I'll admit to being completely new here, so I'm trying to soak up as much as possible as quickly as possible. I'm new to adjusting an HD tv, but I've been a software engineer for over 20 years, so I figure I can figger it out as long as I have the correct data.

I have a Sony 36XBR450 that I'm noticing has an overscan problem when running 1080i (ok, I'll admit to discovering it when playing on my xbox 360). Are the service menu discussions in the Sony Service Codes thread applicable to my set?

I'm certainly not going to wade in thinking I'm an expert, so I'll start small and hope for small, incremental changes. I know my wife has never liked the set since we brought it home, so here's hoping that it's just a case of a poor calibration.

Thanks.

Best thing to do is jump into your service menu and see if it has the same categories and subcategories that the Service Codes thread mentions. If so, then you're golden. You'll want to start with universal adjustments, then input-specific adjustments. See what settings you have available under 2170D, MID 1 and MID 2 categories and post them here.

If it's an older set (5+ years or so) you'll likely have fewer available commands than the last generation Sonys.

I'm sure that my original Sony remote is somewhere in the house, but we haven't used it in years, instead using a generic multi remote. What does the "display" button do that I see referenced in the service menu access sequence?

I'm trying to determine if the multi remote I have will give us access to the key strokes necessary. Can the service menu be accessed via the front buttons on the console itself?

Thanks.

I would recommend trying to find the original remote. You don't want to hit the wrong buttons while in the service menu. The results can be disasterous.
