View Full Version : 34XBR800 component or DVi with PS3?

does anyone know what would be better for playing the PS3 games & Bluray on my Sony 34XBR800 CRT? (which is HDCP)

I'm using component now. It looks great but i'm curious if the DVI would look a little sharper.

From what understand DVI can only do RGB. What the difference than using component with Yb/Cr/Pb (whatever that is) which is better? Has anyone done a comparison?

Internally, the DVI input is converted to component video almost immediately. There is really no advantage except that it is HDCP compliant, if needed, and it gives you an additional high resolution input.

I have same model and with a HD cable box it made a difference. Now it is up to you if worth it or not. It was a slightly better pic on DVI, but that was on my TV and I have heard with others (not same TV) that it was actually worse (HDMI)...
Basically it comes down to the cost of the cable vs the slightly better PQ??

Hope this helps

Also, would you please let me know if you decide to go with the DVI. Can you even get that cable for the PS3? and if you do, what do you think of the difference?

you can buy a HDMI to DVI cable. They're harder to find but they're out there. Abviously this will pass HD video but no sound.

Also, keep in mind that that TV is 1080i at its best:o
But, IMO, is a damn good picture. Especially after I had it calibrated :D
I did read that the PS3 does 1080i, too. And I believe it would be worth it!

And to raouliii. that isn't completely true. I went through the schematic for it and DVI goes through more and better processing then the component inputs..

...And to raouliii. that isn't completely true. I went through the schematic for it and DVI goes through more and better processing then the component inputs..You'll have to explain this to me and we can discuss the issue. I'll admit, I haven't taken an in-depth look at it.

My take on it. The 34XBR800 has a UD board that functions as the DVI/Video7 decoder. The output of this board is fed into the M (video processor) board as Y/Cb/Cr just as the other two component inputs, video5 & video6. Specifically, all three component signals are routed to IC2006,CXA2171 which is essentially a switch that selects from the three. Any processing after this switch will be available for all three.

This indicates to me that all three component video signals have the same potential for additional video processing. Of course, service menu adjustments can invoke different levels of this processing and can certainly make all three look different with the same source material. The only additional processing available on the DVI input would be the decoder parameters themselves that are invoked on the UD board.

You are right and I apologize, as i didn't mean to say it is any different from video 5 & 6 going to the picture.............BUT, visually looks better and is to me a better input then the component inputs.......

Because almost all PS3 games are 720p, I doubt there will be a visible difference.

When I connect a PC through DVI, I set its rez to 960 x 540. Here, DVI makes a difference. The short "internal cabling" (just traces on a circuit board, I suspect) is of very good quality, if you want to consider the set's DVI port another component input.
