View Full Version : Resistance 2
All signed up...now, if they will just pick me :). I can't freak'n wait for this to come out.
I'm waaaaay excited for this game to come out, too! My only advice....get back on to RFoM every so often, so you don't get demolished when you get online. If you haven't played it in a while, it's a little daunting. It really takes some time to get used to the feel of the game again. Personally, coming from COD4, it's so strange just to have to take so many shots to kill someone. Your aim really has to be consistent! And that only comes with practice.
The new splicer weapons sounds awesome. Not too sure about the Berserk perks, though. Invisibility? X-Ray vision? Hm, the Resistance die-hards demolish me fast enough as it is. The last thing I need to worry about is them coming at me invisible! :p
I'll take the X-Ray vision, though. Too bad there's not going to be female skins in the game.

I actually fired it back up a couple of weeks ago just to help get in the mood ...I'm on my third time playing through (super human???) and about halfway through (all this before warhawk entered my life). We should fire up a "retro-resistance" night sometime soon in honor of R2 coming out

Sounds good! And yeah, I meant online, when it comes to difficulty. The campaign is a lot more forgiving. Last week I jumped back into a few custom games (non one-hit kill) and the competition is particularly TOUGH these days. Well, I suppose it never helps when you're pushing the jump button when you want to throw a grenade. :o It's maybe a little hard to believe, but there are a lot of guys who haven't stopped playing since Resistance came out! (And for some reason I always run into them in games!!)
But I'd be great to get online with you sometime. And get a bunch of guys together. (The Resistance2 team!) Somerset 8p was always my favourite place to hang out. It's weird going back to the maps after "all this time". Everything's exactly the same! Yeah, of course it should be, but you kinda feel like the maps should weather with time, or something....a fallen tree, here or there....or one of the car fires to have finally burned itself out! But it's all just so perfectly preserved. Kinda spooky, in a way. At least to my weird brain, anyway! :p

I would be interested in playing with you all, so please post up a message if you decide to do so. I am more into the one-hit kills, but will play whatever interests you all.
MIAaron 09-10-08, 11:19 AM From the sound of it, R2 is quite different from R1. I'm really hoping they didn't ruin it. I still think R1 has the best multiplayer of any other ps3 game. I just jumped on last night for the first in a while and I was still in my clan. It didn't take much to get back into the flow and kick arse. :)
Mw182006 09-10-08, 11:51 AM I'm also interested in playing, just got it and working on my first play through. Played online a bit and had fun.

Malcolm_B 09-10-08, 12:21 PM Used to play the heck out of the multi-player on Resistance and had a blast, but haven't got on recently. All this talk makes me want to give it a shot again.
All signed up. Those pics look awesome. I am so exicted for this game, the first one really left an impression on me.
Guinn3sS 09-10-08, 01:28 PM Is anyone in the online beta? Or is it even out yet? This article says it is....

I might buy Core to give this a try.
KingShorty 09-10-08, 01:33 PM I know a few people from another forum that have rec'd beta invites today.
Check your emails, you might be lucky enough to get into the expanding private beta.

So if I buy Qore, do I automatically get in to the beta?
KingShorty 09-10-08, 02:45 PM So if I buy Qore, do I automatically get in to the beta?
I have no idea. I would guess that it's the same as the SOCOM beta requirement wherein those that pre-order get first shot and Qore subscribers a week later.
But nothing has been said, that's just mere speculation on my part.
Conspiracy* 09-10-08, 03:00 PM I'll never play another game of COD4 when R2 comes out. I havent played RFOM in like 8 months, I hope they didnt tweak it too much, I pretty much used to pwn!
KingShorty 09-10-08, 03:24 PM I know there are a few guys on here that are thinking of doing a R:FOM multiplayer before R2 comes out.
DubBucket 09-10-08, 06:44 PM I know there are a few guys on here that are thinking of doing a R:FOM multiplayer before R2 comes out.
Did you get that idea from the posts on this page that suggest exactly that.. or did you come up with it all by yourself? :p
KingShorty 09-10-08, 07:25 PM Neither.
Dogdoctor, myself and Kekborg had a talk about it on the PSN a few weeks ago.
slowfaller 09-11-08, 03:27 AM Unfourtunatly I find myself firing up COD4 instead of R2 after having it for a couple of weeks. The assault on my senses COD4 gives me is more satisfying

