View Full Version : Spl readings
ronerik 05-01-08, 06:36 PM I was wondering what you guys hit during the War of the Worlds Pod scene at reference with your sub. With my PC Ultra13 I hit 107db. Sub corner located and 7 ft from listening spot. Not the loudest it will go (gain at half, volume at 65 on Onkyo 605), but that's at my reference volume (or should I say the wifes!!!).

JBLsound4645 05-02-08, 10:35 AM Oh we’re back to this film again are we! I’ve moved home in the past several months so therefore the tone is going to be different at the new home.
One I’ve already tried it out in the smaller room but was getting too many evening complaints that the sub bass lows where shaking the concrete floor two floors below me. LOL now if you believe that story, “shaking the concrete floor” that’s what the neighbour said.:D
Now I’ve moved into a different room so I’m not directly on top of the bedrooms because the JBL home cinema was original placed in the bedroom and the living room was the bed room for at least 4 months.
So now I’ve changed rooms and I still have a few more odds and bobs to add to it and its partly up and running with good matching JBL LCR fronts and wicked JBL surround.
The JBL 4645 I try to keep it a lower level because even The Spy Who Loved Me when submarine fires a torpedo at the oil tanker doors shock the concrete floor with jolt, now then!:)
I’ve just gone to the bedroom and picked out War of The Worlds (2005) and I’m going to see how it fairs in the larger room. I might have to make some adjustments to obtain the best low end under its technical tolerance levels.
I see there is thread dedicated to this madness, I’ll have look at it.
ronerik 05-02-08, 07:31 PM Ok, let me change this. What are your spl readings from anyone who has a PB 13 Ultra or a PC Ultra 13?
MKtheater 05-02-08, 08:44 PM I was just kidding with you. You do realize that every room will differ. How big is your room? What tune are you running? All this will determine how loud it will play? You could be in a null if you think that is too low. The gain on the sub does not matter if you have calibrated it and at reference levels. Turn the gain up on your pre/pro or AVR and see what happens. You may like it better a few db's hot. I run my subs 6 db's hot when at 10-20 db's below reference and flat at reference.

I'll check tomorrow. Are you referring to the DTS soundtrack? I can hit 110 dB at about 15 ft
in 20 Hz mode with other tracks.
Ron Temple 05-03-08, 02:50 AM When checking for peaks you need to set the SPL meter to fast. At reference level from 11ft I hit 115dbs a couple of times with the PB13. At the slow setting you won't see those peaks.
Jesse S 05-03-08, 03:15 AM SPL without distortion specs is fairly pointless. 115db on my IB sounds very different from a single PB13 at 115db.
JBLsound4645 05-03-08, 06:21 AM How about what SPL readings it register at in the cinema? Since that is the first place of getting any readings, so next time you go to the cinema take along the SPL db meter with you. Don’t think, do it!:)

My local THX certified cinemas, think i measured tops at about high 100s in one of them. Then it happened, people wrote to the newspaper forums and asked for it to be turned down. Not exactly very loud by this forum's standards btw esp in the DIY section. BTW I'm from Singapore.

Are you talking about Orchard Cineplex behind Meritus Mandarin? I've noticed that their bass is not very tight.
Are there other THX-certified cinemas in Singapore?

High 100's not very loud? In all the years I was in the car audio business I never heard that level of bass. I've seen 160+ spls destroy a cars windshield, never mind your hearing. I think low 100's is more likely.

I think he meant somewhere in the range of 100 to 110 dB.
Raymond Leggs 05-07-08, 05:30 PM I wish I had a sub so loud the house would rip off its foundation

Lol. I think Mr. Leggs should worry about getting ANY subwoofer at this point ;). He can worry about having the house "rip off of its foundation" later.
