places to import from:
www.amazon.fr (use you amazon.com sign-in and all your information will work)
www.amazon.co.uk
www.fnac.com (french based store with online store)
http://xploitedcinema.com (great import site, they are selling off the remaining stock and calling it quits so import while you can)

Hello. I am of no help, but I am curious what you have found so far! I have both BD and HD players. feel free to list here, or PM, thanks!

I would love to see Le Poulpe on hi-def region free. Shoot, I'd like to see it on region free DVD. I loved how quirky and humorous this film was.

I wonder if Jeunet/Caro's City of Lost Children or Delicatessen will ever be given quality transfers to hi-def. The first is a visual feast, and the second is my favorite film of theirs. Cheers!

http://bluray.liesinc.net/index.php?region=b

has a few french films listed.

I can HIGHLY recommend ne le dis a personne (tell no one) and OSS 117 which is very funny. Both of which are region free (w/english subs) and have very good transfers.

Days of Glory is also out in the UK (region free). I will most likely pick up L'ennemi intime as well soon (if it has english subs).

I order my french blus fron fnac.com (I live in England) who I find cheaper but amazon.fr may be cheaper depending on title/where you live. Its a shame french blus are quite expensive.

ne le dis a personne was a movie I was thinking about. May import that via amazon.fr their shiping has been very good the last few orders..
Seems like most non main stream movies are region free. Just the movies that have a US or could be US are.

How about some french Music? I've got sheryfa luna which is very good as well as edith paif.

Not sure if you've seen ne le dis a personne but once again i highly recommend people check it out. Great film and very good pq, it is probably my most watched blu-ray.

If you like Piaf then you should pick up la mome, as the french release unlike the canadian one has english subs (except during the songs). Cant say I was overly impressed with the film but I do seem to be in the minority.

Cant really recommend much music as I'm more of a world cinema buff than world music.

I do in fact have the HD-DVD of la môme from amazon france. It was a very good movie. Which is why I got the CD.

Thanks a lot guys....

IIRC, there isn't any dialogue whatsoever in Les Triplettes des Belleville, but is the HD-DVD region free? (I know this is BD forum, but, please say yes?) Where is an easy place to reference regions, please? I am very new to this....

OSS 117 is unavailable at Amazon Fr. Otherwise, all of the available recs here are in my "panier". Im afraid of the currency exchange, but screw it.

Im conversational in French, but can't understand everything. Its actually very difficult for me to decide when to put the subtitles on or off, because sometimes the translations are so different, or lacking. I only mention this in the case that L'ennemi intime is more difficult with the language.

on the subject of foreign films... has anyone heard if Emir Kustarica films might appear on a hi-def format?

Thanks me-uk.

Maybe I should wait for the english subs too. I mean, even if the language happens to be simple enough, I guess my friends wouldn't enjoy it...

I wonder of Triplettes is to come out on BD anytime soon.

Have any of you guys seen Le Poulpe?

its oss 117 (not 177) if you type:

Yes it 100% has english subs (apart from during one brief song). I live in England but it is region free (both links confirm so):

I must have watched my bd 3 or 4 times and still enjoy it.

http://bluray.liesinc.net/index.php?region=b is still the best. The other option is searching here and other popular blu ray forums. I'm lucky that england is the same region as france so dont have to worry about coding. However finding accurate info about whether a film has english subs is more difficult as I have found lots of sites have inaccurate information (eg from what I've heard Science of Sleep doesnt have english subs despite most french sites saying it does).

L'ennemi intime is region free. Tested on an A PS3. Good English subs, but they're tiny. And I mean really tiny. Think DVD res subs shrunken to scale on a 1080p image. Otherwise no complaints, 2 discs, good quality, good value proposition.

Id like to get sweeney todd as well but it's roughly $50 which is a bit much. Hopfully tony at xploited gets sweeney as theirs a few PAL DVDs I want so if I add those to the order it may not fell so bad.

You do know that "Les 400 coups" is in the first batch of Criterion blu-rays (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1027107).

Are there more in the international blu-ray threads? I'll certainly be keeping any eye out for chances to improve my French comprehension;)

Well I got my movies in saturday only took 1 week from france so not to bad. I didn't get the movies in hand until sunday night as I was up north.

Any way I was able to watch ne le dis a personne. It was a very goods movie keeped me watching the entire show. The PQ was very good. I can't comment on the AQ at this time as I didn't have my system on just the TV spekers (it was late, others were sleeping). The plot of the movie was a bit like the fugitve but still very different. I would highly recomend this movie. The english subs seemed pretty good but I did notice a few words being changed from what was spoken in french.

Only down side is the extra appear to be in PAL so my PS3 wouldn't play them. Id select somthing and it woulf pause for a momment only to go back to the main menu.

