View Full Version : Vizio's 32 inch Plasma's are out
Jason Bourne 07-02-08, 08:35 AM ....however I am getting the speedy IR, but it goes away after a few seconds and I only notice it on a black fade. I'm certain it'll go away after break-in.
Hi,
I'm wondering why you think IR will go away after break-in. Most of the discussion on break-in here stresses that the sole purpose of break-in is to age the phosphors evenly across the display during the early hours of use. Are you saying that there is a relationship between phosphor age and IR?
I'm not a techie but I have a VP322 with IR so I'm curious since I'm looking at a mid Sep deadline to return to Walmart.
Thanks.
Jason Bourne 07-02-08, 08:38 AM Jason, any chance you can post a side by side comparison picture of the Pioneer and Vizio?
Also, are you sure it wasn't a 32" Pioneer Plasma instead of an LCD?
While I'm positive on the 32" being an LCD and hoping it comes to the US by Sept, i would LOVE for Pio to make a 32" plasma.:D:D:D
The Pio 4280 and VP322 are wall mounted in different rooms with different lighting so a side-by-side comparison is not literally possible. Also, I am not done tweaking the VP322; I have the DVE calibration DVD on order.
gedalneil 07-02-08, 11:43 AM Vizio VO32L review and suggested settings for it at http://www.tweaktv.com/the-miller-channel/vo32l-32-inch-lcd-review-first-look.html
cesslinger 07-02-08, 12:14 PM That link is for the LCD. The plasma is VP322.
sweetcosmicpope 07-02-08, 12:25 PM Well, the break-in process, from what I understand is to age or wear-in the phosphors. As such, once the phosphors have gotten well worn the IR shouldn't happen as easily. That's not to say age will make permanant IR go away, but rather, make it more difficult to occur in the first place.
mr_america_117 07-02-08, 09:31 PM Just wanted to chime in and say I purchased one of these as well, just the other day. Calibrated it and everything, and I'm getting no annoying lines, however I am getting the speedy IR, but it goes away after a few seconds and I only notice it on a black fade. I'm certain it'll go away after break-in....
Speedy IR? You just got the set and you basically have a set with an IR response of the TV that would take at least 200 hours to break-in.
My IR is still present (but slowly fading in time) I believe it's at least at 100 hours...
And I still haven't received word from Vizio about the lines. Maybe we did get crappy sets. Maybe I'll go back to Wal-Mart at the middle of the month if it keeps up...

Do you have a proof source that Vizio plasma IR is is related to or decreases with the age of the phosphors?
I have two Pio 8Gs that never had a whiff of IR even in the first hours before I ran the break-in DVD.
If you read the break-in threads you will see comments that break-in has little if nothing to do with control of IR.
If the P50HDTV10a is any indication of how Vizios age, the image retention starts to go down dramatically at some point regardless if it is part of normal break in procedures or not. I never did an exacting hours calculation as to when. I watched mostly full screen content off HD stations ran the image cleaner every so often and now about 8 months later IR is much reduced and fades much more quickly. I've noticed it is worse if the set has been running for a long period of time (seveal hours). My particular set was made in September or October of last year if I recall.
Still where say the HD DVD logo on the bootup of the HD DVD would stay ingrained for a while after booting the player (a first generation HDV5000), it now goes away almost instantly, but seems to to have gotten much better as time goes on. Out of the box the HDMI 1 and other inputs in green would stay for a few seconds after switching, these no longer leave IR at all.
I did notice that the set actually seemed to brighten a notch or two, I had it set at 42 and now have the brighness down to 39, it could just be my eyes adjusting though.
That said if the sets age similarly by design then the IR should diminish after a set amount of time.
Jason Bourne 07-03-08, 12:12 AM Thanks for the empirical data; it's nice to hear your IR decreased over time.
Unconvinced that running the break-in DVD has any benefit for IR though.
Cheers.
cesslinger 07-03-08, 06:31 PM The IR on my set is disappearing at an acceptable level. I have been playing NG2 for about a week on it 3-4 hours a sitting, the life bar disappears as soon as I go to the xbox dashboard to watch a movie or switch a game. I am thouroghly enjoying this TV. On a side note, a couple of friends checked out the TV at wally world and were "appalled" that I purchased a 720P tv. I don't know what they are smoking, especially since neither induvidual even owns an HD tv to begin with. The 1080P hype machine is working well (for tv's under 50-in).
tmtang64 07-03-08, 06:36 PM Hello,
Here are the settings I got using DVE.
Brightness = 43
Contrast = 50
Color = 34
Tint = 2
Sharpness = 0
Color Temp = cool
DNR = Medium
Black Level Extender = On
White Peak Limiter = On
CTI = Off
Flesh Tone = On
Adaptive Luma = Off
Can someone test this settings out and let me know if I need further adjustments?
Thanks,
tmtang64
dbhashman93 07-03-08, 09:25 PM I'd appreciate it if more people could either confirm or deny the presence of the lines when using component connections. I have them too and if it is an isolated incident I'd rather exchange the tv sooner rather than later and get the break in process started again
StinDaWg 07-04-08, 01:09 AM I have them. I'm definitely taking the set back and getting a Panasonic or Samsung.
This Plasma stuff is too much for me to worry about right now, I've decided to go with the series4 Samsung LCD after reading this entire thread. Thanks for everyone's input on the set! Hope you guys get rid of the fast IR, and enjoy your sets. Maybe I'll drop in again one day when I have the time/patience to care for a plasma screen.

