View Full Version : Is Plasma going the way of CRT?
M@verick 05-07-08, 05:14 PM I went to a nearby custom installer in the DFW area to check out some of the speakers they had setup in their demo rooms.
Looking around I noticed they had a few Pioneer Elite and non-Elites on display but tons of LCDs from Sharp and Sony on display.
I asked if they were planning to offer the 9G Pios and the answer was NO. They are only going to offer their existing stock of Elites until they are gone and then they will stop selling Plasma TVs completely. They aren't seeing the demand for plasma that they used to and their customers are asking for it less and less.
Also they didn't feel that the 8 series Panasonics can compete with the Pios and they've dropped Samsung from their line as well.
I can't help but think that Plasma is going the way of CRT. Best picture quality possible, but high cost and market perception has led to a decline in sales.

So long as plasma retains their superior picture quality and performance they will live on. Do remember, CRT's have been around for decades.

CRT's were around for decades because people continued to manufacture them.
In 20 years you will be very hard pressed to find a CRT still in use. It will go the way of the vacuum tube audio equipment.

High costs???? All but Pioneer, Fujitsu, and Runco are much cheaper than similarly sized LCD's....
there have several articles that lead me to believe that plasma may not live as long as the crts. the reason quoted is that there are other technologies like OLEDs and lasers that have better potential...only time will tell

And where are CRTs now?
LOL!

I'm still using one.:(
Neoison 05-07-08, 11:40 PM Plasma and CRT are related technologies. Just like CRT, plasma has increased quality vastly. CRT just ten years ago peaked w/ quality. I dont think plasma is going anywhere soon.

Plasma isn't going anywhere until one of these new techs like OLED or SED really takes off.
It won't be done in by LCD.
EscapeVelocity 05-07-08, 11:49 PM In case anyone didnt get it, CRTs have a superior PQ.
Perhaps they will make a comeback.
yes but they have 2 serious issues against them: weight and size. can you imagine how much a 60" crt will weigh?

Hey I just bought a great sounding tube headphone amp

I'd guess CRT's are still the main TV in most homes.
I still have a 27" Hitachi CRT in my bedroom that is pushing 19 years.
The darn thing won't die. I doubt I'll ever be able to say I have 19 year old 50" Pio Plasma that is still working. I also have a Sears washer, dryer and fridge that are still chugging along after 22 years. They don't build them like they did in the past.
EscapeVelocity 05-08-08, 09:53 AM Your 50" Pio will have peak lumens of 0.3 foot lamberts.
LOL!
Stock up on CRTs now.

I hope my cyber eye implants have better PQ by 19 years. :P
Who knows what tech will come up in that much time.
Sandman209 05-08-08, 10:18 AM CRT's were around for a long ass time. Plasma's won't be around as long as CRT's but that's not due to the technology or because LCD's are better. Plasma and LCD will go away because technological development works much faster nowadays.
We went from 720p to 1080p in in a nanosecond compared to the leap from SD to HD, or CRT to flat panel, or black and white to color. Do we really expect plasma or LCD to keep up with the video technolgoies 10 years from now? However, for all we know, OLED and lazer panels could take a lot longer to develop due unforseen problems. We could be using plasma and LCD for a while. Nobody knows. It's sort of like back in the fifties and sixties when everyone assumed the technology of the future would be jet pack to replace cars, video communicators to replace phones, and Olympus Mons on Mars replacing Disney World. However, back then nobody predicted the Internet to replace newspapers or VCR's to replace movie theaters. It's fun to guess about he future of technology but history has shown that we're usually wrong.

They also have banding and contouring issues.
No display is perfect and considering how long they had to try to make CRT's great compared to how long they have had with plasmas, I think it is a fantastic tech.

If I went into a custom installer's store and saw only LCD and no Plasma I would turn around and laugh my way out of the store. They obviously would not be a serious custom installer.
indeed the plasmas have seen tremendous progress/improvement in a very short time. the CRTs (if you are old enough to remember the very first experimental CRT based HDs) also had/will have a "geometric distortion" as there are no fixed pixels.
i love CRT's, still have 3 of them but i am ready to move on...waiting for the OLEDs and LASERS

Well 2 channel audio has dropped off but tubes are coming back a bit.
Many from China, but I have a Conrad Johnson set in my office for the mellow sound.
I also have several ss amps for power hungry Thiels and Magnapan's in two other setups.
I just ordered our second plasma about two hours ago, I'll try and suffer thru being behind the head of the pack.
I still like my old crt's also, can't quite get used to what I see on most lcd's that EVERYONE else is buying.
