Hi All ... and thanks for any assistance
I've got my PS3 (firmware 2.30) hooked up to a Panasonic Plasma (TH-42PZ700U) via HDMI for video and Panasonic SC-PT960 via optical for audio.
This is the problem ... I'm getting Dolby Digital 5.1 but not DTS sound. When I change the audio track to DTS on the DVD no sound comes through the receiver, but it works fine when I switch it back to Dolby Digital 5.1
Here's what I tried on the PS3 based on past forum advise:
1) Sound Setting ... Digital Out (Optical) ... and checked Dolby Digital and DTS ... saved settings
2) Set BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital & HDMI) to Bitstream
3) Tried a different optical cable
4) Reset the PS3
5) Tried some different DVD's (X-Men 2, Fellowship of the Ring)
On my receiver I've tried:
1) Turned PCM off ... and on (no effect)
2) Turned off Dynamic Range ... and on (no effect)
3) Checked manual to ensure it supports DTS (it does! ... awful manual by the way)
4) The digital optical input is on and working because Dolby Digital is working fine
I'm out of ideas ... What do you guys & gals got?????
THANKS!!

Sounds odd.
When you play the DTS track from a DVD, does your receiver's display tell you it's getting the DTS track? If it is, then the problem may be on the receiver end. Do you have a standalone DVD player with an optical output? If so, check DTS output to your receiver through that.
If your receiver isn't displaying that it's getting a DTS track, then try forcing DTS output in the PS3 sound settings (uncheck everything except for DTS). Double, triple, and quadruple check that you have the PS3 set to bitstream and output audio via optical.

that is weird. the receiver you're using does have a DTS decoder. perhaps it can't handle the high bitrate of the DTS stream? it is 1.5 mbps, and some receivers can't handle DTS bitstreams at that rate. you could check that by selecting the DTS sound track, and then setting the ps3's output to pcm instead of bitstream.

Thanks confidenceman for the reply ....
The receiver doesn't display anything when I switch the DVD over to DTS. When i have it on Dolby Digital (DD), the receiver displays two icons indicating it's receiving the signal, but nothing for the DTS.
Unfortunately the extra DVD player I got only has coaxial digital not optical. My receiver doesn't have a coaxial input.
I've already tried forcing the PS3 to output only DTS by unselecting the other boxes but with no luck! I checked my settings like 10+ times and yes it's set to bitstream ... it has to be for the DD to be working over the optical cable.
I also checked with the website for my receiver and yes it states it has a built in decoder for DTS.
It's a puzzle I want to fix ... any other suggestions

I think you pretty much cover your problem. Might be a problem with your receiver then. That is the only thing I can think off.
I have an "acceptable" RCA receiver and I get DTS and DD through Optical cable with no problem.
Might wanna try to get a new your receiver with lossless sound. I'm planning to get the Onkyo 606.

I tried switching the output to pcm on the PS3 and no sound came through the receiver for the DTS or the Dolby Digital audio tracks.
Is it possible the DTS decoder is broken in the receiver ... that there's something defective with the receiver unit?
I'm using some fairly inexpensive optical cables that I purchased through Amazon for around $7 p/cable. I'm assuming the cable to fine if it functions for the DD.
The search goes on ... at least the DD is working so I can enjoy the 5.1

Something is obviously screwed up, then, if the reciever won't take 2 channel PCM over optical. I suppose it could be your cable, but I've used a very abused cable for a long time without that sort of issue.

Hi All,
I figured it out. It simple, but not clearly obvious when looking at the manual or tech specs. The SC-PT960 only supports DD 5.1 & 2 channel PCM over optical but not DTS 5.1. It will decode DTS when playing a disc using its internal player but won't do so when receiving an external feed via the optical in.
I was wrong earlier about the receiver not working when switching over to 2 channel PCM. It does, not sure what I did that made me think that it didn't.