I bought my 50" Vizio plasma mainly because it was cheap (in all I only paid $200 more than this 32", which was virtually impossible to refuse for a new TV). I knew what would be involved so I played it careful for a month or so. To me the results are well worth it. Once that period was over I wasn't particularly careful in any respect, and the TV still works fine. The only hassle is a few weeks.
artiemlucky 07-05-08, 02:00 PM Hi, I've had this TV for about a month and I love it! Great PQ for the price.
My question pertains to the type of wall mount I will need to mount this TV. I apologize for my ignorance but this is all very new to me. I'm thinking of the model number 3724 on monoprice (can't post a link yet it seems).
Thank you to anyone who could answer my question!
mr_america_117 07-07-08, 01:00 AM For all the people who also have (or had) problems with the component cables, Vizio has yet to set me an email response as the lines slowly start to fade away from the set.
And for all the people concerned about this set go out and buy this set before Wal-Mart pulls it. It is really a steal, and if you don't like it, you have 90, yes 90 days to return it back to the store. What do you really have to lose??
This tv is fantastic. I am fascinated by it and I am re-watching all of my dvd's (there's like 60 of them). Cloverfield last night looked real (and the film was shot in HD; I am running the DVD not the Blu-Ray)
Not to mention MGS4 on PS3 at 1080p is truly amazing :P

Is the fading of the lines significant enough for you to believe that they will eventually go completely away?
Also why run MGS4 at 1080p and not 720p? The game is natively 768p so the PS3 is scaling it up and the TV is scaling it back down.
Bill1313 07-07-08, 09:39 AM I doubt Wal-Mart will pull the tv because I've never seen them pull "anything" unless it was a big news story on some item or the company who made the item issues a recall themselves. Same as above, do you think the lines will fade after the breakin in period?
Yea why would Wal-Mart pull this TV?
Wal-Mart would likely only pull it over a safety hazard (result of CPSC), or quality control issue (at request of the company that made it) or inordinate number of defective sets (but they didn't recall those iLo sets with the remote control lockup issues).
sweetcosmicpope 07-07-08, 03:58 PM An update: I started getting the lines, as well...likewise, only on component input. I don't really notice it on anything, except really dark scenes. Really, the only movie I've had a noticeable problem with was X-Files. As I said, however, it's only on component, not on any other inputs, so I think it must be some kind of hardware issue, in that respect. I'm not going to bother returning the tv or anything, though. I already have another set of HDMI cables coming for this DVD player.
Also, Mr. Bourne, I don't have any scientific know-how to explain the aging phosphors. Essentially, just experience with my last plasma, and correspondence with other plasma owners. If I am mistaken, I apologize, but the way I understand it has something to do with the phosphors burning hotter and brighter early on in life.
I know on my sammy they tout the fact that there is no break-in period necessary on their sets, and at the risk of the $1000+ I spent on it, I tried it out and it did not dissappoint. Now on this set, I do get the IR very quickly, but it goes away after a couple minutes of viewing, even if the IR happens to be within the black bars, it fades after about 10 minutes (that's the only time during viewing I ever really notice it).
In general, though, I'm still happy. I bought this without alot of hope of it being great, just a spare tv for my room, but even with the IR issue, which honestly isn't that bad, it's been an awesome tv for the price. Does it hold a candle to my sammy? Hell, no! But it's still awesome.
I'll try and post some of my settings tomorrow. If I can recall correctly, my settings are much lower; closer to the 30-35 range, but I may be mistaken. I used a thx optimizer for my settings.
Krinshaw 07-07-08, 06:01 PM A question for those who have noticed IR. At what distance are you seeing it at? Can it be seen 8ft away or do you have to be closer? I'm considering this for my bedroom and my viewing distance will be 8-9 ft.

At times, when I've just switched on the TV and open up the guide(dish network) for about 30 seconds, I can see the lines of the guide from a viewing distance of about 8ft. Once I watch full-screen content(which I always do), the IR disappears in minutes.
Also, when I've been watching a channel with a bright/white logo for a bit (eg.animal planet, espnhd etc), I am able to notice it from even 8ft. The IR goes away pretty fast though. I'm well past the 100 hour mark but still surprised at how quickly IR appears. I'm still undecided on whether I'll keep the set or get another before my 90 days is up.
mr_america_117 07-08-08, 12:33 AM Haha, I didn't mean "pulling" it as in a recall as in, get it while they have it before they put out a different model.
And to the user who asked about 1080p, it's because it's better. 1080p is beautiful and I do see a difference in 720p vs 1080p. And the PS3 also chose to output it to 1080p instead of 720p.
hookem12387 07-09-08, 09:24 PM I can't get my harmony to set up correctly on this thing. Any tips?
iainuki 07-10-08, 12:29 AM Just bought this TV and noticed bars exactly as shown earlier in the thread when using an xbox360 hooked up with component. Here's the image that was posted earlier in the thread:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/noj11jon/DSC04795.jpg
It seems like a lot of people are reporting similar issues while using component and are recommending HDMI as a solution. That's unfortunately not possible for my model of xbox which I use as my DVD player as well. Is anyone not getting these bars while using component? If it's an isolated problem I'll get a replacement. If it's universal then I'm just taking the TV back.
litwick87 07-10-08, 03:01 AM First post, I just registered, but have been reading up on this tv on here for a few weeks now.
Today after work I picked up the 32" at walmart and got it all setup. So far all I did was turn down the brightness, sharpness, and contrast? to about 38 I belive and let the break in DVD run for a bit.
I also tested out the 360 (component) with GTA4 and NBA2K8 and I did NOT see any bars running across the screen thank god.. (so far)
any ways after reading through this thread and forgetting where alot of stuff is I'm looking for a few cliff notes on a few things
1) What is the optimum settings for the break in dvd / break in settings?
2) what is the best DIY calibration method after ~100-200hrs of a solid break in?
3) is it safe to leave the TV running for about 9-10hrs while I'm at work while it is looping the break in DVD? I don't want to leave it running over night as it will annoy me to death.
thanks for anyhelp
litwick87 07-10-08, 03:09 AM I also forgot to mention that the break in dvd is running on a HDMI upscaling player @ 1080i (dont know if it can do 720p) does that matter at all? If so I may tinker around with it I guess.
I can't get my harmony to set up correctly on this thing. Any tips?
Just set the device up manually and learn each command if it is not in the Harmony database. May want to try one of their other model #s first.

Ok I got it. Thanks for the help I'm new to the Harmony thing
litwick87 07-10-08, 12:45 PM Has anyone confirmed that the higher end Vizio plasma remotes with the zoom & aspect ratio buttons works on the 32"?
Also when I put in a dvd that was widescreen I couldn't change the wide or H&V sizing on it because they were grey'd out. How can I get widescreen movies to show up fullscreen? Sorry if this has already been answered
blazerqb11 07-10-08, 12:56 PM Is anyone with the 42 inch model experiencing the lines problem with component inputs or is it just the 32 inch model?

