View Full Version : Plasma thoughts for basement/gaming please...

I have been considering buying a second plasma.

My current set up is a calibrated Pioneer Elite 940HD 42" plasma in our living room. I have my PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii connected to it. Lately I've been wanting to stay up later to play these games - but my wife goes to bed early (as do our 3 year old and 1 year old sons) and our living room is directly beneath our bedroom. So obviously I can't be keeping my wife up while I play in the room directly below her (especially the Xbox 360 since I need to crank up the volume the drown out the console noise).

Anyway - I'm trying to decide if I should just snag another 42"ish 720p Plasma (or LCD) for in my basement to play my games on (and a little tv) - or if I should upgrade to a newer 1080p 42" or 50" for the living room and move my Pioneer Elite down to the basement.

We mostly watch broadcast TV and not much in the way of HD-DVD or Blu Ray movies - so I'm kind of leaning toward another 720p 42" Plasma or possibly LCD.

Can someone recommend me a good 42" 720p plasma for gaming in my basement? Obviously I'd love to have another Elite but can't afford another one!

I'd say panny 42px80 ($1200, 720p) if I was really trying to save cash.

Though if i were you, I'd leave the pio upstairs, and buy a Samsung 50A550, or a Panny 50PZ85 (both 1080p, both $2300) for gaming, you'll love it with your PS3 and 360. It's a real toss-up between these 2 TVs, the Panny has better blacks, and a less reflective screen (reflection probably shouldn't matter in the basement), the Sammy has better colour accuracy, and shadow detail. I'd buy whichever one I could get a better deal on. Or you could compromise, and get the 50PX80 ($1700, 720p). I'd go 50' though, you won't regret it.

Obviously you can find much lower prices than these, which are MSRP.

Thanks for the suggestions Coggs - I'm having a hard time justifying much more than about a 1k for a plasma for mostly just gaming - so I'll most likely lean toward the 42px80.

I appreciate the reply.

Well if you are on any type of a budget and you just want to solve the problem, get some wireless headphones for gaming.

If you are looking to buy a new toy and this is your reason, go with Coggs advice! I have a 42" and the next display I buy will be 50+. Go 1080p if you are using it for games often, if you are going to use it for movies and TV 720p would be fine. 2¢
