View Full Version : LED or Bulb???
teebone673 05-05-08, 06:10 PM Just curious after the LED DLP's have been out a while which you would buy today? I see some of the new Samsung DLP's are not LED. I was curious why they went back to bulbs. Are the Samsung LED DLP's (5087/89)really better than the new Samsungs that use bulbs?? Thanks.
golferbradbest 05-05-08, 06:20 PM LED ALL THE WAY!* It has excellent brightness now.* I* have the hl61a750 and it has too much* brightness at default level so i turn it down.

They didn't. They have offered both since LED was introduced and probably will continue to do so as long as there is a demand for bulb/color wheel sets. But if RPTV has a future I'm sure it will be with LED or laser lighting.
nickels55 05-06-08, 03:55 PM LEDS all the way. I have the 6187s and it is too bright out of the box. I wouldn't want my set to be any brighter.
Leds also have no color wheel so no rainbow effects (or much more minimal), the lifespan is supposed to be about the life of the TV, they don't dim over time like bulbs, and they also use less power.
My only concern is that in the future we find out that the lifespan isn't what we were promised. But, until a few more years have passed we'll have to take their word on it.
Are the black level's as good with the LED models compared to the bulb models?
I have a SXRD (LCOS) 55A3000 and the black levels are amazing.

So there is no rainbow for led, I hadn't heard that before, maybe I'll have to take another look at dlp. I can't stand all these small size tv's, by small I mean anything under 60".

I have seen some posts where one in a million see rainbows on the LED models. I have no idea if that is accurate, but I would suspect it would be way, way harder to see rainbows on these sets for those that see them.

FWIW, I would see rainbows on my lamp set when watching B&W programming. It was not something that bothered me though. I almost had to be looking for it. I've never seen rainbows on my LED set. Also, I much prefer the picture on my LED set than my lamp set. Colors are much more accurate, and my lamp set was noticeably dimmer after only 1 year's use.
r1dude57 05-07-08, 03:03 PM I'm not exactly sure if it's rainbows I see, but I sure do get eyestrain while watching the Sammy and Mitsu bulb based DLP sets. However, I don't have any issues with the LED sets.
cgmoore 05-08-08, 08:31 AM I've got a Samsung 5687 LED set. The color and contrast are outstanding. It is also plenty bright, even during daylight viewing. The nice thing is when you get ready to watch, you just turn it on and about 4 seconds later, it is ON, no waiting around for the bulb to get up to temp, etc.
I am hopeful the LED engines do last as long as we have been promised.
I am also curious when we are going to see these in front-projectors.