This looks to me like interference that is picked up somewhere. Wonder if putting ferrites on the power cord or component cables would help it.
I am gald I found this thread, I read a few pages and it looks like this is a good tv for the price. I am a student and I am looking for a 32' tv and this fits in my budget. What I would like to know is if this is better than the 32' lcd and if there is a significant price difference. Please suggest which should I get and will I have any problems with any of these tvs, since I want something that will not take my time or energy to deal with if something goes wrong.
iainuki 07-10-08, 02:30 PM Has anyone plugged anything into this TV using the VGA input?
cesslinger 07-10-08, 04:33 PM I have plugged in the xbox 360 w/ vga and also my laptop. Just change the res to 1360x768 and it looks decent. I am not using that input on a regular basis, I felt that the HDMI had better color depth. Lucky me, my laptop has hdmi out.
Woodrow 07-10-08, 10:04 PM stuck to replace previous Vizio sticky
noj11jon 07-10-08, 10:14 PM Thanks to the guy who is talking to Vizio about the lines through component video. I've had this TV since late May, and have noticed the lines all along. At first I thought the problem was just isolated to the 360, but recently I have noticed it on a PS2 and on my Wii running 480p. For some reason, when I switch my 360's output to 1080i they are considerably less noticable. I have actually kept it there for the last two months, but I haven't turned it back to 720p to see if the lines are "less noticeable" like some people are saying happens over time. Anyway please keep us updated on Vizio's responses.
And this question mainly goes to Jaye71 since you spent so much time using the screen cleaner. After getting a little IR, I decided to run it for awhile. The manual says that after an hour of running the cleaner the TV will automatically turn off. I was going out of town for a day, so I decided to turn it on before I left thinking it would turn off in an hour. However when I got back about 12 hours later, I found that it was still running. Now maybe I'm imagining it, but it seems like the image is slightly warmer. I adjusted to screen temperature a little to compensate. But did you notice anything like this since you ran it for so long? Is it possible that the peachish color of the screen cleaner could tint the screen?
Has anyone confirmed that the higher end Vizio plasma remotes with the zoom & aspect ratio buttons works on the 32"?

What type of dvd player are you using? Is it at least a progessive scan hooked with component? or Is it an upconverting DVD via HDMI? or is it the old style dvd player hooked up via composite?

Sony upscaling HDMI dvd player that I set @ 720p today for the break in dvd. It has a zoom function on it, but the damn thing shows a "2X zoom" blue box in the top right corner and it doesn't go away :mad::mad:
The break in DVD has been running since about 8am this morning non stop, I changed it to 720p at about 6pm when I got home and watched about 10 minutes of Transformers DVD to try to get it to zoom. I will leave it running overnight as well as threw the weekend to thoroughly break in the set
litwick87 07-11-08, 02:23 AM Also does anyone have any answers to the questions I asked on the previous page?
Best break-in settings, times, options etc?
Best self-calibration software (hook up computer to tv), DVD, Starter settings?
any other good info that I wont have to re-read the whole thread for?
thanks for anyhelp guys.
Also for the people that have had this set since launch any long-term updates? IR, Burn-in etc?

Hey, there they are!!
darkrocker 07-11-08, 12:07 PM I ended up picking up a LN32A450. So far, it has been a solid performer. After getting a service plan, it was actually only $127 more. I will admit, the Vizio still has amazing PQ for the price, but the new unit is pretty much equal for me, with much better sound to boot.

Uhh... Sure. Any chance this was a quote that went a little haywire?
Hey noj11jon,
I haven't really noticed any color change in my TV from running the image cleaner, and I have run it quite often. Usually, for about an hour once every other week. I did however, run it for long periods of time when I had some severe IR from a station logo with no ill effects. It did finally go away, so it wasn't burn-in, but it took several weeks and probably about 20 hours of the image cleaner to get it to go away completely.
Bill1313 07-11-08, 07:34 PM I was in my local Wal-Mart today & I noticed that they lowered the price to
$528.00 so it should'nt be too long before it's under $500.00
Ah. Decisions, decisions....
I too ordered the LN32A450 (a Samsung LCD), but I got an email saying that it will be back-ordered for a while. So, it's back to the drawing board again.
Here's my quandry:
Plasma
Pro: Great blacks
Pro: Great off-axis color
Pro: Cheap (the 32" Vizio, that is)
Con: Sucks down more power and presumably creates more heat
Con: Image retention. Maybe. Depends who you ask.
Con: Less resolution as compared to a similarly sized LCD
Con: Weirdbeard native res that may not be computer friendly
vs.
LCD
Con: Not so great blacks
Con: Iffy off-axis color
Con: Mo' money
Pro: Less power hungry
Pro: Virtually no image retention or burn-in worries
Pro: More resolution
Pro: Standard VESA resolution
And, to make things more complicated, I'm going to be using the display in a fairly unusual application: Watching "TV" while exercising. I say "TV" because I'll actually be watching a computer that is playing recorded videos of TV shows and stuff. I'm technically going to be using it as a computer display, but not really, since I'm going to be mostly watching vids from across the room. Just like a normal "TV".
So, how does that affect how important the various pros and cons are? Let's see:
Blacks and general PQ: Important. But not vitally so. 7 out of 10.
Off axis viewing: Quite important I think. But I will have a tilt-swivel mount. Hmm. 7 out of 10 again?
Cost: Cheap is better, but we're only talking 80 bucks or so. 5 out of 10?
Power consumption: Not too important. 4 out of 10.
Image retention: Important. I'll be viewing the GUI (http://xbmc.org/media/screenshots/) quite a bit. 8 out of 10.
Resolution: I'll be 8-10 feet away, so 5 out of 10.
Square pixels: Not sure. I suspect this could be a deal breaker. 9 out of 10? But it might be a non-issue. A 0 out 10. Sigh.
Yep, it looks like a dead heat to me. I guess I'll cancel my LCD order and at least try the Vizio. The biggest possible drawbacks would seem to be the possible IR, and the weird resolution. And both of those might turn out to be no big deal.
iainuki 07-12-08, 12:04 AM Get the LCD, the IR on this TV is significant.
Bud-man 07-12-08, 09:17 AM I have a 27" Akai LCD with builtin DVD player in my bedroom, the DVD player wont accepta dvd and is a slot loader, so i was thinking of returning it to Costco's, it is grandfathered in the umlimited return policy, so i'll be in $800.
This lil plasma might be what i'm looking for, my son wants one too for his 360 but all this news here about IR and the better chance he'll tip it over and crack the glass have me wondering.
Get the LCD, the IR on this TV is significant.
What do you base this on? Was it from you purchasing one, what you saw on a display model or from what you are reading from other owners? From what I have seen it is not all that bad. With a proper break in period and settings, IR should not be much of of an issue here.
I would be more concerned with the lines via the component video inputs. That seems to be am almost universal issue with this set. Is there anyone out there who is not experiencing this? I think noticed it for a brief moment at the store display but it was elusive enough to where I was almost second guessing myself that it was really even there. If it is on all sets, does it improve the longer you have the set? The one I saw was probably running 24 hours a day.