Hook me up with R2 then ;)
gabrielh1979 09-11-08, 01:07 PM When R2 comes out, it will finally be time for me to put Warhawk down (been playing it every single weeks since the Beta in may 2007)
slowfaller 09-12-08, 12:07 AM Hook me up with R2 then ;)
If it was like the warhawk beta I would but my clan mates/myres mods say it doesn't work. I actually got it early (with insomniac permission) by sharing from one of my clan mates and then it did stop working. Finally they hooked it up where a code was emailed to me during the 2nd wave of the private beta invites.
Slacker George 09-12-08, 09:51 PM Ted Price Q&A on Resistance 2. Sounds like it'll be an impressive leap over R1.
http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/resistance2/news.html?sid=6197590&page=1
GameSpot: Where are you currently in development? What's done? What's left?
Ted Price: The game is just about finished as I write this. Yet the three to four weeks before we deliver a final disc to the factory are always the most difficult. This is when we're fixing bugs, adding tons of polish, making tuning tweaks, and trying to keep our builds stable for the testing team. What's great is that all of our features are in, and the game is looking, sounding, and playing fantastic. Resistance 2 has become everything we hoped it would be.
GS: Tell us a little bit about the splicer, which was revealed at Leipzig? When would players possibly want to use it?
TP: The splicer is an SPRA (Special Projects Research Administration) weapon. Like many of the SRPA weapons in the game, it was created using repurposed tech.
For the splicer specifically, SPRA began experimenting with the portable saws used in conversion camp rescue ops. The splicer uses electromagnets to accelerate the blades and then releases them with devastating consequences. When one of these blades hits an enemy, it will hit, bounce off, and return to the enemy, doing even more damage. Sometimes, particularly when used against "grims," the blades will remove heads and limbs.
Like all weapons in Resistance 2, the splicer has a couple of very different applications. While the primary fire is great for dealing with hordes, the secondary fire charges up a blade until it glows red-hot and then launches it. When it strikes an enemy, the blade lodges in the enemy's hide and continues to spin--spewing out pieces of flesh. This secondary ability is great for use against larger enemies. For example, taking down a titan is far easier when you can have several saw blades stuck into his body, churning away and doing damage over time.
We also had to develop much faster AI and navigation routines to support lots and lots of enemies in complex environments. And these had to be enemies who weren't just standing there and firing. The enemies communicate with each other, they react to the players' actions, and they can handle making their way through often cluttered environments without getting stuck. As a result, the routines they use are sophisticated but expensive in terms of processor time. These routines have to be heavily optimized and rewritten to run on the PlayStation 3's SPUs. This optimization opens up many, many options for us in terms of designing very big and dynamic battles.
The good part...
GS: You guys are a third-generation PS3 developer--how has that experience benefited you with R2?
TP: At this point, we feel very comfortable with the PS3, especially since Resistance 2 is our fourth PS3 title. One benefit of developing for a sole platform is that we've been singularly focused on pushing the PS3 harder and harder. And as a result, each game we release shows significant improvements over its predecessors.
During the last three or four years, we've been continuously improving our engine, our in-game systems, and our tools. The returns we've seen from these efforts include many behind-the-scenes improvements that enable us to support a better game experience. For example our "hidden" tech improvements result in more enemies running better AI routines, larger and more detailed environments, seamless loading between levels, more believable atmospheric effects--the list goes on and on.
And, then, there are the really cool tech improvements that everyone should notice right away. Two of my favorites are a) the vastly improved shaders on both characters and environment objects and b) our revamped lighting system, which uses a combination of dynamic and baked lighting to create more vibrant environments. As a result, the game looks very different from Resistance: Fall of Man.
But one improvement I think everyone will notice is our new water. It's refractive, reflective, and can be tuned to create anything from muddy swamp water to a crystal clear Caribbean shoreline. It's fully interactive--meaning characters create very believable ripples and waves as they move around in it.
One of my favorite moments in the game takes place in a flooded area of Twin Falls, Idaho, where around 20 submerged leapers rush the player. All of the leapers are creating ripples, which interact with each other, something that's incredibly hard to program, especially if you want the game to run fast. It's also easy to get distracted by how cool the water looks while you're getting chewed up by the leapers.
We're extremely happy with where R2 is overall. That said, we're confident we'll continue to wring even more out of the PS3 over the next few years.

Chief Ediri 09-13-08, 12:57 AM Has anyone received a beta email yet?
William Mapstone 09-13-08, 09:09 AM I keep asking my local Gamestop about getting in on the beta by pre-ordering the game with them, but they don't seem to know anything about it. Has that happened yet at the Gamestops? I am ready to give them my money.....

Nope. As of right now, it's invite only from myresistancebeta.net.
William Mapstone 09-13-08, 10:43 AM thx shorty, I was wondering if my local gamestop was clueless... I did sign up at myresistancebeta.net, I was just covering my bases as I really, really want to be in this beta.:)
GulfWarVet 09-13-08, 11:39 AM I have received my Code from gamestop even though I live in the UK!! Entered the details on betamyresistance so will see if SCEA pick up on it or not and still send the beta code.
It arrived around 4 days after I pre-ordered the CE.
You won't get the Sony email I reckon until 2-3 days before the beta is due to start.

Pester If I see you on I'll join in and have a chat;)
So far the US can get in by Pre-order of the game at Gamestop, online is probably a better bet of getting the code sent through.
Buying issue3 or annual subscription to Qore or taking a chance along with the rest of the world by signing up at betamyresistance.net.
No news yet on the EU/rest of the world or Canada for that matter as far as I can see for region specific or retailer tie ins.
headcase151 09-15-08, 05:10 AM When you preorder, make sure you give them you E-mail address. They didn`t askfor mine. Now they are giving me the run around.Just a heads up.
Decapitation and lossing limbs!?!?! This game just gets better and better. I am looking forward to mowing down a hoard of those zombie looking chimera.
Guinn3sS 09-15-08, 12:23 PM I thought purchasing Qore (September) will get you into the beta... Is that not true? Or is it a later part of the beta testing?

You get in later than those who pre-order or have an annual subscription to Qore. I pre-ordered thru gamestop and had the required emails later in the day to sign up for the beta.

