I am confused about controlling a TVs volume using a CECB. Does the CECB use a remote code for the TV (and uses the TVs volume control) or does it happen another way?
I have an oldl TV with no remote control. I would like to control its volume through a CECB remote also a 120V switched outlet on the back of the CECB to give the TV power would be great.
Maybe the digital stream will work for this old TV? I'd rather get the Zenith box but it appears the tV volume control on that uses the TVs volume.
What models of CECBs can control TV volume when the TV accepts no IR signals?

Here's the simplest advice I can give you (and what I do as well):
- Turn the Coupon Box's volume all the way to 100.
- Use the TV's remote to control the TV volume.
So basically it's just like when you use a DVD player or VCR. You have two remotes, one in each hand. The TV remote is for changing the volume; the DVD/VCR remote is for other stuff.
Oh:
The way the Coupon Box changes the volume is by changing the line level in the video cable. That's not really the proper way it should be done, but that's how it was designed.

A feature on the CECBs that seems to be pretty common is that they can vary the output volume to the TV. So, you would set your TV volume to a "comfortable" level, and then use this feature.
Some of the CECBs are coming with a "universal" remote - the Digital Stream 9900 DTX from Radio Shack has one - and if your TV is one of those in it's database - then you could power on/off and adjust the volume on your TV with it as well as the CECB. YMMV depending on your TV / CECB.

I'm still a little confused as my TV has NO Remote at all (does not accept IR signals), the TV is a little before IR remotes became common on TVs.
A CECB controlling a line level sounds perfect for this TV, but which CECBs control line level?

I am thinking you will have some volume adjustment even if your TV does not support a remote.
Some of the boxes do not control your TV at all but still have a volume control on the remote.
However, some may have a lower volume adjustments than others.
satpro said the CoShip didn't let you adjust the volume as much for example.
You would always try buying locally and see if the box will work for you.

All boxes I've seen will work for you. A box like the DS will ALSO control your TV's volume, but since your TV does not have a remote those buttons will not work for you. You can still use the other volume control though.
Note I know of no unit that has a switched power outlet. I'd suggest something like a Clapper, or similar wireless switch if you want to turn off your TV remotely. I don't expect any of the boxes to have a switched outlet. Their all pretty cheap, they don't even have a display on the unit.

Just to be sure you are clear on what jjeff said, the Digital Stream DTX-9900 will allow you to vary the volume from its remote once you have manually set the volume control on your TV to an appropriate level. It is one that controls the level of the audio coming out of the CECB. Its mute function will also work for your setup.

That is how I use my Zenith converter box, just to bring the volume a little higher or a little lower than the most comfortable volume I have already set on my TV.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I have had HDTV boxes since 2003, but these CECBs for the old TV are new to me.
Even better news today is the new thread on a possible extension for the coupons. I may be able wait it out long enough to get one of those TR-40s.
I must say the ATSC tuners have come a long way over the years.
I'm in a multipath prone environment. My first box could ony get two channels (2nd gen). By 4th gen I could get a couple more. By 5th gen I could get all channels with the exception of one. Some people now getting their first box have no idea how difficult it was chasing ghosts back then.