Well I would not be too concerned with the resolution issue if you plan on using it almost exclusively for video. If you plan on doing a lot of desktop work with static images on the screen for hours, then you might have an issue with IR but the picture quality advantage is so significant on the plasma.
The best way I have found to set up a Media Center PC to connect to a TV such as this is, get a NVidia card and make sure it is HDCP compliant. Then you will have the option to output TV resolutions such as 720p. You can then adjust the overscan in the NVidia settings. I went through all kinds of hair pulling with my 1365x768 Pioneer plasma when trying to find the best way to set up my HTPC. Using the 720p output was by far they best way I found and your video will look great.
The Vizio LCDs are 1366x768 and even if they can accept their native resolution (my Pioneer would not) sometimes it can be tricky getting your PC to output that as they all want to default to 1360x768.
On the power consumption, have you compared readings from the two sets you are considering? Power consumption on plasmas has improved quite a bit and really depends on the model so I would not just assume that the LCD you are looking at will consume way less power than the plasma.
I have not seen this talked about in this thread unless I just missed it. How is the internal digital tuner in this set? This would be the most important feature for me if I were to purchase this TV. The TV it would replace is only connected to my rooftop antenna so I would like to know how well it is able to pull in digital stations and what the picture quality is.
Also how are the speakers? They seem smaller and more hidden than the other Vizios so I am curious about how they sound.
litwick87 07-13-08, 03:41 AM any word on what some good initial settings for this thing are?
or any good DIY calibration disks, utilities etc?
iainuki 07-13-08, 04:20 AM What do you base this on? Was it from you purchasing one, what you saw on a display model or from what you are reading from other owners? From what I have seen it is not all that bad. With a proper break in period and settings, IR should not be much of of an issue here.
I own the TV and I've been breaking it in the last week or so. It's probably at around 75+ hours. I notice a lot of IR.

They're very quiet. Very difficult to hear if you have any kind of noise in your living room. I have a loud air conditioner and it's sometimes hard to hear the TV over it, even at maximum volume.
blazerqb11 07-13-08, 05:47 AM Is anyone with the 42 inch model experiencing the lines problem with component inputs or is it just the 32 inch model?
Anyone? It would be highly interesting if only people with the 32 inch model were experienceing this problem. Is any one with either model sure they are not experiencing this problem?
awesomefabulous 07-13-08, 10:07 AM I was out of town for a long time but I was previously very active in this thread. I am just about to leave to go to Wal*Mart to exchange the 32" for another one. I do not have any significant IR at all (perhaps you guys are cranking that contrast too high?) and no lines with component. I do however have a slight purple discoloration in the upper-left hand corner that is bothersome enough to me to warrant switching it out. I guess I am taking a gamble based on the problems other people are having but unless this TV is totally pleasing I'll just stick to an old non-HD CRT. Experiences with the second vizio coming later.

I disagree with the beginning of this statement. I live in an apartment without A/C so we run multiple fans full blast very often, and I have never gone over 75% of the volume level for it to be deafeningly loud.

I've noticed the same thing too. It's been around 75-100 hours and IR is still present. Do you have the lines on the component setting like everybody else?

Yes, they have not faded at all. I'm going to buy a VGA adapter for my Xbox to circumvent it.
blazerqb11 07-13-08, 10:25 PM This looks to me like interference that is picked up somewhere. Wonder if putting ferrites on the power cord or component cables would help it.