Well, I reserved my copy at GameStop today.
Let's see if they do send out emails for the BETA.
Ratnose86 09-16-08, 10:25 PM About halfway through my refresher playthrough of Resistance. Wow, this was a launch title?? Still feels great and the suspense is still there. I am still not a big fan of the online though and I hope it is more to my liking in Resistance 2. Actually I just remember there being somewhat of a learning curve and I must have forgotten everything by now.
dogdoctor 09-16-08, 11:26 PM Well, I reserved my copy at GameStop today.
Let's see if they do send out emails for the BETA.Are you getting the basic game or the extreme bundle. ;) I'm just going to get the basic. Do you have a PSP. Apparently there is a PSP Resistance game (I forget the title) that is a bridge the gap kind of story between R1 and R2. I don't have a PSP, just thought I would toss that out there.

I'm getting the basic. I'm done buying Collector's Edition stuff unless it comes with stuff that's worth keeping (like the GTAIV C.E.)
I have a PSP, but I'll wait for the game to be available online and then I'll download it since I've installed Custom Firmware on mine.
Slacker George 09-18-08, 09:13 PM New video. Pre-rendered but done in the game engine from what I understand.

phipp01 09-19-08, 08:45 AM Well just got an email from Gamestop saying the beta will NOT start on Oct. 6th like it was originally slated to start. It just says the makers are still saying early Oct. but not the 6th.
Chief Ediri 09-19-08, 09:56 AM I want to buy the LE just for the cover, but whatever comes pack in the game isn't worth the extra 20 dollars.
I want to buy the LE just for the cover, but whatever comes pack in the game isn't worth the extra 20 dollars.
You think? Looking over everything that comes with the LE, it seems stuffed with extras, one of the few LE's that actually seem worth the extra $$$.
KingShorty 09-19-08, 03:09 PM This games LE is worth the money.
Comes with a statuette and a replica gun (mini of course). Lots of art work. Possible soundtrack. Blu-ray documentary and much more.
headcase151 09-20-08, 12:58 AM I got a call from Gamestop tonight. They had a beta card for my Resistance 2 preorder.I`ll pick it up in the morning.

If this is holographic, I will just skip the LE. I don't care about the doc videos or the artwork. The figure I would like, but if it had "action" capabilities, then I would mind putting the extra money.
ddanont 09-20-08, 03:16 AM Did anyone see actual gameplay footage in person, during the recent Games Convention in Leipzig perhaps? If so, does it look like the terrific new "in game footage" released today? It's looking simply amazing, so I'm hoping that kind of graphics carries into the actual game play (should be possible by now). IF that's the case, then Killzone 2 has serious graphics competition.
GulfWarVet 09-20-08, 04:08 AM Just be grateful you can get the CE. SCEE isn't doing it for us lot!!
I'm having to import and its nearly $100 for me:eek:
Is it worth it, damn right. Can't wait.:):D

geez buddy.
If it's costing you that much, why not purchase the game online and I can give you my mailing address. Once I get it I can mail it to you and hopefully that'll save you more than having to pay the shipping via the company website.
I've done this with another friend that I have in the UK and it saves him money.
Then you can just pay me back via PAYPAL.

Let me get this straight, you guys are pre-ordering the Beta version? I have never played a beta, I assume it will have some "issues" that they later resolve with the real release, right?
When does the non-beta come out?

Actually, that's not correct, either. The private R2 beta is now finished. Monday was the last day. If you pre-order R2 now, you will get a code to download the PUBLIC beta which will begin in early October. Qore Issue 3 purchasers will get into the public beta in the middle of October.
Hope this clears things up.

jayoldschool 09-22-08, 05:25 PM Just got in from my local Game Stop and EB Games (the places that are supposed to handle beta pre-orders in Canada). Both managers had heard nothing about the beta. They both checked their corporate emails, and had no luck there either.
Anyone in Canada get a public beta code? If so, how did you get it?

I'm in. I don't play that stupid warhawk game and can't believe anybody would waste their time with it
Let me know when you guys are playing. I just repurchased R1 last Friday. And I made roughly $5 on the transaction since I traded it back in to gamestop like 16 months ago. I've got money to spend!

Brandon, what is this warhawk game you speak of ...is it any fun?
KingShorty 09-22-08, 06:04 PM You had a blast, literally. Boy were we both rusty. You more so than I for some reason. I pre-ordered mine today. Got the beta card.
For you King - I pre-ordered: R2, SOCOM, LBP - gut my card for a free Kratos skin too.
That's weird. When I pre-ordered mine, they didn't give me anything.
Edit:
Just called them and they said that they have one waiting for me.
dogdoctor, you missed out on one game. Buzz Quiz TV. I was trying to tell you about that one last night but I guess the mic cut out before you got that. It's coming out tomorrow and it's got really good ratings and tonnes of really good stuff.

kekborg 09-23-08, 08:50 AM Ok, so four of us fired the mp last night on r1 (Doc, King...where were you guys ). Took some getting used to after not playing for so long but brought back some fond memories :)
Question as I did not play a lot of mp back in the days on this (played through the campaign 2 1/2 times though :D)...can you set up a map rotation or is it just one map at a time and then you have to start a new game . For the life of me, I could not figure out how to get more then one map in a rotation...:o

Well done young man...well done :D (I LOL'd and LOI'd)
I couldn't get into the 1st one, but I'm still playing through it for the story. The guns kill it for me. Bullets on most guns come super slow that you can almost run circles around their flight. It's decent for an FPS. I doubt I'll be getting RFOM2 unless I scoop it up for the cheap
Aletuner 09-23-08, 08:59 AM Brandon, what is this warhawk game you speak of ...is it any fun?
Meh... I tried it... it was ok for the single player campaign but the online multi-player is waaaaaaay over rated.

