View Full Version : Help with very odd speaker hum

Mahr

I recently moved into a new apartment and now I am experiencing a hum in all my speakers.

Equipment:
Integra DTR 6.5
HSU Research STF-2 powered sub
HSU research ventriliqust speakers (4 + center)
My only input is digital optical from my xbox 360.

The Problem:
I get intermittent speaker hum through all my speakers when the sub is plugged in. The hum seems to occur more often at night. In fact, I can't recall it ever humming in the morning. My theory is that there is something noisy in the building that only runs at night. Sometimes the hum will appear on its own, sometimes when I kneel close to the receiver. The hum doesn't seem to change tone when I move around though, except sometimes it will fade and then pop out (pop, but not a very loud pop). The hum will occur with no inputs plugged into the receiver.

The Sub does not hum when plugged into my friends receiver. I haven't gotten up the courage to bring my receiver down to his house as that'd cause both of us a lot of work.

What I have tried:
Let me start with the "solution". The only reliable way I've found to stop the hum is to run my laptop via mini-jack into an input. Also, the laptop must be plugged into the wall. If I unplug the power cable the hum comes back. I think this is the most important clue, but I'm not sure what it means. It sounds like dirty power to me.

I have all my equipment going into one outlet in the wall. Both the receiver and sub have two prong power cables. I have tried running the power strip into the wall using a two prong cheater plug.

I have tried running a long heavy duty extension cable to the other side of the apartment.

I tried running the sub into the receiver.

I've tried plugging both devices into a furman PL-Plus which is supposed to clean the power.

I have been reading the FAQ and posts and trying everything I can think of, but I'm at a loss. Does anyone know why plugging in my laptop would help? Can I buy a cheap portable CD player with AC adapter and go that route? Is it possible the receiver is broken? I moved it by hand so it shouldn't have been jostled too much.

Thanks!