Would you by any chance be willing to try yrly's suggestion? It would be nice to know if that would help at all.
I wonder if the lines are more likely to appear with a xbox 360 or ps3; this is a pretty interesting article (http://www.ce-mag.com/archive/02/11/may.html).
mr_america_117 07-14-08, 02:55 AM I wonder if the lines are more likely to appear with a xbox 360 or ps3
It doesn't matter which system. There are people running DVD players through component cables and have the same problem.
The lines are still there and vizio has still yet to respond to my second email about it. I can't figure out how to fix this interference, and it's definitely the set, I sure hope that Vizio comes out with a firmware update or something...
drum714 07-14-08, 11:05 AM I've been running my dvd plyer through Component video, and have been getting the funky lines. This weekend I swapped it to run through Composite cables(red, white, yellow only) and have yet to seen the lines and PQ is fairly comprable. this confuses me altogether. My Component Vid Cabels are a better quality cable than my cheapy composite cables and yet there is no interferance in the composite cables, which leads me to believe that It is a hardware issue on the TV, but with the component imput and not the Composite.
Is there any difference between composite and component video cables(harware wise) other than the actual information they carry. Would it be feasable to hook up a set of composite cables in place of the component video cables to see if it is my cables, or the imput on the TV causing the lines in my display?
Off thet topic and on to a new one.
I have about 100 hours on my set and am still having a heavy amount of IR. No burn in at all , but if I bring up the TV menu to change a setting I can still see the box outline for 5-10 minutes when vewing darker movies. My Brightness and contrast levels have been in the low 40's for my entire break-in and I have been running the image cleaner for 2 hours every night but I am still getting a fair amount of IR.
I'm still stoked with the set as a whole, especialy when I just saw a few clips of movies on my friends LCD that was compleetly pixilated and looked like absolute crap compaired to my set that cost $250 less.
tsteph69 07-14-08, 12:59 PM I too have experienced the problems with component. I actually did quite a bit of extensive troubleshooting as well. I returned the set twice, and all 3 sets had the issue to varying degrees. The one that I have now has it the worst, I think, but the panorama mode actually works on this one. (Only one out of 3, the rest it was the same as Wide) I tried multiple different sources for component out at varying resolutions (XBox, 2 DvD players, Direct TV VP722) and all components show the hum bars. I went a step further and hooked everything up to a UPS for a server thinking that the unit might be unusually susceptable to mains interference, but they were still present. (The UPS effectively isolates the components entirely from the AC mains and uses a remodulated sine wave). I placed two calls to Vizio and neither representative would aknowledge that this was a known issue with the set. I find this impossible to believe with the amount of complaints on here. They just offered to set me up with an in home service call per the warranty or have me exchange it out at the store. None of the above component sources show any interference on my Panny PZ80U. The PQ on the set is amazing, it does blow away all of the LCD's that were on the shelf around it. Image retention is pretty significant on this set, though, even after about 75 hours of break-in on the last one. I may keep it for a couple on months then exchange it before my return policy runs out to see if the QC over at Vizio matures any. Anyone else attempt to troubleshoot the lines issue yet? It seems to be most prevalent at 480p and 720p and least prevalent at 480i and 1080i, at least on the 3 that I have had an experience with so far. (I also, during the process of exchanging these, wound up with one set that had been opened and returned, wouldn't even display the menu, and had the home screen for an XBox burned into the screen, I didn't count it here as it wouldn't even display an image.)
Also, for what it's worth, on two of the sets the lines were more prevalent at the top of the image and on one it was more at the bottom. Lines also seem to disappear on blue backgrounds.
The odd thing is that I hooked the last set up at WalMart before I took it out of the store to their store feed via component and didn't notice the lines. (I was looking hard for them too. Their store feed broadcasts in 1080i)
litwick87 07-14-08, 01:50 PM I didn't get the lines using component cables with a 360. I did however only play for a few minutes. I will try again when I go home (I was afraid of IR/BI becuase that was during the first few hours of use. Now with close to ~100hrs of solid break-in dvd I'll give it another shot and let you guys know.
litwick87 07-14-08, 07:35 PM Anyone having any trouble hooking up a computer to the TV? I'm trying to hookup my MacBook Pro using a DVI->HDMI cable. and a split audio cable from the headphone out on the computer, all going into HDMI slot 3 on the Vizio.
The computer detects the display. I tried using all sorts of combinations of output resolution / TV resolution. I can get the TV to go black and play a bit of the audio of the movie, but then it will turn off and say either "No Signal" or "No Support"
any ideas?
rtpatterson 07-14-08, 10:44 PM I have the 42 inch version, had it about 3 weeks have about 150hrs on it. No lines at all and no IR either, maybe I just got a good one, The only things are that it has a very slight humm to it (room has to be dead quiet to hear it) and it runs hot, you can actually feel it throwing off heat from the screen. Overall a really good deal for the extra $200, it's no Panny or Samsung but it is working great in my kids downstairs playroom.
tsteph69 07-14-08, 11:45 PM Doesn't sound like the lines are an issue with the 42's from the posts I've read, seems like it is limited to the 32's.
blazerqb11 07-15-08, 12:37 AM It doesn't matter which system. There are people running DVD players through component cables and have the same problem.
I was aware of that but I was just curious if it appeared more often while using something generating a lot of powerful high frequency signals. It is just really odd... It would make more sense if it was all the analog inputs, maybe they added the one component input as an afterthought and did not properly shield it. Does anyone have a clue what could be causing it?

I believe only certain HDMI ports will accept a DVI signal(or it could just be a non-ATSC). The last TV I had would only accept a DVI signal from the computer on HDMI port 1. I would try hooking it up to all the different HDMI ports and try looking in the manual for any info on the subject. I am not entirely sure on this, but it can't really hurt to try. The website (http://www.vizio.com/products/detail.aspx?pid=58) says it can accept a computer signal from HDMI "Computer: 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1366x768 via RGB and HDMI".

This is just a wild stab in the dark but I wonder if these problems, the IR especially and maybe also the component lines, have something to do with having to produce smaller pixels, which was supposed to be a problem with plasma TVs. Either way, if this problem only exists with the 32" model, that is one more reason to get the 42" version.
I am in no way trying to undermine owner's problems with the component video input on the TV set. I am not an owner (yet) so I can only speak from my viewing experience of display models. I have gone to multiple Wal-Mart stores and all had the TV hooked up w/ component video cables. I only thought I saw "the lines" at one location but was not for sure because it was so brief.
Could owners of the set please explain in more detail these lines they are seeing. Are they present all the time or just randomly where you have to watch carefully for an extended amount of time? Have people tried multiple sources using component video? It seems most people reporting these issues are using the XBox 360.
So far every display unit I have seen (a total of three) have been hooked up to an HD feed via component video. Each time I was very impressed with the picture considering the source. The strange thing is today I went to a new store and they had the 42" (422) and 32" right next to each other and the black level on the 32" seemed far superior. I know there are many things that could affect this and the previous 42" I saw seemed to have very deep blacks. The funny thing was when I came back the next day to see that display 42" with the deep blacks, it had completely malfunctioned and was no longer able to produce a picture (I tried).
I know these TVs are extremely cheap so I guess it is a crap shoot if you get a good set. I was able to crank up the speakers on a 32" model and at 60-70% it seemed more than efficient than I would ever need to drown out my treadmill. Thankfully I still have young ears that I have not abused.
I would still love to hear from any users who have tried the internal digital tuner. This is a huge deal to me and I have yet to see any poster comment on this. So if you are using or have the ability to test using a decent antenna, please post on your impressions of the digital tuner on this TV. Thank you AVSers
STEELERSRULE 07-15-08, 12:29 PM Does Vizio also make the Inginia 32" Plasma model found at Best Buy?
I was just curious because I saw, and fiddled with one yesterday.
The menu's were almost identical(except there appeared to be NO sort of IR wiper that you guys mention0, and the display banner is EXACTLY the same as the one used by Vizio.
The set was cheaper(about $40) and appeared to have everything that the Vizio lacks, especially with regards to the remote(direct input buttons, Aspect Ratio changing button which also had 3 modes for HD source unlike the Vizio, Picture, Color Temp. for some reason, Freeze button, plus others I don't exactly remember).
Had a real nice picture(colors and blacks of course), but with all the problems people are experiencing with the Vizio I have decided to stay away and go with an LCD from one of the big 3 or 4. Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, or Toshiba(oh yes, and Sharp).
Just curious if anyone knew.