Besides that's one of aspect of Resistance I really like. Each projectile feels like a real physical thing, gives the gunplay more impact IMO.
There's supposed to be a bunch of hot new media coming out today. Maybe it'll change your mind about R2. Or not. :)
EDIT:
Oh, and a Spoiler Warning from Insomniac's community manager. Some of the gameplay videos coming out today could be almost complete play-throughs of some of the games early levels.

Indeed. I forgot how great--and balanced--the weapons are. Last night I remembered that the bullseye is still my favorite :)
I actually underrated this FPS the first go-round.

resistance 2 hands-on
the chimera attack and we take up arms against them.
By jeff haynes
september 23, 2008 - if you own a ps3, you most likely have experienced one of the best titles for the system: A war epic where mankind didn't fight the second world war, but instead fought for their survival against a daunting alien menace. Resistance introduced the chimera, a mysterious alien race that decimated the human resistance of europe and almost devastated great britain were it not for the combined actions of uk and american soldiers. But just like any great villain, the chimera won't be eliminated so easily, and have regrouped to launch an assault on the defenseless shores of north america. The only man that can stop them is the hero of the first game, nathan hale, but as we've seen in images and videos released so far, even that looks like quite a daunting task. A few days ago, myself and a few other journalists were given the opportunity to check out an almost finished build of the game to see what hale's fight on american soil would be like when it's released on november 4.
Taking place two years after the events of the first game, resistance 2 picks up immediately where the first title left off and will focus once again on the actions of nathan hale fighting against the chimera. Hale joins a group of super soldiers known as the sentinels, powerful warriors who seem to have the same immunity to the chimeran disease as he does. However, if you were hoping that rachel parker would be returning to narrate the story and what happens to his newly found allies, you're out of luck. This story is solely from hale's perspective and develops through a series of in-game briefings, cutscenes and collected intel to establish the story as it unfolds before hale's eyes. The result is a narrative that is designed to draw the player into both the larger than life scale of the attacks on america and the grand scale of the monsters themselves.
The first opportunity that we had to experience this was in the tutorial mission, which is designed to "ease" you into the gameplay by throwing you directly into the midst of battle. This level is set in iceland, where the sentinels have set up a base to watch over the threat that could expand from europe at any time. Unfortunately for them, the chimera launch a surprise attack upon the base, forcing hale's squad to attempt to save the remaining soldiers and repel the hordes. This is much easier said than done, because leading the strike is a gigantic half-chimeran/half-metallic creature known as a goliath. Packing machine gun turrets, rocket launchers and gigantic claws, the goliath is an extremely dangerous monster to battle out in the open. Couple this with new chimeran flood tactics, and you can only imagine just how easily overrun this base, and defenseless towns must be.
Lucklily for you, you won't have to take this monster on by yourself; you'll have some help from a fellow squad member who will give you tips on how to play and where to aim to inflict the most damage, such as taking out the enormous monster's power coils with a laark rocket. Although you'll discover familiar weapons like the aforementioned rocket launcher, new firearms will also be introduced, such as the new magnum, which fires extremely powerful rounds that can take out most enemies. These rounds have a secondary benefit in that you can pull the secondary fire button and detonate any round fired into a chimera, causing radial damage to nearby threats. You'll also find that a number of the older weapons have received a facelift in how they work, such as bullseye tags that make the targeted creature glow as you blast away at it from safety.

"safety" in many ways feels like a relative term, because you really get a sense that monsters are constantly coming at you from all sides. In fact, ted price, president of insomniac, specifically mentioned that the development team wanted to provide a sense that you can be attacked at any time. This was particularly true within the orick, california level, a stage that was only recently revealed a few days ago on our site. Set about three levels into the game, the setting of the level was placed immediately after hale and his squad of sentinels had managed to somehow take down one of the gigantic capital ships that we've seen in previously released trailers. The gameplay picked up immediately after hale and his convoy of sentinels are ambushed in the redwood forest by a large force of monsters. While taking out chimera that rushed the injured and confused was nothing new, and sniping chimera up on a ridge was somewhat familiar, this comfort level was immediately removed as we attempted to regroup with our squad and ran into a new enemy known as the chameleon.
Resembling the predator from the movies, complete with cloaking abilities, the chameleon ran through our ranks, picking off and eviscerating npcs one by one until we were alone. While it was somewhat tricky to pick them up from a distance, the shimmer of the creature before they attacked was the only clue that i and others were given before they were charged and cut to pieces, forcing a reload. However, once all of us got used to seeing these creatures, we knew exactly how to approach and eliminate them safely. Reassessing our tactics quickly became a vital survival skill, because while we could charge ahead and blast our way through drones floating overhead or other creatures, such as the augur-wielding monsters from the first game, would erect large energy shields and use them to charge forward and smash us.
These weren't the only augur-wielding enemies that we had to worry about, because the chimera had set large computerized turrets in the motor lodges of the small californian town that had been infested with chimera. These turrets rapid fired augur bolts at anything that moved, and quickly honed in on your location. Impervious to damage, the only weakness to the machines was by using your cover and getting around to the rear of the machine, where you could eventually turn it off. However, even using cover was somewhat of a daunting prospect at first glance, because some of the walls, barricades and other structures had been covered with flesh-like pods that pulsed and shivered as we approached them. While it wasn't apparent whether or not the creatures inside were threats that would attack, it did seem as though the things inside were the remains of the unfortunate humans that were captured and converted by the chimera on the spot, which was a rather unpleasant thought to move past as we blasted our way to the end of the level.

