I took the back cover off the tv to see if it was the lamp cooling fan or worse. It was worse. The color wheel is making the humming sound and after some research, I have found this is the beginning of the end for the color wheel. Unfortunatly, the color wheel is integrated with the light engine assembly, so the entire thing needs to be replaced. Found the part at partsstore.com for $456.00. After looking at it, I don't think it will be a big deal to replace myself, but I'm calling a local service center first to see what it will cost to have a pro come out and do it. If it is way higher, I will do it myself. I've seen other forums where people have done it themselves and it worked fine. Pretty much just have to bolt the new one in and plug it in. I'm not happy about this as my TV was purchased in Jan 2006. We do not watch TV that much, so there are not that many hours on this set. Rediculous that these are giving out so quickly and I doubt I will ever purchase a DLP set again and definetly will not consider Toshiba again. I got caught in the light bulb recall and went through 3 lights before Toshiba finally admitted there was a problem and got an improved light made. They are denying that there is any problem with the color wheels now and will not do anything about it when the set is beyond the 1 year warranty. This is not acceptable and they need to hone up to the fact they have a faulty product here. There are way too many people on the forums with this problem for it to not be a serious flaw in the product. Maybe there needs to be a class action lawsuit filed on them... seems that is the only way businesses today will do anything that's right. |
