Anybody have an opinion on which console is a better media extender - PS3 or 360?

Some background:

I've had an original Xbox with XBMC for a few years now, and it's the cat's meow. But, it's going to the spare room now and never handled HD content well, so I've started using my 360 to stream video files. It works pretty well, but doesn't feel as polished as XBMC - especially for audio - and there are still a few codecs XBMC will play that the 360 won't.

Recently I've been toying with the idea of getting a PS3 to take over streaming duties and get the added bonus of Blu-Ray playback. But, I'm in no hurry to get a Blu player - so this really comes down to which system is better at streaming media.

Assume that games are also a non-issue for this decision, since there aren't any exclusives on the PS3 I personally want, and I barely have time to play the games I have anyway. :)

I own both systems and I can tell you that the ps3 is fine too. I did noticed the a the ps3 doesnt play " all the divx " files, whereas the 360 will just play them..( xbmc plays them all ) :)

I have my system set up using xp media connect.

I know that the ps3 would work best with media player 11. ( i dont like it cuz its bloated so i leave media connect on instead )

As for blueray its great.

nothing beats XBMC i just wish they would port it on a higher hardware ps3 or one of the newer media servers out. Imagine in on tvix or popcorn hour like device. would be insane

The 360 doesn't play ALL DivX files. PCM audio tracks are an issue when it comes to playing back DivX files, at least the ones I've got, and probably others as well but I don't have any WMV's with PCM audio.

I have both the PS3 and Xbox 360, and I use both for streaming. I would say that both are about the same. Maybe the 360 is a tiny bit better with some files, but overall about the same. I just use TVersity whenever I need to play a file neither of the 2 consoles can play. Works like a charm. ;)

Do they play .ISO files of a NAS?

I'd love to see a XBMC interface on top of something like a Popcorn Hour / NMT media streamer.

Any thoughts on what comes close?