while the playthrough of the two single-player levels was awesome, checking out the co-op mode was just as cool. After receiving a large amount of comments in their forums regarding the lack of co-op in the first title, the team decided to implement the mode in resistance 2, providing up to eight player co-op with three primary features as the key to its success. The first element was keeping the scale of the battles and monsters exactly the same as it would be in the single player experience, so players will face off against the same giant creatures that i previously mentioned in the single player campaign as well as many smaller chimera. Additionally, the game will intentionally scale the size of the encounters to match the number of players in the co-op game at one time, so if you go in with one friend, you'll probably face off against individual large chimera that are tricky to defeat, but possible with some skill. On the other hand, if you move into battle with the full compliment of eight soldiers, insomniac plans on having up to 100 enemies on screen at once swarming and attacking you. All of these enemies can be of different sizes and shapes, giving your squad a significant challenge.
The second element the development team wanted to work on was the story elements, which run parallel to the single-player story of resistance 2. The players in the co-op game are part of a separate squad of sentinels dispatched behind enemy lines to track down and steal special chimera equipment known as gray tech. Finding these items within the game will change as you move through each location, performing tasks like powering down chimeran spires and machines before you move toward your eventual "end zone" with your final objective. However, progress within the co-op mode won't be a linear affair; the development team went out of their way to make sure that the playing paths were constantly randomized so stages didn't look the same from play to play. What's more, the story of the co-op mode will branch in many different directions, allowing players to determine their own squad's tale against the chimeran threat.
http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/912/912569/resistance-2-20080923001909129-000.jpg
the final element the team focused on was breaking out character classes for players to specialize in and use within the game. Three separate classes will be included in the co-op game, each with their own separate abilities: Soldiers are the tanks of the group, with more health than any other class and the power to deploy energy shields to soak up damage. Spec ops are the power of the squad, inflicting more damage than anyone else and replenishing the ammo of everyone's weapons. Medics are obviously support, but have weapons that leech the health of enemies and convert it into healing power for your squad. Medics can also revive fallen soldiers much faster than anyone else, which is important because there is no health regeneration in this mode (plus, while anyone can revive someone in battle, the medics are much better at it). While players initially choose what class they want to be, they're not locked down in that position for the rest of the round. In fact, you're given the opportunity to switch back and forth between any one of the classes, gaining experience and leveling up your troops based on the actions you perform.
Obviously, the easiest way to gain experience is by killing chimera and accomplishing your objectives, but the insomniac guys wanted to also provide bonuses for players that work as a team. For example, medics that focus on healing players or soldiers that constantly erect shields receive bonuses for performing their class-specific duties. Experience is important because not only will it level up your soldiers, allowing them access to new weapons and gear, but it will power special powers known as berserks. Berserks are incredible skills that can turn the tide of a battle, strengthening your squad with supernatural abilities. The medic, for example, can generate a regenerative area of effect around them, healing any team member nearby, while spec ops will provide ammunition that is much stronger than before and soldiers will create stronger shields. By defeating enemies, the experience goes into a berserk meter, and once it's full, players are able to trigger their particular skill, with the draining meter dictating the duration of the ability itself.
If you were looking for fast and furious gameplay, it's definitely found here, as i dropped into a battlefield with three medics, three soldiers and two spec ops. Playing as a medic was an interesting experience, as you drained enemies with your phoenix energy gun with primary fire and redistributed that health with secondary fire to your allies. It didn't feel like a tame support role as it can sometimes be in other titles, as you'll be able to weaken the enemies for your allies to take out, and even kill some outright if they've been heavily injured with consistent draining. However, the game definitely tossed a large handful of chimera at us, including numerous rocket launching creatures known as titans at checkpoints known as nodes.
These "node bosses" tried to defend their "bases" as best they could, which would force us to re-examine how we'd approach a location, even establishing choke points to strip away the weaker chimera to leave the stronger one isolated and exposed. However, our squad also noted that the chimera would try to do the exact same tactics to us, which made battles against three dozen or more monsters a heated and tense exchange of fire. Even more challenging was the fact that not all of the creatures were the same; some of them had one or more stars above their heads, indicating that they were elites and much stronger than typical chimera. Not only did those become a priority to eliminate quickly before they could inflict damage, but they also provided more experience for the squad as a whole, boosting our levels accordingly.
http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/912/912569/resistance-2-20080923001915941-000.jpg
there's one other thing that i want to note regarding the experience collection, which is that ted price pointed out that the points, ribbons and medals collected in co-op will carry over to the other modes as well, meaning that you can get to a certain point in co-op and notice that you've unlocked a new weapon in the single player campaign, or that your multiplayer soldiers are stronger.
Speaking of multiplayer, the battlefield was extremely pitched, with the 60 player battles raging across the various maps that we played on. Even with watching about two or three rounds and playing a few myself, i was struck by the fact that it didn't seem as though i was watching the same location twice. I was informed that combined across the traditional multiplayer modes (like deathmatch) and the squad-based skirmish mode, there will be more than 70 maps for players to fight across, which could be one of the largest multiplayer experiences ever made.
Considering that scale, it's no wonder that the skirmish mode splits players into five man squads and delivers objectives to them as the battle rages on. While you'll sometimes gain the exact same goal as that of another squad on your side, you'll always have a sense of what you need to do and where you'll need to go, primarily because those objectives seemed to reflect the conditions on the battlefield. For example, pushing forward as a squad, my team captured an objective just before the enemy arrived, but were quickly forced to defend the checkpoint from incoming attacks for a period of time. Fortunately, we were able to use a number of berserks to improve our damage and our speed to help us in the repelling of our opponents.
The use of these abilities turned the tide of the battle, although we found that players were easily able to combine these skills with different weapons to create some deadly combinations for their side. One of those included using the expanded size of the augur shield to protect their squad along with the healing ring effect to turtle at a base, while another was using the invisibility berserk along with the new saw blade weapon known as the splicer to become a deadly assassin.
http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/912/912569/resistance-2-20080923001912472-000.jpg
although i only had a few hours to play all three modes and check out resistance 2, it struck me as phenomenally deep -- much more than we'd ever expected. Essentially three full games in one cohesive blu-ray package, resistance 2 could easily be one of the largest games of the year and definitely in contention for game of the year honors when it is released at the beginning of november.

