same as the others, so it probably does as well.

Yes, there's a small blurb in the first post that says unless otherwise stated, these are all NA releases. (It's easy to miss)

I finally got around to trying my subtitle extraction experiment and I present my first results from Horton Hears a Who which lists "Cantonese" and "Mandarin" subs on the box.

For the following images, I took the first 25 frames from the two listed Chinese subtitle streams and put them into animated GIF files. Hopefully that's a sufficient number in most cases for identifying the language. I wouldn't exactly call the process of creating these "easy", but if anyone thinks this might be useful for verifying the languages I can make more and also explain how I created them.

They are both Traditional Chinese and would be readily understood in HK and Taiwan but if spoken would be in Taiwan. Subtitle 1 perhaps has a hint of HK-ese expression but is not really Cantonese dialect when spoken. It sounds very odd.

I have never seen a movie or TV drama from anywhere (including HK) which has Cantonese dialect written out as subtitles. There is no such thing as Cantonese subtitle. Only someone ignorant of the lingo from studios would use that label.

I can tell which is which, TC or SC, usually with one line.

thanks for doing this. i'm a US expat in taiwan and have a chinese girlfriend.
i had a similar problem with finding north american SD DVDs with traditional chinese subtitles while living here.

now if i want to order a NA blu-ray disc, i'm encountering the same problems again. thankfully, yesasia.com has a great and highly configurable search engine. i don't necessarily order from them; i just use their inventory as a reference.

just click on blu-ray, traditional chinese subtitles and US version and it will filter out all the discs that meet those criteria. of course, this also works with SD DVDs.

i can't post the link because this is my first post. =(

hope this helps!

btw, the filters only come up if you select a specific movie area: ie. western / world

Please add the BBC series "Wild China" as having Traditional Chinese subtitles.

And I'm not sure if you want to include imports but "Red Cliff" (part 1) has both Traditional and Simplified Chinese subtitles while "Ip Man" has Traditional subtitles.

Thanks!

Correct it has chinese audio (supposedly Taiwanese according to the pulldown and subtitiles). After 400+ blu rays, I think i know the difference.. ;)

I would assume they mean Taiwanese Mandarin with traditional subs. The odds of Disney bothering to dub and subtitle a movie in Taiwanese are basically zero.

There is a problem that causes confusion for everyone contributing. I suggest Chirpie to rephrase the rule for this thread to clarify whether we are talking about the US version or Canada version as it only says "North American" right now and Canada may be using different discs.
Problem like this would happen from someone contributing Bolt BD for "Canada, Asia & Latin America" which does include Canada which is part of "north America", but is different from the US version. I'm not sure how many titles in the list right now are for Canada and not US at this time but I think it's better to clarify so it won't confuse other readers.

You know, that's a very good suggestion. It's a bit of ignorance on my part since it's somewhat uncommon (or so I thought) to have a separate release version for Canada VS the US. (outside of packaging, ratings, etc.) I'll give others a day or two to come up with a counter argument. For now, how's this sound?

"This thread is for North American Blu-ray releases only. Unless Specified, all releases are the US disc versions of the film."

Then, in the instance of Bolt, we can put in parentheticals, (Found on Canadian release ONLY)

If someone has a suggestion for a clearer way to say it, I'm all ears. :-) I'll amend the first post after people weigh in.

If your disc doesn't match the box, that is the sign that you didn't get US version disc. You most likely got the Canadian version disc in a US version box. (manufacturing mistakes perhaps?) Does it have BD-Live features. Disney only have BD-Live for US discs right now.

My friends and me got the US BD from Best Buy and Toys R Us and Target and there is no Chinese.

Besides BD-Live, your disc has a lot more audio (eight total, I know it even without anyone telling me) and subtitles than the US disc, which only has English and Spanish. Actually your disc is more attractive then the real US version for people that prefer to have Chinese on the disc.

How exactly are you verifying that you don't have chinese subs / audio? I run all my BD's on my HTPC, validate them all with BDINFO which extracts all video, audio, and subtitle information for me to readily see. Afterwards, I run the BD through PowerDVD and confirm that they have the appropriate audio/subtitles.

