View Full Version : Which one of these 2 Subs would you buy?
Boogie7910 05-05-08, 05:55 AM I'm looking for a $100 Sub for listening to music at work on a 2 speaker stereo setup. Came accross these two on Amazon.com.
Sony SA-W2500 Performance Line 100 Watt Subwoofer
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SA-W2500-Performance-Line-Subwoofer/dp/B000OL3QTW
or
Onkyo SKW-204 Powered Subwoofer
http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-204-SKW-204-Powered-Subwoofer/dp/B000HMLP5A
I work in a warehouse so I plan on getting full use out of it at loud volumes.
Which one would you go with?
Edit: Links fixed
danothemanoisgoo 05-05-08, 07:42 AM Neither of your links work.

do they work now?
Of those two choices I would pick the Onkyo as I don't trust Sony.
;)
Neither try this one: http://tweakcityaudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12 first shipments in ?June?.
Jakeman02 05-05-08, 09:29 AM Neither of those, If you can wait the link SRR gave is going to be an excellent sub at it's price point. If you don't want to wait and/or want to get closer to the price of one of your 2 choices the Velodyne VX-10 would be the way to go imo.

NewOrlnsDukie 05-05-08, 06:05 PM I still have that Onkyo sub as a leftover from an onkyo HTIB (that is, it looks just like that and is also a 230W sub).
I don't need it anymore. Would I recommend it? Uhh, relative to good subs -- not really. Relative to other subs that are part of HTiB systems? I guess. Then again, I don't trust Sony subs in any way, shape, or form anyway.
But I've replaced my old HTiB subs with very powerful new ones.
If you want my old one, I guess you could make an offer on it. It still is in good working order.
NewOrlnsDukie 05-05-08, 06:14 PM Needless to say, I'm not exactly a salesman. :D
Jakeman02 05-05-08, 06:42 PM NOD, put it on ebay, that's what I did when I upgraded, I was suprised by what it went for.
Boogie7910 05-06-08, 12:39 AM Thanks for the help. I wasn't looking to spend more than $100. But If they sell the Scamp sub on Amazon, I have a $50 off coupon code to use.
Will this be for sell in June for sure?
mojomike 05-06-08, 12:59 AM Unfortunately, I wouldn't count on the Scamp realistically until Labor Day according to the latest word.

Scamp will be Internet Direct, not through channels like Amazon, Best Buy, etc. You get much more for your money buying ID.
zworykin 05-06-08, 02:37 AM I've used a similar Sony in my living room as a temporary solution. I didn't think it was all that bad. No, it didn't get down to 20hz and shake the walls, but it got down to somewhere in the 30-32 region without getting too boomy. It was, however, slightly larger than this one, so you probably won't get quite as much out of this one. Still, if you're on a very tight budget, need something now and aren't looking to use it for critical listening, I think it would probably work out alright.
That being said, I'm also a big fan of Onkyo and while I haven't heard the subwoofer in question, I expect it would probably work out just as well.
And for final, full disclosure, I will have at least one of those Scamp-10's in my apartment as soon as craig gets his butt in gear and starts shipping them. ;)
Boogie7910 05-06-08, 07:57 AM This is just for work. I don't want to spend more than a $100 and even that is pushing it. I have a SVS PB10-NSD for my home personal use. So I guess I couldn't go wrong with either of the 2 I posted?
Jakeman02 05-06-08, 08:49 AM The Energy Act Sub is just < $100 and would also be a much better choice, not up to the scamp level or even the VX-10 as far as output but since you're maxed out at $100 I don't think you'll find a better choice.

$100 is so little to work with... you should definitely look into Craigslist or forum classifieds in your area.
I see ~$100 subs all the time, 10-12" Daytons, older JBL's, stuff like that. I just sold a SW-15 for $95, for example, and it took quite awhile to find a buyer.

This is your best route to find anything reasonable for $100. And anything you find used like this will be better than either of the ones you suggested in the OP.