Thanks. Looks like it will be pretty fun.
bplewis24 09-23-08, 04:31 PM First impressions from those vids:
1) I'm pleased with the grahpical improvements made to even recent builds of the game, which are leaps above R1.
2) There is so much going on and, as expected, things appear smooth in terms of framerate, etc.
3) The co-op has me excited. It's what I care most about (2nd being single-player campaign and third being online multiplayer). The guys in that first co-op vid seemed a bit bunched together, but I'm hoping the ability to spread out and use a tactical approach will yield some improved efficiency in gameplay.

Well, I'm not sure, but I thought the open beta is only for Multiplayer.
So if it's only mp, then I don't mind playing it all the way. I'm saving the co-op for my buddy and I to raise some chaos against those multi-eyed freaks.

I can't see a single player demo like R1 unless they release one after the game is out.
Looking out for the improvements from the private beta though. Can't wait.

Follow up with Game stop. I preordered when they first anounced the LE of R2 And they (Game stop_ had no clue about beta codes (Insomniac talked about it on a podcast is the only reason I knew) I went back to Game stop yesterday, and paid another 20 bucks on my preoder and the guy had the Open Beta code cards, He gave me one. But I still dont think it's the right thing for the pre-order.
I ordered online for in-store pickup. They sent my beta code 2 days later.
I like the order online for instore pickup option. One less time I hear those guys try and get me to put $5 down on every game coming out in the 3 months.
Makomachine 10-01-08, 10:24 AM Thanks. Just called them back and they got two packages in now. I'll go pick them up after work. Can't freaking wait for this game - going to be a blast.
my65ffrcobra 10-01-08, 01:17 PM Any news if the game will have any project abraham stuff with it. I have been pretty intrigued by it but haven't kept up with it all.
Heads up, Amazon is offerting a $10 gift card with preorder. I don't use amazon because their shipping takes to long. I will be one of those geeks buying it the morning of the release date. It just so happened I had time and was running an errand when MGS4 came out so I went to BB to purchase it, there was a line of about 20 people and 3/4s of them where there for the MGS4 game or bundle. They had a host at the front of the store asking what they could help you find, just so they could direct you to the register where all the MGS4 stuff was. So like 15 of us where in the checkout line with no goods in hand. Man I felt like a geek that day :)

Also remember, you're keying in the code on the website not the Account Management in the PSN. You will then be emailed a key that will allow you to download the BETA some time this month.

Rest assured that when we both start out, you won't have that nice beating you gave me the last time we played it.
metafourik 10-01-08, 10:10 PM I just happen to walk into my local gamestop while I was waiting for some food from the wing spot next door and he had a brand new package of beta vouchers on the counter, dropped 5 bucks and now I am officially sign up. YA!
See you guys soon, I want to play some coop.
bdoyledimou 10-01-08, 11:21 PM I received an email from PlayStation Canada with a special Registration page for Canadians (at least it specifically prompted for my Postal Code vs a Zip Code..)
I also tried to register as Kidlet (my son) and it refused to accept his (valid) email address and password.
Fingers crossed that this is actually a positive thing.
Apparently my EB isn't eligible for any of the pre-order goodness due to some "tied selling/enticement to purchase" by-law? It is also not allowed to purchase used product either. My EB Sucks.
Received the Playstation Underground "Participate in the R2 public beta" email as well. With all these betas going on we'll never have to buy a game again. :D
KingShorty 10-01-08, 11:46 PM Congrats Eclipz.
I will have been in almost 3 betas by the end of the year (SOCOM, LBP and Resistance 2) and am still hoping to get into the Killzone 2 beta as well.

A code should be sent by email to the account that is tied to your PSN and then you enter that code in the Account Managemet tab in the XMB.

Any word on the start date? I was hearing 3rd or 4th at one point.
William Mapstone 10-03-08, 10:49 AM I do all of my gaming on my username that gives me access to the Hong Kong store. So I used the gamestop beta code on that account. I hope I didn't screw up my chances of getting in the Beta?
has anyone who signed up using the link in the email (https://beta.myresistance.net/en-us/Apply/BetaForm) received a beta code yet?
KingShorty 10-03-08, 04:56 PM This feels like SOCOM all over again.

