View Full Version : GTA outputting in 720p, am I missing something?
For some reason, GTA is outputting in 720p. The box states 1080p, so why is my TV switching to 720? Am I missing a setting somewhere? Should I care?
If it helps, I have am using a 57" DLP. 1080p works from the Playstation media bar.
Thanks.
bassmonkeee 05-07-08, 10:49 AM 720p is the native resolution. If you want to force 1080, you'll have to uncheck 720p under your video options.
I haven't tried it yet, but some people say that 1080p looks a little crisper. It's not worth the hassle of checking/unchecking 720p to me.
Porter_ 05-07-08, 11:00 AM i can confirm that it looks a little better in 1080p (at least on my tv). I agree with bassmonkey though, it's not worth the hassle of checking/unchecking boxes every time you want to play a different game. gta isn't leaving my ps3 anytime soon, so i'm leaving it at 1080p for the time being. as soon as another game grabs my attention though i'll just run it at 720p to avoid the hassle of messing with video output settings each time.

That sounds like a pain in the ass.
But if you're saying GTA4 looks a little better (sharper) in 1080p then I might try it.
Did you notice if the game runs any slower in 1080p vs 720p?

framerate seems to be the same between the two.
i have read the ps3 version is actually 640p.

Yes and then it is scaled to other resolutions, that is correct, however, there a number of games that work in a similar fashion, ie. Halo 3.
Shin CZ 05-07-08, 10:23 PM Almost every single game (aside from downloadable 'arcade' games) for both the 360 and ps3 run at 720p or less. Almost all are upscaled to 1080p on the 360, and certain ps3 games upscale to 1080p internally by the ps3.
The advantage of the 360 vs the ps3 is that the 360 upscales EVERYTHING to your TV's native resolution, while the ps3 lets the TV do the upscaling, resulting in less admirable results compared to the 360.
Don't buy into the 1080p hype, at least when it comes to video games. We're still some time away until most games are TRUE 1080p (meaning NEXT generation or more).
Dashboard 05-07-08, 10:30 PM After playing GTA4 in 1080P i cannot play it in 720P anymore... i mean i can see the difference. It just sucks that sometimes i forget to recheck the 1080i and 720P option so when i start another game it looks like crap (NHL08 I'm looking at you! :D)

Do you know if this includes PC games? are they typically just scaled by what you set the res at?
kylebisme 05-08-08, 07:17 AM Nah, the vast majorty of PC games render at whatever resolution you set them to output. But as for GTA4 and most other console games, if it looks better at 1080p it is just because the console is doing a better job scaling than your TV.

PC games are different. Computers are still much more powerful than consoles. I know for a fact many pc games render at true 1080p or better. Hell, pc games have been doing high definition longer than the term itself many times over.
I'm not sure about console games also released on PC.
bdwright77 05-09-08, 12:46 PM Isnt MGS4 "supposed" to be in what you have termed TRUE 1080p?