Insignia and Vizio often have very similar sets, as they're typically rebadged LGs.
In general I'd expect the black level, brightness, image retention, and overall picture quality to be very similar if not exactly the same as the Vizio. If it doesn't suffer from the same bugs, it sounds like a very good alternative to Vizio.

try this site. its settings for the vx37 model but might just help you out.

tsteph69 07-15-08, 11:20 PM The bars do seem to have faded some with break in, but now I notice them on the antenna input as well. May try the Isignia. Wonder if there is any difference in build quality between the Visio and the Isignia. The Isignia does have more inputs. (One extra s-vid, composite, and component) but a few less picture controls (custom white balance, white limiting, black enhancement) and no screen cleaner.
litwick87 07-15-08, 11:58 PM Hello,
Here are the settings I got using DVE.
Brightness = 43
Contrast = 50
Color = 34
Tint = 2
Sharpness = 0
Color Temp = cool
DNR = Medium
Black Level Extender = On
White Peak Limiter = On
CTI = Off
Flesh Tone = On
Adaptive Luma = Off
Can someone test this settings out and let me know if I need further adjustments?
Thanks,
tmtang64
Thanks for this, I'll run this for a while and see how it fares.
awesomefabulous 07-16-08, 01:35 AM Either Vizio dropped a batch of bad TVs or there is some other variable to consider. On my second set (switched out because of a purple discoloration in the corner) I got one with perfect picture and I just tested the component input and there are NO LINES.
Same Wii, same Nyko cables, same setup and everything, and a different Vizio from the same Wal*Mart 2.5 weeks later gives no lines. Now that that purple is gone, this set is just too sweet of a deal.

Custom white balance is useful. White limiting and black enhancement are useless. Screen cleaner is fine but you could find other ways to accomplish the same thing.
tsteph69 07-16-08, 02:07 AM The Isignia also doesn't specify a panel life, called them and they don't have a spec for it either. They did confirm that it is an LG panel coupled with Insignia electronics so I would assume that it would have to have the same 60,000 hr spec.
mr_america_117 07-16-08, 05:41 PM UPDATE! THE LINES HAVE GOTTEN WORSE.
Now I see both the fixed set of lines and now a new set of moving lines that go up and down and fill up the whole TV. This wasn't like this yesterday playing CoD4 on XBL...
I'll try to take a picture or film a video if I have time tonight...I've been so busy lately...
If this happening only over component then why not use HDMI?
litwick87 07-16-08, 07:03 PM I just played GTA4 for a while and noticed the lines to, but they are really faint and I didn't notice them until I tried
tsteph69 07-16-08, 08:31 PM Well, finally had it with the Vizio, went to Best Buy and talked to the manager and they price matched WalMart with the Isignia. (knocked off $19) Bought the 4 year extended warranty (3 years extra really as it starts today and overrides the man. warranty) for an extra $89 .Brought it home, lots more inputs and no lines on any input. It has the exact same LG panel. Much better remote too, as well as a cinema mode that fills the screen much nicer on full screen content. The only thing that it is lacking is manual white balance and a screen cleaner. (not an issue since you could clean it with the break-in dvd) For the guys with the line problems give the Isignia a shot. Before I left to return it I called Vizio and gave them one more shot to at least aknowledge the issue but they insisted that they are getting no calls regarding this problem.
tsteph69 07-16-08, 08:32 PM If this happening only over component then why not use HDMI?
Many people have 480p dvd players (like the one that is built in to my bedroom surround sound system) or consoles etc. that don't support HDMI. If that's the solution, why even put component ins on the tv in the first place. It also showed up on the antenna in on the last one that I had.
Bill1313 07-17-08, 09:14 AM For people that own this tv I would hope that EVERYONE IS CALLING VIZIO to let them know of this problem & it probably would'nt hurt to send Vizio & Wal-Mart this thread that way maybe Vizio will do something to fix the problem.

I guess the question is how wide spread is the problem? One poster returned his and his new one doesn't have that problem anymore, but on the other hand one poster gave it three shots and still it existed.
I guess the only way would have people test out their sets if they aren't using components to just switch it over for a bit and see if there is an overwhelming problem or just a select batch that got bit with the bug.
And with the ones that are having the component issue I would look at the manufactured Date and see if their's is similiar to the other ones having a problem.
drum714 07-17-08, 11:55 AM I do get lines on both my component and composite settings. The lines on the component channel are alot more pronounces and are pevelent on the top and gragually fad as they work down the screen. These lines are only on the top 2/3 of the screen. the lines on the composite channel are very very subtle and they only take up the bottom 1/3.
Could there be any coralation between the two chanels showing lines on the top 2/3(component) and bottom 1/3(composite)?
As of right now I have my DVD plyer hooked up via composite and because of how subtle the lines are I can only see the lines on a blank black screen. This doesn't bother me for normal vewing at all, and eventually I will get a DVD player with HDMI so the lines won't be an issue at all.
My biggest issue with this set is how quickly IR occurs. I can pull up the TV menu and turn on the image cleaner and by the time the cleaner starts, I already have a IR box from the menu. This usually effect veiwing in darker sceens, but it is annoying none the less. I have about 100 hours of actuall TV time and probobly another 50 hours of running the image cleaner. My settings are very simmilar to many of the settings posted with none of them higher than 50%. Do you for-see the IR lessening anytime soon or are there any more steps that I can take to help eliminate IR. I don't use or have a break-in DVD, but I am carefull to watch all full screen content and whenever I see any amount of IR I run the Image Cleaner when I'm done watching the TV. Thanks for the help.
FWIW the picture on this set is amazing for the $550 price tag, or even a $1000 price tag for that matter.
tsteph69 07-17-08, 12:37 PM I sent Vizio an email re. this and also included this message thread. I also cc'd their director of marketing.

If you look at the antenna input, you probably have them there as well. It is easier to see them sometimes by looking off-angle at the picture.
cesslinger 07-17-08, 01:25 PM I am glad that I have not seen the lines yet. I feel that the IR is at an acceptable level for this TV. The only time I really notice it is when I play Ninja Gaiden 2. I can only see the HUD for about 2 or 3 min if the scene is dark, but if it is colorful, I don't see a thing. I watched the Allstar baseball game via the Qam tuner, it was really, really nice.
EscapeVelocity 07-17-08, 01:54 PM How is the 32" Vizio Plasma crowd doing?
drum714 07-17-08, 01:56 PM If you look at the antenna input, you probably have them there as well. It is easier to see them sometimes by looking off-angle at the picture.
I only use a set of crappy rabbit ears for all my regular TV veiwing, and thus far I havn't seen the lines on the antena imput yet.
I'm new to the whole Plasma TV thing so mabey the amount of IR i'm getting is fairly normal, but is sure seems to happen quickly, though it is only veiwable on darker screens.
awesomefabulous 07-17-08, 02:39 PM On my new one I have found I have a slightly lighter small area about the diameter of a small button in the middle area, but it is only visible when switching inputs and such and only if you look for it. I probably won't bother switching this one out unless it gets worse before I move in a month (since I'll be boxing it up anyway). The purple-ish was unbearable, this is basically unnoticable unless you are scrutanizing the TV.
As for the IR, I agree it is VERY pronounced until you age it a bit, but on my last one I had it on every minute I was in my home and used the break-in SVCD when I left for shorter periods of time and when I returned it in ~3 weeks the temporary IR was basically non-existent. One thing I do notice with this new set is it seems significantly brighter (high 30s brightness is closer to what low 40s was on the last one), so perhaps that is causing some more residue.
tsteph69 07-17-08, 03:02 PM I agree about the IR once the set has aged some. On the last one that I returned, the IR was almost unnoticable anymore after 100 hours or so of the break-in DVD. The IR on the Insignia seems pretty much identical.
cesslinger 07-17-08, 08:41 PM I had one of these that had a bad pixel, I did use the break in dvd on that one before I swapped it out for the one I have now. I said heck with that dvd, went straight to gaming on it. I have not had anything close to burn in, all IR is gone within 2-3 min of full screen viewing. And MassEffect is awesome on this set.

You know what..that's not a bad idea...we have a LG 37 inch LCD in the living room (700:1 contrast) from BB, and when I go back to Wal-Mart, and the next set has these messed up lines on the component settings, I'm going to Best Buy in two weeks. Hell, I'd get some pretty good reward-zone points for that!!
mr_america_117 07-18-08, 12:34 AM which Insignia did you buy? The Plasma or the LCD? The LCD has a 1500:1 contrast ratio, that's not that bad..(I assume you got a 32 incher...)
Buckeye911 07-18-08, 01:51 AM You do all realize that stated contrast ratios are totally useless. There are no industry standards so everyone is pretty much free to say whatever they want.
noney123 07-18-08, 09:58 AM I haven't posted anything in a while, but I've been following this thread. I've had it with the speedy IR on my set. It's well past the 200 hour mark but still IR appears within seconds of any static image. It's true that the IR does go away after some full-screen viewing but it's come to a point that I have to be overbearing and a PITA to anyone else who wants to watch something on the TV by making sure they only watch programs in full-screen(and no bright logos). That, and the constant fear of burn-in, have made up my mind for me to go with an LCD(tonight). I'm a little disappointed that I will be sacrificing the amazing PQ this set has, but I have to compromise on something. I will definitely pick up a plasma later on when the technology progresses to the point where the IR issue is minimal.
You guys have been a great source of information. Thanks!!
awesomefabulous 07-18-08, 11:27 AM Does anyone know how to tell if the small lighter area on my TV is a bright pixel or not? I'll try to take a pic of it then but I couldn't find any pics of a birght pixel on google.

a bright pixel is usually a pixel that is stuck on one color. Now there are variations of a bright for example it the pixel will display all other colors but black. I had this happen to me just returned it to Wal-Mart and walked out with another one.

Oh, I thought bright pixels were different from stuck or dead pixels. I had no idea the terms were interchangeable.
tsteph69 07-18-08, 01:05 PM which Insignia did you buy? The Plasma or the LCD? The LCD has a 1500:1 contrast ratio, that's not that bad..(I assume you got a 32 incher...)
I got the plasma, the picture is beautiful and it uses the same panel as the Vizio.
seanw343 07-18-08, 09:19 PM I need help calibrating this tv.. i just bought it moments ago.. I really only need it for my 360... but what are the best settings
the regular settings seem okay but i hope i can find something to make it a little bit better
one thing i am noticing is during ncaa 09 for the 360 during screens it goes black for a second... like a transparent black.. i can still see the player models and what not but it just goes black...

I can completely relate to your frustration, but please understand it's not the technology that's at issue, but rather this particular display. Plasma technology is very much "there" with no more IR or burn in. However this display was built to a certain price point and therefore did not avail itself of the existing technology simply due to cost constraints.
mr_america_117 07-18-08, 10:13 PM I got the plasma, the picture is beautiful and it uses the same panel as the Vizio.
How's the IR? I'm pretty concerned about this, I don't care if it's 720p and not 1080p (even thought I think the Vizio is not completely 1080p)
I'm pretty much convinced now to get one...poor Vizio, I wanted to like you...
blazerqb11 07-18-08, 10:44 PM Oh, I thought bright pixels were different from stuck or dead pixels. I had no idea the terms were interchangeable.
Bright pixels and stuck pixels are the same defect however dead pixels are different. Thus bright and stuck can be used interchangeably but dead pixels refer to a totally dark pixel that is incapable of any light. Stuck pixels can sometimes be repaired and will on occasion go away on their own while dead pixels are generally permanent.

It's really a non-issue to me. It gets less and less as the set ages, and isn't that much of an issue to begin with. Unnoticable at all during normal viewing, plus this set has good options to get rid of the black bars.

To be honest, unless you are completely unwilling to tolerate a break-in period or you will only ever play games with non-transparent HUDs every time you turn the TV on, it really isn't that bad. I watch Mystery Science Theater 3000 on mine, and the black chairs that are at the bottom of the screen for most of the show disappear in-between segments (~3-5 minutes). Mine is about 100 hours in if I had to guess.

If you need to buy one, where does one acquire it, and what does it do?

I was pretty careful with my current Vizio, I never played GTA IV for too long and when I had it on pause when I'd go to the bathroom or eat dinner or whatever, I'd turn the TV off, I was extra careful...
But I think I'm sick of it...the IR is pretty bad, I have my dashboard up for 1 minute and I see IR...a couple of times I'd go into the TV's menu and go out of it a minute later and the outline of the menu box was IR'ed there. I had to go clean it up with the image cleaner because it was so distracting...