Badgerst 10-04-08, 12:19 PM Isnt this game out next month? If so- the beta seems a bit late.
This may be my first ps3 game (or mgs4), assuming I get the ps3 prior to games release. The wife just gave the ok to pick up the ps3 as a gift(I have had the 360 since its release). Told her it was all about blu-ray movies. I love her.
Should I play the first game before r2 or can I get by with the plot?

Depends on when you get your PS3. I'd have a hard time getting a PS3 while R2 is out and having to play through R1. But then again, i've played R1. I suggest playing R1 first (its like 29 bucks now?) and then R2 to get the full experience/storyline.
You probably couldn't have picked a better time to pick up a PS3. Grats.
KingShorty 10-04-08, 12:28 PM R1 is definitely worth a playthrough.
Granted you can probably pick up R2 and get along just fine, you won't be immersed into the storyline without playing R1 because R2 picks up where R1 cliffhanger of sorts left off.

Kinda old bro. I posted that on the boards about 1-2 weeks ago.
The myresistance board is hillarious. Theres like 10 threads on where's the beta, what the hell. People's impatience is unbelievable.
Malcolm_B 10-07-08, 05:37 PM I sent in the various email thingys and if I don't get in, I can wait for the release. It's not as if it's next year, or something.
ppshooky 10-09-08, 03:11 PM If you have Resistance: Retribution and Resistance 2, you can "infect" your copy of Retribution to get health regeneration, a weapon from Resistance 2, and the ability to breath underwater and access areas of the map you weren't able to before.
What does that actually mean? All new gameplay features, unlockable items and new areas that can only be reached with an infected copy.
James Grayson, protagonist of Resistance: Retribution, will be infected by the Chimera virus similar to the original game's Nathan Hale. He'll be able to regenerate health — all health packs will be removed — and experience the game in an all new way.
In addition to health regeneration, Grayson also gets a new weapon, the HE .44 Magnum featured in Resistance 2.
Grayson also gets the ability to breathe underwater, letting him access areas of Resistance: Retribution that a normal version of our hero could never reach. That will likely play into finding the new unlockable intel only available if your copy of the PSP game is "infected."

That all depends on your likes/dislikes as a parent.
me i say go for it

If you think your kid at 15 doesnt swear away from his parents and hanging with his buddies then your seriously dellussional. The language is nothing in the SP campaign. Now if your talking about online be prepared.

As a parent of young ones, I don't like them to hear daddy's games screaming profanaties in the house so I understand what you're looking for. I'd say that the solo game has maybe a couple of off-color phrases thrown into it's 12 hour campaign. If it were a movie, the language would likely be rated PG-13 worthy at most.
Online can be pretty crazy since strangers can say anything at anytime, but you can mute everyone so it's all good.

Well online isn't technically rated. Plus he plays online games like Warhawk, Burnout, etc.

Well I don't really liked being called delusional (you spell it with only 1 L btw). My wife and I just don't want him watching movies, playing games, and listening to music with bad words. In other words we just don't want to encourage him.

Wow I spelled a word incorrectly. Thanks for pointing that out. Dude get your panties out of a wad. Encourage him to do what? swear? Then dont ever let him play anything online. Make sure you have a recording device on him when he goes to school cause god forbid he hears a swear word there. Talk about smothering. I'm all for good parenting, which it seems you are, but you are trying to shelter him from the real world IMO. People swear it happens, its in movies, games and real life. Please correct my spelling and punctuation in this post if you feel you must.

A parent should not encourage objectionable language just because a child may hear similar language in school. When I was younger, I knew many kids who had parents that would let them watch R rated movies in elementary school and middle school, which could be construed as a tacit endorsement for the activities presented in the movies. Using your logic, it could be argued that the OP should be showing his son porn because it exists and his friends may have discussed it.
To the OP: From what I remember of the campaign, there is little to no objectionable language. Online is a whole different issue, but I haven't heard many people cursing in R2 online.

Wow, I really didn't mean anything that harsh. And I think JD23 made a good post demonstrating my point of view. I just know there are game out there (I've played them) that use swear words every other word (I'm looking at you GTA4). They use them in completely unnecessary ways. Plus you seem to be forgetting he's just this month turning 15. And before you go on assuming about other peoples kids think for a moment.
P.S. He's homeschooled. And meets for classes with other homeschoolers twice a week. So I doubt there's a lot of cussing going on.
MrXpress 01-07-09, 10:12 AM I'd be more worried about your son throwing the controller through the TV after dying for the 432nd time against a relentless swarm of enemies moreso than anything offensive during the campaign. Not as huge as you. Am I not allowed to express an opinion here? Do you liberals wish any opinion expressed thats not your own? Come on man this is 2009. Kids at 15 are like my generation in their 20's. Shelter your kid all you want bad things still happen. Show your kids the real world and they will be better prepared. Why do you think the Amish allow their kids to go out into the real world at a certain age to see if its for them? Call me a douche all you want I'd rather have my kid prepared for the real world than for a fantasy world that obviously you people like to create for your kids.

