Hello awesome forum of mass proportions!

I have a Hitachi 51F59 with a strange problem. On the left 1/3 of the screen (percentage is an approximation, of course), there is a strange horizontal ghosting, striping, banding (whatever you want to call it) issue. It's best described in the shown picture:

http://www.xourque.net/tvissue.jpg

As you can see, in the lower right there are horizontal stripes. This happens all the time. More details:

- Happens from ALL inputs:
- HDMI
- Component
- Digital TV (broadcasted HDTV)

What can I do to fix this?

have you checked this on an all white screen? what about different viewing angles. it almost looks like something is on the screen itself, you didn't get anything on it did you? only other thing i can maybe think of is something on one of the lens/crt's if you know how to take off the front you can check the crt's other then that maybe a tech on here could be more help. good luck

Hello!

The horizontal lines are dynamic - in that they are never the same and completely dependant on what is being shown on the TV. If I display a solid red, green or blue image on the screen, you can still see the horizontal lines. They aren't as obvious and picture worthy, however.

My TV has the exact same issue except I have found that it only does it when inputting a 720p signal. When I set my PS3 and Cable box to upconvert to 1080i the issue goes away. I had a tech inspect the TV and they said parts would come to about $1,800 to repair the set. I have just been dealing with it since I rarely watch a 720p source.

Could be an issue with how the power is flowing to & from the TV. A power cleaner may be needed

Hey - what parts did the repair person say needed to be replaced in order to fix this problem? Thanks so much! I will try setting the 1080i up-convert to see if that will make a difference. Displaying 1080i is soooo flickery though ;)

what is a power cleaner?

It's a device that helps clean the power from your devices when plugged into it.

Good afternoon. My name is 2 Bunny, and this is sort of my "intro post", so I apologize in advance for this being a misfiled long ("bump") post:

As of now (and for the last 25+ years), our family has owned an RCA VJM2082R Direct View CRT set, and its been starting to go. It was a universal family decision, that maybe after a quarter of a century, it may possibly be time to upgrade. Given the poor economy, we turned to our friend Craiglist where I found a Hitachi 51F59 CRT Rear Projection set with the exact symptoms described not only in the first post of this thread, but here on fixya (See "Link 1" at the bottom of the post) and also at this other site (See "Link 2" at the bottom of the post). (Craiglist photo at the bottom of my post)

I have located the Hitachi X480315 Repair kit for just over $35 shipped, and I wanted to know if the community had any input on this kind of problem beyond that of the two linked to above. If I were to go with buying the repair kit, is there instructions that come with it or documentation with the kit or on the internet anywhere (I couldn't locate any). If I were to go the route of "resolder[ing] vertical ic and heat sink grounds", is this a simple soldering task? To be completely honest, I've seen soldering done several times before, but never actually tried it myself. Does the Hitachi X480315 Repair kit require soldering of any kind? If not, is it worth it to try a first time soldering on a large (dangerous?) rear projection television?

Sorry for filling up this post with questions, but I am completely new to this "obsolete" scene, and I just wanna be able to run Wii in Progressive scan (and color - the RCA that we have doesn't always display in color), and the Xbox in its gorgeous 720p )that I have seen with its component cables on other HDTV Sets), and our other standard def hardware through the composite slots. After (if) we pick it up, I will probably be looking for some simple tweaks to make the picture look better and the like (not too hardcore, just some simple tweaks ☺).

Anyway, I guess while we're at it (I know we're not supposed to discuss prices here, but since it is broken, can we make an exception? ☺), how much would the community value an "old" CRT rear projection from 2006(ish?) with these symptoms? I don't want to overspend on what the general public and the manufacturers view as "obsolete projection technology".

Thanks so much. Here's a Craiglist photo from the listing (seems to line up exactly with the symptoms described on this thread and the two other sites I linked to):

Have you ever opened up the back of your TV and cleaned it out? Could be something on the mirrors.

Of course, easiest way to clean the inside of these sets is to take the screen off.

I haven't actually purchased it yet (just had some correspondence with the seller via email), so I can't actually look. In an email reply to me requesting dimensions, a model number, and details, it sounds like they (the lines) are flickering (not sure if that is caused by dust). Here it is in the seller's own words:

"What I'm pretty sure it needs, is to have a connection resoldered. Nothing has
actually shorted or burned out completely, just the bottom half of the screen has"
horizontal flickering lines."

I will probably want to clean the mirror and lenses(?) anyway, since I doubt the person did much maintenance for it, but do you still think it could be dust if the lines are flickering? Do you know how to open it? Is there a service manual for it (The only places I could find a service manual was places they wanted payment)? Is there any place to get instructions for the repair kit? Would it come with them? Would that be available in the Service manual?
Phew. I've got a lot to learn here apparantly ☺.

What often goes out on CRT RPTV's is the convergence IC's.

Takes some digging to get the chips, and an ability by you to be able to take out the board and do the actual work.

Then of course, performing the electronic re-convergence of the unit.

From the picture I found of what is in the kit, there is definitely some soldering involved.

There is still an open and active topic in this forum for the F59 units.

Great. I also found the service manual with a forum search. Looked all over the internet for that, but it was all here the whole time. I am having a tough time finding where in the service manual you would put the parts from that set. It is a little overwhelming, but I think I could figure it out. I did a simple text search for "vertical ic" and "heatsink ground" that they were talking about in that thread I linked to, but I came up empty handed.

Is replacing the convergence ICs the same idea as what is in the repair kit?

Thanks.

Same idea, yes. From the looks of it, one of those pieces is a heat sink. You should see the metalwork on the board you need to fix. It is on the board called 'Deflection Block Assembly' in the service manual. The large board on the bottom right from the rear of the cabinet.

You'll probably need some heatsink compound as well.

I've found the whole board assembly for around $300.00 online.

$300???
What is the likelihood that I'll have to replace that? I don't wanna spend $300 dollars on it, LOL!

Also, is heatsink compound also called "Thermal Compound"? I have a friend with some of that, and I could probably borrow it if we're talking about the same thing ☺.

Anyway, I did a text search of the service manual and couldn't find the "Deflection Block Assembly". Could you point me to a page number perhaps?

Just to keep things straight, will I most likely be needing to pick up the Hitachi Repair Kit for sure at this point?

I really can't say if this will fix your issue. Though for the price, it's a cheap fix.

All right, I Found the "Deflection Block Assembly" in the service manual on page 91 (the pages are off by one, so acrobat reader thinks it is page 92). When I crack this machine open, will this be easy to find?

Update: Hurrah, I think I might have found it in the disassembly instructions part of the service manual. Is it on page 111 (Page 112 from the perspective of Acrobat Reader) or page 112 (Page 113 from the perspective of Acrobat reader) perhaps? If so, does that whole big thing have to come out like illustrated on page 110 (or what acrobat reader thinks is page 111)? If so, do I have to take #4 out of the big thing as illustrated on page 111?
When (if) I get the repair kit, do you think that might come with instructions, or will I have to improvise? Are they just replacement parts for what is already there that I can easily pick out on the board if there were no instructions?

Update 2: Found more documentation. I think this cements that this is probably the problem: http://www.fixya.com/support/t371452-line_paring (Don't ask me how I missed this before while surfing every FixYa Problem on this thing.

While we're at it (and I know we're not really supposed to talk price here, but I've really got to know if this is worth it), does it have any value at all the way it is? I've got nothing to compare it to.

Thanks.
