You guys have always helped me make decisions-- time for one more.

Currently, I have a Samsung HLT6187S that I LOVE. I just think that in my condo, I may be better off with a flat panel on the TV... that 12" depth coming out of my wall unit takes up some needed space. So, if and when I decide to get rid of this animal... where do I go? I researched DLPs for weeks before I pulled the trigger on that one... so let the research begin again.

I need a flat panel approx. 50" in width... and I'll be using it for TV and all kinda of Gaming.

LCD or Plasma for Gaming? Whats the consensus... I know it's a raging debate... but where do you guys stand?

Do I ditch the DLP? I love it, but I think it's a tad large for the space... so I guess you guys can't help me with that one.

Your thoughts?

The Panasonics are probably the most IR-resistant of all the brands. Lots of gamers seem to really like the way their games look and perform on the 1080p Pannys.

My first choice would be the TH-50PZ800U, and my 2nd choice would be the PZ85U. Both are between 49 and 50 iches wide overall. There are dedicated threads for each model on the Plasma forum.

If I were in your situation and you LOVE your DLP I'd keep it and upgrade down the road. IMO plasma has a MUCH better picture than your DLP but if you are happy with your DLP now you'd be smart to be patient and wait. Technology is really starting to take some big steps and you may see plasmas with perfect black levels next year and they may have increased brightness and power consumption as well. Not to mention prices will come down a bit. And this advice is coming from one who LOVES to upgrade :).

I hear you on this XB- and I got my DLP in October so Im not even itching to upgrade... my only complaint is I have a low sitting couch and the DLP on the stand is just abotu eye level, I think I'd enjoy it up about 10 more inches. Add to that, that the DLP+ Stand projects about 1 foot out from my sleek wall unit creation... Space-wise I think its wiser to have the flat screen.

My plan now is to get this riser built for the TV+Stand and see how I like the view on that. As of now I have the HLT6187S up for sale accepting reasonable offers. If I get a decent offer I may pull the trigger to pick up a plasma... if not, I'm stuck with a TV I love. win/win really...

Sigh... Decisions Decisions.

If you raise your DLP above eye level you may lose some brightness. I used to go RPTV and when I did I had them at eye level. I now did a HT room in the basement and my plasma is about 2 ft higher. It's no more easier to watch at that height then was my RPTVs. It will look a little smaller up higher though. Good luck on your choice. :)

And THAT is why I would never buy a RPTV.

Tilt your head and the image brightness changes.

It's almost that my RPTV is near below eye level The stand is low and my couch is really low. The way it sits with my living room furniture merits it getting jakked up about 10 inches. I'll see how it goes and keep you all posted.

I was scared about the field of view after the raise, but Ill never know until I do it.

For some reason, the picture on my cheopo Viore(Akai) dlp never changed much when you changed your viewing height/angle.

They offered me a huge dlp the other day at a local shop, but its picture changed too much depending on your angle. Not sure why my cheap tv is better.

We chose our dlp based on looking at it in a bright Costco warehouse. A couple of years ago when we got it, the plasmas all reflected way too much for our room. This lowly dlp had the sharpest picture.

Now I hear about deeper blacks, etc... when people are discussing the quality of the picture, but I find that most lcd and plasmas do not live up to my dlp when watching hd programming. Now if I had a video game system hooked up to any lcd like an Aquos, I'm sure the picture would be fantastic.

I've returned a Aquos and a 50" Panasonic Plasma in the last couple of days. The picture on the Aquos was not very good. In the store, they have blue-ray playing a movie like Cars to all of the Sharps, so of course it looks great there.

At the one store, the best pic was on the sony lcd's - but the feed was blueray except for one tv playing straight dvd. And that sony look really good. If the sharp had looked that good playing Lord of the Rings or watching Lost, I would have kept it.

So now I need a replacement for my dlp, and I'm having no luck as well.

The salesman think I'm crazy, but the sharpness on the recent tvs I've tried just isn't there.

Maybe I need a Pioneer.

Put that DLP on Craigslist ASAP and get you a nice flat panel. Its really a no brainer. Both PDP and LCD flat panels puts out a better picture than DLP's.

I own both technologies, Plasma and LCD. I still give the edge to Plasma for movies, but LCD's are better as multimedia displays, the top brand LCD's like Samung, Sony XBR's (I don't like the non-XBR's) and Sharp do a pretty good job in across all media, but not really exceptional in one area.

There must be something special about this Akai dlp tv. Was your DLP tv built in Japan?

No - built in China.

I think with this tv, you get a good one in 1 out of 10 times.

One bizarre issue with this tv is that during certain dark scenes, ie one of the Harry Potter movies, once in Narnia, and maybe two other movies, the tv loses its picture and you have to shut it down and restart it. Very bizarre, as it never does this during regular cable/hd - just certain dark scenes.

Would you say your tv is more bulky and deeper than others with worse viewing angles? That could explain your tv's very good viewing angles.

Flat panels will look much better in 2009. I'd wait.

And I bet 2010 will look better than 2009, and wait I think 2011 would even look even better. So you should just wait and wait and wait and wait. ;)

The Panny plasmas are nice.

In the LCD line, check out the new Toshiba 550 or 540.

Just my opinions. Although I am curious about the LaserTVs
