View Full Version : Is this what a broken DLP light engine looks like?

Yesterday we turned on our Toshiba 62HM195 (2.5 year old 62" DLP), and saw that the left half of the screen has a strange color pattern but no discernable picture. The right half looks normal. Obviously the set is not usable in this state.

I am wondering what is the likely problem, and how much it would cost to fix it. Please see attached picture.

I ordered a Samsung HL61A750 to replace it. I will either sell the Toshiba on Craigslist or donate it.

Thanks in advance!

I would think a broken light engine would affect the whole screen but I really don't know much about DLPs. Circuit board problem? It looks like 1/2 of your DLP chip is not receiving any signal.

Hope you have an extended warranty.

I don't think so... That looks like a digital issue near the end of the line to the output to the actual display chips to me.

Thanks for the replies. I do not have an extended warranty.

I guess I will try calling a repair shop and see what they say. My experience calling these guys in the past is that they aren't very helpful on the phone - I will have to spend $100 to have somebody come out - and even then they probably won't be able to diagnose it on the spot.

I was hoping someone on the forum could look at the picture and have a pretty solid idea what is causing this. It was worth a shot.

does it do it all the time/constantly, or does turning it on and off reset the picture?

hmmmm, does it happen from all sources?

happens, all the time, with all sources. I have unplugged power from the wall socket to reset the TV and same issue. When I switch sources, there is a delay where the screen goes full black (this is normal), then the distortion comes back on the left side of the screen.

Thanks for any thoughts/ideas.

Does the menu show up on the bad side?

>>Does the menu show up on the bad side?

Very good question. Answer is no - nothing will ever show up on the bad side, including all of the onscreen menus. The only time the left side of the screen is not corrupt is during the time when switching sources (the screen goes fully black then). The corruption is always the same constant pattern. The corruption pattern does seem to lighten/darken a bit with what is happening on the right side of the screen, but maybe that's my eyes playing tricks on me, I'm not sure.

Here are a few more pictures.

I have the same problem but on the bottom half of my screen. Very similar looking.
I have also been told by a TV Repair person that took it to the shop that it is a bad light
engine (not the lamp which many people confuse). He didn't know what it was until he
talked to Toshiba and that took a week. I have been waiting for weeks for the part that I ordered from the repair shop for $650. Supposedly it is on Factory Backorder. Out of frustration today I found the part on line Partstore.com Toshiba/23405481 and I found someone on Fixya that replaced it successfully so I plan to cancel my order tomorrow, can get back my set and order the part from Partstore. I love the picture quality of this set when it is working but Toshiba service has been as bad as I have ever experienced. If you want to contact me on this send me an email kevinmon@mac.com
