If I get a disc from someone who recorded something on her dvd r that's not a Philip, shouldn't I be able to transfer that disc onto my hard drive? I tried and it won't let me.

Set your HDD for the rec mode you want the disc to copy at, put the disc in the tray, start it playing, then press the DIRECT DUBBING button... bottom row, 2nd button from right.

The disc will be copied from its beginning, regardless of when you start the dub (as long as it's not copy-protected).