PS - There are also various BD titles which state they have Chinese on the box (e.g., The Happening), but don't otherwise with the disk. Don't rely on the box alone.

There is a Setup section on the disc when you play the disc to see what audio and subtitles are available. I know box info is not accurate but Setup section on the disc is 99.9% accurate otherwise it should not pass quality check.

I do believe you that you have Chinese on YOUR disc because such discs do exist, just not meant for the US market.

You haven't really answered if your disc have BD-Live, which is stated on the US box, but most likely absent on your disc.

We aren't really talking about whether YOUR disc have Chinese, but whether your disc is the US version.

Last thing I can tell you, which I will just PM you, which will hopefully convince you.

Uhh... where did I get my Netflix from? The mailbox? Sorry I'm not trying to be an ass but I don't really understand the question...

I don't have the BD disk with me anymore since I sent it back to Netflix to get my next movie, but I'm 100% sure it didn't have Chinese of any kind (looked through all the options in the settings). I was actually pretty excited at first to see from the forum that Bolt supposedly had Chinese on it cuz I hate having to explain the movie for non-English speakers in the house...

So.. I just bought 'The Happening' on BD recently. It clearly says that it supported Mandarin subtitles.. the whole reason why I bought it. But of course, popping it into my ps3, there were only English and French. Go figure. Anyway, thought I'd share that, plus hopefully someone would be able to confirm that as well. That would be much appreciated.

So it looks like the Ultimate Editions of Harry Potter 1 and 2 won't have Chinese subtitles which is ridiculous because Harry Potter 2 already had Chinese subtitles and I was hoping that both of these would. This does not bode well for Half-Blood Prince. I will be very disapppointed if it doesn't have Chinese subtitles.

EDIT: It looks like it's for sure that Half-Blood Prince doesn't have Chinese subtitles based on the Year 1-6 back cover. In fact, it looks like they're taking OFF many of the subtitles from the other discs as well. I have no idea why movie studios are doing this when Blu-rays have all of this space. It seems arbitrary.

You must have gotten a Asian/Latin America version (I think it's a shared disc as you can tell by the audio/subs it includes). If you go to the end of movie, they will list the voice actors.

I found this article http://blog.udn.com/amberriver/2432542 that states that Penny is actually dubbed by the daughters of Bolt's voice actor, who is a famous Taiwan TV producer. It's really funny as a father becomes his own daughters' pet in the movie!

It is not strange to have more then a dozen versions of ANY movie floating around in the world. Movie studios include different audio/subs/bonus for different regions. As there are only 3 regions for blu-ray, there are more versions of the same movie that can be played in a region.

Fight Club also has Subtitles. Amazon claims it has both types. I can't verify this, but I know for a FACT (since I have the movie but not here at work) that it at least has Mandarin subtitles.

Also, thanks for making a list like this. My Chinese wife's parents are staying with us for a few months and they don't speak English, and I'm looking for movies that they could watch with us that aren't just Chinese movies brought over to America. I can stand only so many movies that are about the ancient China and/or Kung Fu.

One thing that I HATE (which we ran into last night when we rented a DVD) is when they list "Chinese" as a language option, not specifying if it's Mandarin or Cantonese. Unfortunately, it turned out to be Cantonese and we couldn't watch the movie as a result. It was a complete waste of a rental and I can't get money back as a result. Well, maybe I could if I pressed Hollywood Video enough but I don't feel like complaining about that when there's PLENTY of other things I could complain about at that store..

It's really a shame that the Blu-ray meta-tagging scheme does not provide for a finer-grained method for identifying language variants - especially for Mandarin/Cantonese spoken and Traditional/Simplified character sets. For both audio and subtitles, the tracks are simply tagged with the three-letter code "zho" which means "Chinese". It requires someone with the proper experience to manually distinguish tracks or reliance on the studios to provide some kind of consistent explanation in the menus or packaging, which obviously they do not - thus, the great value of a thread like this.

A similar situation exists for other common language variants - e.g. Parisian/Québécois "fra" French, Latin American/Castellano "spa" Spanish and Brazilian/Portugal "por" Portuguese - although as far as I know these are not as mutually incomprehensible as Chinese dialects. An unfortunate situation, so hopefully you can forgive those who are not familiar enough with the nuances of these languages to identify them by sound/sight and misreport them occasionally based on insufficient information from the studios themselves.

Well a number that I've seen will be courteous and give both Mandarin and Cantonese. Actually the movie we ended up watching (which was nearly 2 hours I'll never get back) I'm pretty sure was originally in Cantonese but had a Mandarin track. The ones that only provide one or the other are the most frustrating, followed up by only having Cantonese dialog and then Mandarin subtitles, meaning everyone in the house except ME can enjoy the movie.

A note about "There's something about Mary":

I watched this with my wife and her family the other day, and when we watched with the Mandarin subtitles she claimed that they were still Complex symbols. As an experiment I switched over to the "Cantonese" subtitles and she claimed that those were also Complex/Traditional symbols. So according to her, the movie only has Traditional subtitles, as seems to be the case with most of these Fox Blu Ray releases. But again, she claimed she and her family could understand it fine so it wasn't a deal breaker.

If my understanding is correct, Cantonese is also based on the same traditional fonts. The only differences are the fonts they use on the slangs. Mandarin speaking people should be able to understand most of the writings in Cantonese, and vice versa.

Dan Average

Both Cantonese and Mandarin can be written in either simplified or traditional characters, although many characters used in Cantonese aren't used in Mandarin (and vice-versa). Cantonese speakers have no problem with written Mandarin because written Mandarin is essentially Standard Written Chinese (baihua), which is understood by all literate Chinese. Pure written Cantonese has far more differences than just slang -- different particles, different pronouns, different grammatical points (direct object-indirect object instead of the other way around), etc. -- and is pretty difficult for non-Cantonese speakers without special instruction. But true written Cantonese is very rare in subtitles; "Cantonese" subs are usually more-or-less standard Chinese with some localisms thrown in.

As for the characters themselves, my impression is that most literate Chinese can recognize both simplified or traditional characters with only a bit of practice, but being able to write in both forms is more difficult.

Ein
03-30-10, 02:05 PM
I think you are just reading too much into it.

In sub-title, Mandarin is usually means simplified character and Cantonese means traditional. In english movies with Chinese sub-title. I have not seen any use of Cantonese slangs.

Taiwanese speaks Mandarin, but their written language is Traditional. And 90% of Cantonese in mainland China can't read Traditional.

I think it's stupid to label sub-title as Mandarin and Cantonese. Those terms are referred to spoken dialect, not written. It should be Traditional and Simplified.

Dan Average
03-31-10, 09:33 AM
In sub-title, Mandarin is usually means simplified character and Cantonese means traditional. In english movies with Chinese sub-title. I have not seen any use of Cantonese slangs.

Some of the titles marked as "Cantonese" (C) in the master list most definitely have some specifically Cantonese vocabulary and syntax -- posters on Chinese-language forums confirm Night at the Museum and the Die Hard BDs, for example. They may still be comprehensible to a non-Cantonese speaker, but they're not standard. And "semi-Cantonese" subs are quite common for English-language movies in Hong Kong cinemas, although the video releases may only have standard subs.

I don't disagree that some studios (mainly Fox) muddy the waters by indiscriminately using "Cantonese" when they really just mean Standard Chinese in traditional characters. And subtitles in pure Cantonese are rarely if ever used for English-language films; at most "Cantonese" usually just means baihua with some Cantonese elements. But "Hong Kong-style subtitles" should be distinguished in some way.

As for your 90% figure, I can only speak anecdotally, but it seems far too high to me. Based on my experiences with mainlanders, a traditional character in isolation might be unreadable, but a running text seems to provide enough contextual clues to work out most non-obvious characters ("obvious characters" being things like 馬, 門, 東, 國 etc. that virtually every mainlander already knows). This is especially true for subtitles, which are generally written at a fairly low level; a lot of bootleg DVDs sold in China use only traditional characters for subs (and sometimes even the packaging). Admittedly I live in northern China, so I really only deal with Mandarin-speakers, but I don't see why it would be different for Cantonese-speaking mainlanders.
