Wow, $500mil is pretty amazing. But the math in the article (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hVLnDu3OLPfL9gVGgA4ybW_EuIsQD90GVEDO0) confuses me.

"The title sold about 3.6 million units on April 29, its opening day, bringing in roughly $310 million."

How is it that the average is $86 per copy? I know there are plenty of people buying the special edition, but there MUST be more people buying the $60 standard edition.

bingo. Don't people in Australia pay like $700 for the same ps3 we get for $400? I think many countries have next-gen games released at $100 or more.

Maybe they were also counting the Special Edition of GTA4 which retails for $90.

It's already sold out online @ Best Buy: link (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8708785&st=GTA4&lp=3&type=product&cp=1&id=1199496320778)

I think sales figures for games are allowed, just as long as it isn't a PS3 vs. Xbox vs Wii thing.

Half a billion dollars. Wow. If that doesn't make the entertainment industry stand up and take notice, I don't know what will.

Still got a ways to go to catch Titanic ($1,835,400,000) on the movies vs. video games battle, but it might just get there after all.

Definitely adjusted for sales in foreign currency. Considering our woeful dollar, I'm sure Take-Two is loving those foreign sales!

Even more interesting is that GTAIV's first week's sales figures brought in revenues greater than 25% of EA's total buyout offer!! Though I don't want to see it happen, I can't imagine how they could turn down EA's tender offer in good conscience. If I were a shareholder, I'd be pissed. Take-Two lives and dies by the GTA series and this is a chance for shareholders to cash out now before the series goes stale (which WILL happen sooner or later).

Given that this is the fourth installment, I think this is their chance to get out while they're still on top AND get a premium for their stock price. Take-Two would damn near be a penny stock without GTA.

i think your views on take-two are dead on. I agree they should get out while the series is doing well, cause like you said it will go stale sooner or later. good post Avarice.

They already knew how good this game was going to sell, that's why they didn't sell to EA. I think they still got two or three more good GTA's left in them. Edit: They already sold 500 Million worth, I don't doubt that they will sell 2 Billion worth by the time they bring out the GTA V

Damn, I can't wait til the big-time movie money gets thrown at the video game industry...

edit- and yes, I realize it's not a fair comparison since these numbers don't take in to account post box office sales(DVD). It's still impressive.

Especially considering the game industry is growing at its fastest rate ever. I think it was on an IGN podcast recently where they said that March of 08 was the 2nd largest non-December month ever for the industry. Only November of 07 was bigger.

Are those movie revenues for box office sales only? Do they include cassettes and discs?

To be fair, once again the $500 million is for worldwide GTAIV sales, while the list that was posted includes only box-office receipts in the U.S. I'm pretty sure that Titanic's wordwide numbers are quite staggering; definitely over $1 billion, non inflation-adjusted.

LOL thats my patcher like prediction, lets wait and see what happens.