While that may be true to some extent. That doesn't mean that's how it should be. Should we let 15 year old kids leave home, smoke, and have sex? Does it mean we should let them drink at 16? I don't think so. However you can raise your kids however you choose that's your choice and authority, but I would prefer you don't tell me and the others here how to raise their kids.
kinggabbo 01-07-09, 12:55 PM I applaud the poster who wanted to know about the language in this game. I have not finished the campaign yet but so far the language is not very bad. No worse than you would hear in prime time tv or in a PG-13 movie.

I never once said how you should raise your kids I just pointed out the fact that by sheltering a kid from the real world they are unprepared. Take it as you wish but in no way was I telling anyone how to raise their kids. If you took it that way I apologize, its not what I meant.

GulfWarVet 01-07-09, 06:58 PM There are 2 uses of the F word. F*** and F******. The latter near the end of the game.
As an 18 rated over here due to the gore aspect I found the campaign very mild indeed.
As for online its been really good so far language wise.:)
Malcolm_B 01-07-09, 07:08 PM If it's rated M... 'nuff said.
bgarner 01-07-09, 07:23 PM R2 isn't that bad and I would even allow a 14 year old to play, but definitely not online, or at the very worst muted.
GTA is another story and shouldn't be compared, because even for me, it gets a little tiring hearing the F word all the time and I definitely wouldn't expose my kids to it.
As much as they would hear it all the time, the fact that I would allow it in my home would mean that I support it which I wouldn't.
There of course will be one parent that would allow their 15 year old to do anything including having sex in the house, however, if my son/daughter is forunate/unfortunately enough to have that friend, then I guess there is a chance that they will probably do stuff behind my back anyways like play GTA. However, at least they would have the understanding that there is a level of respect that is warranted in our home and games like that wouldn't be allowed for that age.
Now when they turn 18 and move out, they can do whatever they want.

My son is turning 15 this month. I was just wondering if this game would suite a 15 year old boy. How bad the language is my is main concern?
I don't think the language is bad at all in either Resistance game and I personally don't mind the shoot 'em up stuff but definately can do without the f bombs and cussing constantly like Grand Theft Auto.... and yes I do cuss; just at work and not at the house in front of the kid. Actually, I think we went throught a similar discussion when Uncharted first came out.
My kid plays R2 and he's younger than 15 and yes, he plays online too with me and we hand the controller back and forth (I know I'm a BAD BAD parent). Actually he plays COD too (oh crap did I say that out loud)...... sshhh don't send the parenting Nazi's after me.
EDIT: The cussing online is not NEAR as bad as it was playing the "T" game "Star Wars" Battlefront on the PS2... seems to me at least that the guys online with R2 and COD don't really cuss *that* much and not we do NOT wear a headset when we play.

Thanks. I'm not really worried about the online cussing, because we'll either turn it off or he'll have a headset on. My wife doesn't really like the cussing in games, but she can't hear what's going on in the headset. :D

Doesn't R2 have 2 player competitive online? Just wondering why you pass the controller if it does. You mean the Zombie Nazis will come after you.
ppshooky 01-08-09, 03:25 PM I'm fairly certain you can do split screen competitive online. I know you can with co-op.

True... we play down in the basement in the media room while the wife stays upstairs so she can't hear the cussing anyway and the kid just chuckles a lttle and informs me that some of the guys use the "F" word. People seem to get upset when we use the headset because you can hear our game audio with the volume cranked so we don't use the headset much (I prefer volume vs headset.... now if there was a way to turn the open mic off I would be all for that).

Yes, R2 does have the co-op split screen mode (haven't played the competitive mode much) but we tend to like the FULL 61" screen most of the time but yes we do play the split screen as well. What I miss with R2 vs R1 is the split screen Campaign mode so during this mode we have no choice but to pass the controller back and forth.

pdiss88 01-09-09, 01:48 PM As a final answer to the question about colorful language, there are two droppings of the F-bomb and both come late in the game. Other than that, it was basically just "what the hell" and "dammit".
And I mute everyone online because I find it extremely annoying. I like playing my console games in peace and quiet.
Also, I feel like bragging about my 16-game win streak on deathmatch.

Honestly nope. Unless they come out with new maps I am pretty much done with R2. Skirmish isnt bad on the competative side but big games get to chaotic. Definitely isnt holding my attention like R1 or COD4 did. I leveled all 3 class's up to 30 in co-op but in comp it takes like 200k points to raise 1 level. I am level 20 in comp. Only trophies I dont have is the 1 for 10k kills in comp and the last one for getting all the in game trophies. Dont think I'll be getting them either. I'm back to COD4 until something else catches my attention.

avgjoemomma 01-12-09, 03:33 PM Honestly nope.
Damn, that's my problem. I'd like to get 100% in this game but it's getting really boring. The trophy requirements for co-op and competitive are just prolonging the agony. I really hate it when developers put in such high requirements that just make you grind levels forever:mad::mad::mad:

Yeah the 10k kills one should have been 5k IMO. And the team balancing in comp is fudged up. Like, I am a supreme commander, and I will be put in a squad with 4 other players that are privates, yet the rival squad will have 1 SC, 3 generals and a private. So naturally you spend the game getting owned. And the spawn points are horrific. Can not tell you how many times I have spawned right in front of an enemy only to be killed as sonn as I spawn. Yet all IG says is they are working on a patch. Wow 2.5 months after release and you cant patch any of the problems?

Noticed the same problem with the comp balance. It's terrible. The spawn points are either too close to the enemy or so far that you spend most of the time trying to run to the correct location, but by that point you're ready to run to the next one:confused:
