View Full Version : The mysterious "much more expensive" products
CADOBHuK 05-01-08, 04:41 PM Every single sub or speaker model I've seen on the web always says on the manufacturer's page that it "matches much more expensive sub/speakers" or "performs in a way you'd expect from products costing 3-5 times more".
But I've never seen those much more expensive products themselves, anywhere, can anyone give me a link?
MKtheater 05-01-08, 04:53 PM How much is a Velo dd-18? If you compare a great $1000 sub today(castle, 2 mfw-15) to it are they very close in performance? If so, then there it is. The Krell master reference sub cost $40k, we can compare everything to it and say 40 times the cost for similar performance. How is that for a deal.
jimsfield 05-01-08, 05:03 PM Please refer to the following links. The first shows an independent reviewers ranking of dual MFW15s from AV123 and the JL Audio Fathom F113. The second shows the price for a JL Audio Fathom F113. The third shows the price for dual MFW15s.

I trust this answers your question. (for some reason the 2nd link is blocked. It's a reference to an eBay auction.)
MKtheater 05-01-08, 05:10 PM jimsfield,
LOL, CADOBHuK is very familiar with the list.
CADOBHuK,
I think I know where you are coming from. They are comparing to the famous and expensive name brands in B&M shops. Now there are more ID companies making subs for similar prices. Even so, many more B&M shops than ID companies making subs.
I'm still not tired of looking at this comparison of a $1,600 subwoofer to two others subs; one that costs $11,000, and another that costs $15,000.

I am waiting to see if any manufacturer submits any sub at any price that can unseat the new number one.
CADOBHuK 05-01-08, 05:35 PM I was just trying to make fun of the advertising. The banners on this forum saying certain speakers are as good as "much more expensive" ones, in particular.
jimsfield 05-01-08, 06:18 PM And I was just trying to have some fun in return. Communicating over these forums makes it difficult to convey the subtleties in our communication that face to face or even voice to voice permits.

As others have indicated, there is a world outside our little corner of the 'net. I know it's hard for many to believe.
If you look at just (alphabetic order), AV123, ED, Epik, Hsu, and SVS, you have a set of companies all with their sights on top value offerings. I think you might be surprised how small a % of the total subwoofer market (retail & install included) these 5 companies make up. You would probably be even more surprised at the % of total sales are on the net as opposed to retail, etc. As with most enthusiast based industries, the hot products are still big fish in some relatively small ponds.
CADOBHuK 05-01-08, 10:47 PM Actually I know about this whole "ID vs retail" and "enthusiast vs average consumer" thing but the marketing slogans seem to be applied to just about everything.
freeflap 05-01-08, 11:18 PM true
id is still small. Most of my tech saavy friends have NEVER heard of any of these companies, but they know B&W, polk, B*se, Mirage, Snell, velodyne, def tech because these companies do advertise in stereophile, hometheaterAV, etc...
The older id such as Hsu and SVS are a little better known.
Just got to get the word out....
Good friends of mine were all set to buy a fairly expensive HT setup when they happened to come over and listen to my upstairs AV123 REF3/REF100/REF1 setup. They couldn't believe the sound and the price. was about 2/3 what there were prepared to spend and the AV123 blew away what they were looking at. needlesstosay, they cancelled their plans, and bought the identical REF setup. Couldn't be happier. Although it was a good 2-3 month wait.
'Cheap at twice the price' has been a marketing catch phrase for a long time and has been used to market many different products. It gets people to look and quite often buy without actually checking out the more expensive alternatives. When it comes to speakers, comparing your products to more expensive products is fairly safe as most people won't be able to discern the subtle improvements in the sound reproduction of the higher priced speakers. Cheaper speakers will perform more than adequately for most people and they will feel they got a bargain. For most people, it is a bargain. But there will always be consumers that will pay premium prices for a name, features they will probably never use, or for qualities that don't contribute to the products function or performance. And there are people that can appreciate the differences no matter how minute.
It's a good thing to have companies that can sell high priced products as they are usually the companies investing in R&D. They need to charge premium prices to recoup those costs. Eventually, the new technology will find it's way into the consumer market at lower costs. So let's give a hearty Booyah for $35,000 speaker manufacturers and the people that can afford to buy them.

"I heard things on the recording I never heard before"
that's audio writers for you

That's axiomatic, isn't it? "When I listened to the recording I never heard before, I heard things."
JOHNnDENVER 05-02-08, 05:47 PM I was going to post.. "Don't get out much do you?"
I thought better of it...
But it's really meant as a joke you know... :)