I will be watching l'ennemi intime tonight after work. I will report back and may tweak the first film a bit.

Need a little assistance, as annoying as I might sound.

Regarding Ne le dis a personne & l'ennemi intine, just how good is the PQ? Could anyone make a subjective comparison with a different "Tier 0" or "Tier 1" film?
Any thoughts on the PQ of Triplettes-Belleville?

I never bought any titles, because the currency exchange is freaking me out just a bit. However, now I realize I'll blow some money on Criterion releases, but at least I know that I am getting top notch PQ there, when that time comes.

If the titles in this thread are of Top-Notch PQ, I will much more likely to pay the premium. Otherwise, no. After all, I have no idea about these movies, as much as I might like foreign film. For an expensive "blind" buy, I want to have my cake and eat it too. I trust the forum members' opinions here.

I'm watching on a 159" HP screen with RS-1. 42 degree viewing angle from front row. Thank you very much.

homerx
05-27-08, 01:18 PM
I watched l'ennemi intime also a very good movie well worth the cost. The PQ was very good. I didn't notice any issues clean picture till the end so id say teir 1. Great PQ no Poping effect but HD for sure. The subs were a bit small as commpared to other movies but I could read them and keep up with them. Both film I got were very different so I can't rank one over the other but if I had to watch one 2 times in a row in would be this film.

Good plot, good acting another filnm that keeps you watching till the end.

Tonight I will be watching Rambo as that just came out. I was going to hold off as I heard a DC is in the works but I can't wait.

just wondering--looking at the Gaumont site there it says "Chrysalis" is "zone 2" which I guess is supposed to be the same as region B. But people seem to be saying that it is region free. Is this correct? Any reason the site doesn't list "all zone" or something similar. I see "zone 2" listed for some others as well. Are all the gaumont bd's region free?
thanks!

I'm pretty sure that have all been region free thus far, atleast I know the science of sleep, oss 117 and chrysalis have all been reported to be region free.

hello, here is a link on our french forum 'HCFR' where we keep track of region coding films - maybe it will help you (and I'm glad there are amateurs of french films here ;) ...)

i just ordred days of glory (indigènes) and sweeney todd on blu-ray via xploited. with the holiday i should have both film by tuesday maybe wendsday. total cost was about $85 bucks so a bit high.

my next order will be oss 117 and roman de gare from amazon france. oss 117 has a 8-14 day shipment delay so im going to wait until its back in stock soi can get both films at once. i figure early july the order will be put in.

sweeney todd should be good i just hope thier isnt a sudden US version. like oh comes out first week of july or somthing. im guessing september will be the anouncement hen a near xmas release. which i can live with and have the UK version

I see Xploited has OSS 117 in stock now. I thought about it but $44 is a bit to much right now. I may get it in the future but their still a few amazon.fr movies I want so OSS 117 should be added to that order. Just have to wait a bit as my last order spent my movie funds up.

le dernier gang
-Video:2.35:1
-Audio:5.1 DTS-HD, PCM
-Subs:None *french audio only* no subs or dubs of any kind

so far i watched Oss 117. it as a very funny movie. set in the 50s a james bond like spy working for frace is sent to egypt to investigate the death of another agent. this film is like a get smart type of film. i thought it looked very good for its style and setting. i picked it up at xploited for $44 bucks. le dernier gang came saturday. i gave the disc a quick spin to assure it works and to see if it it had subs.the few seconds i played looked and worked great.however there is no subs so those looking to import this one will have to remember its french audio only.. i imported it fomamazon fance for 33€.

There's a thread here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/archive/index.php/t-910850.html).

It looks like there may be bad news for some of us:

TVA's DVD edition of Amelie does not have English subtitles, and the Blu-ray will almost certainly not either. TVA only has distribution rights to the movie in French-speaking Canada. It's distributed by Alliance Atlantis in the English-speaking provinces. TVA is contractually prohibited from including English subtitles.

Regarding some of the multi region BD releases...

I recently bought the R2 UK edition of [REC] on regular DVD, and was wondering if anyone knows if the Blu Ray edition (I can't remember which country it was released in) will play on a Region A BD player (I have a Sharp BD-HP20U Blu-Ray Player). I tried the Uk R2 in my BD player, and it wouldnt play, however I have some Region B BD titles which do play in there, and I thought I read somewhere that some R2 SD titles would play in the player also...

Any thoughts? :)

Cheers!

I just wanted to repeat my wish for these things to happen. :o :(

Is there any chance in hell? Any of the above would make my day...

Just posting so I can get notified of updates. Still dont have a BluRay but will be going purple in the not to distant future so ready to start ordering French movies on BluRay....

