my samsung upscalling dvd player is supposed to upscale to 1080p but when conencted to my 1080p samsung tv, it is coming up as 480.

I cannot figure out how to change it, but it is connected via RCA cables do I need to go buy hdmi cables to get it to do the upconverting?

Thanks!

As he said, Yes.

Composite and s-video are limited to 480i. Component can carry HD signals, but this is not allowed for SD-DVD upconversion for reasons of Digital Rights Management.

HDMI is what you need. Forum sponsors http://www.monoprice.com/ and http://www.bluejeanscable.com/ are good, economical sources.

On some units there have been Firmware hacks that allow upscaling over component.

Just google for discussion on other forums.

On some units there have been Firmware hacks that allow upscaling over component. Why would you do a Firmware hack for upscaling over component when you can use HDMI?? He has a 1080p samsung tv. It has HDMI inputs.

Yes- even if you do a firmware hack, to upconvert through component, you will still be limited to 1080i. If you have HDMI input you should utilize it as it will give you the best picture possible.

Use HDMI and don't get suckered into buying an expensive cable.

I just received my .09 cent 6ft HDMI cables from Amazon and they work great.

.18 cents for two...shipping is the killer ($9.00). Still $4.50 a cable is not too shabby.

You must use an HDMI cable to get 1080p from your player and you need to make sure you have set it to 1080p too!

guys I have gotten an hdmi cable and it is upscaling, but my wide screen movies (which I would expect to upscale even better) are upscaling to extra wide screen and still having the black bars on top and bottom of the screen. Is there any way to fix this? whenever I set my tv to 16:9 or "Just scan" it appears as extra-wide-screen, but any other methods cut out portions(the sides) of the video. ...I would think that a 16:9 movie would fit nicely and exactly into a 16:9 TV....this is upstetting bc for years I have been buying widescreen movies because I knew I would someday get a widescreen tv, and now it appears the full screen dvds upscale better :(....Sorry ro ramble on....hopefully someone knows of a fix?

Thanks.

Are you sure you're not just watching Cinemascope movies? Cinemascope is approximately a 2.4-to-1 aspect ratio, compared to your TV's 1.78-to-1. Thus 'Scope films will always have black bars, unless you stretch or zoom them away.

Examples of Cinemascope films (or "super widescreen") would be all six Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Incredibles, Spider-Man 2 and 3, etc.

The aspect ratio varies from film to film. Some are 1.85:1 while others are 2.35:1
Those that are 2.35:1 will leave black bars on the top and bottom. You can try various settings on your player and TV to get what you like best. A 16:9 movie would fit exactly into a 16:9 TV but most movies are not 16:9(1.78:1).