I did notice someone mentioned Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis. I've seen it, not on BluRay, and its a decent movie. However, you really need to have a strong grasp of French and France because the basis of the movie is a guy from the south of France getting transfered to the northern region of France. Alot of the jokes have to do with the accent differences between the two regions as well as the climate differences.

I saw this as well, the DVD is made by Gaumount. they have several blu-rays out already. which so far all have been region free with english subs. so I'm hoping le dîner de cons will be the same way.

bienvenue chez les ch'tis came to blu-ray a few days ago.

acording to this site. the blu-ray is has a VC1 encode with french 5.1 dolby digital true HD and french subs. it also appers to be region free/ABC. it doesn't say if they could confirm this just the back of the box says ABC.

http://www.ecranlarge.com/dvd_review-list-5719.php

anyway I put a order in a few days ago and the box was sent out today. so I should have the movie by friday and will beable to confirm region freedom or if its locked. its a pathe fox title so I'm a bit worried about the freedom as very few films of theirs are free. but prehapps its just some films like this one that gain region freedom. we shall see.... if the film is locked I plan on getting a region free or B player at some point as theirs so many films I want from B areas that I don't want to always worry about region freedom

I do relize this is a very regional film so some "jokes" may pass me by but I feel I can still enjoy the film.
--edit--
so I found some more information at FNAC it appears the movie does have english subs and french for the hearing impared...
but I've found such sites to be off. as they offten copy the DVD info over. however they do list the HD specs so we will see...

http://video.fnac.com/a2413948/Bienvenue-chez-les-Ch-tis-Blu-Ray-Kad-Merad-Blu-Ray?Fr=20&To=0&Ra=-3

so, when I get the film I will let you all know what's going on and post stats and a short review when I get the film...

also, if anybody knows of any other confirmed french films of region freedom let me know and I will add it to the first page. be sure to include:

homerx
11-13-08, 09:57 AM
so I got:
bienvenue chez les ch'tis (playback issues)
taxi 3(playback issues)
taxi 4(region free, no subs, french audio)

only taxi 4 will play in my region A PS3. taxi 3 appears to be region free but has some type of PAL issues. prehapps the preveiws or opening screen are in PAL

Bienvenue chez les ch'tis appears to have a 25FPS issue the disc itself has a ABC on it. but when I load it into the PS3 the movie frezzes on tittle 37. so all I get is a blank screen. the time bar shows 00.00 runtime. so none of the options work on the remote. no FF/ next chapter or tittle change can be done.

on dec.2 the DVD comes to canada so I think I will order that then as its only a few weeks away now. I may still get the DVD from france as I have a PAL capable/region free DVD player

now onto taxi 4
great picture
no subs or dubs french audio only

I just ordered the following Blu-Rays from Amazon France:

Jean de Florette
Manon des Sources
La Gloire de Mon Pere
Le Chateau de Ma Mere
Les Visiteurs
Paris

I think Paris might be Region B only but I will find out soon enough. I am looking at options to deal with the region B issues. So far I have thought of:

1. Chip mod from ICOS HD
2. LG bh200
3. Buying a player from France and bringing back to the US in my suitcase.

Of course all the options have problems. The chip mod is the most tempting but perhaps the most difficult as it has to be installed. The preinstalled players cost 800$ which is absurd so I would have to find someone to do the install for me as I can't solder.

The LG player isnt bad but its not profile 2.0 and might have issues playing discs going forward.

Dragging a player back is compelling expect for the 110 to 220 voltage issues.

homerx
12-02-08, 12:25 PM
I think the LG BH200 is the best option at the moment. I'm really considering getting one.

I got bienvenue chez les ch'tis on blu-ray but due to some issues it won't play on an americain PS3. I'm thinking its a PAL or 25FPS issue. the LG can output this.

I also have the R2 DVD of bienvenue chez les ch'tis. I used my multi region DVD player yesterday. it was a great film very funny. the english subs were done very well and helped with many of the jokes. but id love to see this in HD. so either canada gets it or I get a player that can play such movies.

I think the player is the best option as their are many french blu-rays I want but many are locked.

I may have to pick up Les Visiteurs as ive never seen this version just the remake with the same actors they did a few years back

There's alot of interesting history for the US version of this film. Actually Mel Brooks bought the rights to the film in the US and planned a US remake. I even saw posters for the movie back in the day. The remake was to be done with US actors. It was never released and I dont know if it ever went into production.

Eventually Les Visiteurs was released in the US as a dreadful dubbed version that was 100% not funny. In fact I saw the dubbed version and it only managed to stay at the movies for 3 days here in Dallas. I strongly prefer the french version.

I have never seen "Just Visiting" aka " Les Visiteurs en Amerique" but it was met with very poor reviews.

However, I can highly recommend this original version of Les Visiteurs, one of the most popular French films in the history of French cinema. It is very very funny.

For cases that read ABC on the box but still don't play, there's the possibility of 50Hz mastering. If either your player or display can't handle that, you'll get no picture despite the disc being region free. If the BD35 is one of those players I don't know, but the US/Asian PS3 is for sure. Wouldn't play my region free french copy of Scorpion.

The disc was from BAC. A friend later came to me with a german BD of the film Eden Log that wouldn't play on his 60Hz only display. Same deal, BAC master that plays at 50Hz. Considering the possibly incompatibility, maybe this is info that should be added to the OP.

BD disc is available on amazon.fr and is region free, plays well on my BD55.

as for Manon des Sources et Jean de Florette, you are right it does not play on US/Canadian player. The players hangs after 5 seconds of playing. as noted here in previous posts, the problem might be related to 50/60hz mastering...this is really disapointing that this 50/60hz PAL/NTSC story is still on us... 16x9enhanced
01-01-09, 07:47 AM
Some of the BAC titles have been locked, but the worst is that there are forced French subs on the English language releases I believe.
"Wild at Heart" has the dreaded forced subs, but I'm not 100% positive about "the barber"
All I know is that BAC came out with a bunch of titles, and it was a disaster for region A people.
BAC is NOT NA friendly to say the least.
Out of all the region B countries, France consistently has the most locked or forced French sub, or no English sub titles. It really blows hard, but that's just the way it is.
The Nordic countries, on the other hand, don't seem to lock hardly any of their releases.

It's probably because France is one of the countries where customers protest the least against such an insulting practice.

The reason for forced subtitles is to divide the market even within one DVD region. Almost no non-french movie fan will want those discs.

A large majority of french movie viewers does not have enough english knowledge to watch movies in english without subtitles, and does not bother about this artificial limitation. But those who do must find DVDs elsewhere.

In Scandinavian countries, English knowledge is much better in general, and most movie fans would refuse to buy discs with forced local language subtitles.

German DVD labels at least indicate forced subtitles on the back cover, but french labels often do not.

it is all about contracts unfortunately.
what is strange to me is how a studio like Gaumont can be so different than say BAC.
Gaumont has many releases that are region free and do not have forced subs, and also have English sub options.
just don't understand how one French studio can be so NA friendly, but another so unfriendly.

You are missing "Le Grand Bleu" / Big Blue in Enlish.

I will try to remasterized on my PC when I have a chance... luckily we have slysoft with AnyDVD HD...

Manon des sources and Jean de Florette do not play correctly with ANYDVDHD. In fact on all the French BD I have up to now these are the only one that do not work with on HTPC. Probably a software player Issue (I am using ARCSOFT TMT). Something I need to debug.

More and more of the europeen movies I ordered are region lock. Annoying!

Yesterday I received:

Le casanova (Fellini)
Itinéraire d'un Enfant Gaté (Lelouch)

I need to test tonight if they are working on my BDP-05HD (Region A Player)

This is really weird. I don't think they are Region coded, I think they are just badly mastered. When you are in the Top Menu and start the movie, the image just flicker but the audio is working fine. I found a workaround to make it work on a PC, I force the software player to resync during the movie playback by changing the output frequency. I start to load the disk with 1080p25 until the movie start and the image start glitching. Then I change the resolution of the video card to 1080p24. This force the Player to resync properly.

We can add 99 Francs and Angel-A to the list of films that are region locked.

99 Francs and Angel-A have no subtitles at all.

I also received Deux Jours a Tuer which as mentioned above is region locked. However, it does have English subtitles for those with a region free player.

Perhaps we could make this thread a list of both films that are and are not region restricted?

La Piscine
region:free,ABC
Video: 1080p AVC 1.66
Audio: Dolby Digital mono French for French version and English for English version
subs: French only for the english version, no english subs for French version or supplements

I received La Piscine today. I'm so excited. The english version is indeed an entirely english filmed version of the film. It also appears to be a high def transfer for the english version. It is a region free disc.

I am very pleased with the transfer which at first glance appears very clean. Of note, the aspect ratio is 1.66 which is better IMHO since that respects the original framing. The audio is dolby digital mono.

The French version has no subtitles and the english version has French subtitles only but they can be turned off. I did notice a bit of dialogue in German so without subtitles English speakers will miss a bit but if I recall ( havent seen the film in years) there's not much German.

On a down note, some of the supplements are not in high def despite being on the blu-ray disc. Consequently I can only hear the audio and see a black screen on my Panasonic Blu-Ray player. Must be in PAL. However, oddly on my LG200 I can see the video for the supplements. Supplements are in French only.