Not necessarily. These Vizios seem to be exhibit IR pretty quickly but many other plasmas do not. I've had my Panasonic plasma for two and a half years and have never had a problem with IR. I'll see IR after watching a movie with black bars but it's gone in seconds when I switch to programming that fills the screen. I do some gaming on my PS3 and it's the same story, I get IR but it disappears in seconds. I have a friend whose had his Panny plasma for one year and he hasn't had any problems either. My uncle has Pioneer and Hitachi plasmas and has never had IR last more than a minute or two on the Hitachi and never any on the Pioneer.
BTW, I love your antenna thread. You must really have a passion for OTA reception. You sure put a lot of effort into it and have a ton of information posted. Thanks.
EscapeVelocity 07-19-08, 09:27 PM It was interesting and fun, and we have gotten to the bottom of the question....What are the best indoor antennas? And Ive done my small but useful contribution to the betterment of mankind. Perhaps I will forever be known as the Indoor Antenna Guru.
Cant wait to get the Satellite going again. ;)
PS -- Ive been looking to get a used 7th or 8th or 9th generation Panny Commercial 37" or 42" ED Plasma Monitor, but they havent been at much of a discount to later generation units at higher resolution....Heck you can get a Vizio 42" plasma any day of the week for $750.
My fall back position is the Vizio 32" Plasma or a Sharp LCD.
veyladrone 07-19-08, 10:11 PM well, a few days after my first post about my "super speedy IR" issues on 6-28-08 i exchanged mine for the same model, hoping that maybe my set was just goofed up.
Though i still notice some easily set in IR after a few minutes of something rather bright and static on my screen, it disappears within seconds (the health bar for Ninja Gaiden 2, for example).
My first set was ridiculous. Literally after 2-3 seconds of having a brighter image on the screen it would stay there for a fair amount of time, long enough to ruin darker movies or games (as i mentioned in the first post).
I am completely satisfied with this 2nd unit, and plan on keeping it unless something drastic happens. My experience with this TV is my very first experience with Plasma, and going through it has led me to a few questions that if someone could answer or point me to a thread with the answers on these forums id be very thankful:
1. Is the quick IR that i was experiencing an issue with the actual display panel of the TV or an issue with something else in the TV, like a motherboards or whatever else these things have on the inside?
2. Since the first set was super fast on having IR, does that mean permanent burn in could have set in much faster as well?
3. What in the world does the "fine tuning" adjustment for the picture do exactly? I have this slider in the picture menu only for VGA input, which is what i run my 360 through. I see no difference or changes in anything having it at 0 or at the maximum of 31, and the manual doesnt really elaborate what it does. Anyone here know?

Same here, but not as bad. A minute of the PS3 dashboard and I could see most of my SOCOM backround on the TV when I load up a game with a black screen in the backround..

I hope on Thursday when I'm off from work I'll get a good second set from Wal-Mart...
Maybe we all got bad first waves of these sets....after all, these are Vizio's first plasmas now...they've been doing LCD's for a while, maybe they had problems with plasma....
PeterPP 07-21-08, 08:41 AM I got my 50 inch 1080p Vizio plasma about two weeks ago and I see no IR nor any burn ins and hope it stays that way! Overall, I'm very happy with it.

Good to hear you're happy with the TV :) The Fine tuning adjustments seems to be the phase adjustment of the signal. I don't have a VP322, but on my VX20 the small fonts and the desktop icons looks a tiny little sharper (the "blur" is about 1 pixel wide to begin with) when it's at the correct setting when feeding 1366x768 from my computer.

Nah, Vizio has been making plasmas for years. Since 2005, I think.

hmm strange, that article states that he hooked up his computer via HDMI. My tv would not accept the DVI-HDMI cable I was using. Maybe I will try again using all different ports and different resolutions.
So does anyone game on 360? If so, how does it look, I plan to use VGA to avoid any of those "lines" I hear about on component. Any noticeable IR after break-in/100 hours?

IR is unavoidable with this TV. You just have to get used to pulling up the image cleaner after playing.

Now do you think the image quality over a LCD makes up for this pain in the butt?

If I played more video games I would probably return it for an LCD. I mostly watch movies and the IR is very forgivable for that. I've gone up and down with the TV over the last few weeks and I've decided to keep it. It's not a gaming TV though.

This tv is awesome for video games when used carefully. Everything pops right out at you. I just finished Mass Effect yesterday, the ending sequence looked fantastic.
So then how long does image cleaner take and how effective is it? I either taking this Vizio or this Dynex at Best Buy: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8632553&type=product&id=1194052042159
Any suggestions on which I should take?
Hello all,
First off, my VP322 is still doing great.
IR is hardly noticeable now, even after extended gaming usage.
7 Hours straight of Rock Band, and there is a bit of IR, but watching anything else for 30 minutes or so, eliminates it entirely.
Still using a PS3 over HDMI and analog cable.
For people with lines and anomalies over Component input, have you tried the 'Auto Phase' option described on page 56 in the Owner's Manual?
I have not hooked anything to it via Component, so I'm not sure if it will help, or alleviate your issues, but it is worth a try at least.
My VP322 gets a constant workout in my home.
I have no idea how many hours are on it now, but I don't worry about IR at all any more.
It still is there, but MUCH less noticible than when my sat was new.
It also goes away almost shockingly fast now as well.
2 Hours of gaming will leave a bit of IR.
10 Minutes of Image Cleaner later and you cant find a trace of IR at all.
This set will be going into my Bedroom, and will be replaced in the living room with the Vizio VP422 as soon as I can afford one.
Glad to hear it's still going strong. Every know and then I still wonder if I shouldn't have gone with the VP32 over the VO32. don't get me wrong I LOVE my VO but everytime I'm in Wal-Mart I always swing by and pay it a visit and damn that's a great Picture. Plus I think my wife would have liked it better seeing how she get eye fatigue on the LCD.

Maybe I will try again using all different ports and different resolutions.I was using a DVI-HDMI adapter and it worked about the same as VGA, maybe a little cleaner with the digital signal. The VIZIO locked to several different resolutions but nothing above 1366x768 I think. 1280x720 is the closest match to the panel's native resolution. Make sure you've toggled your PC over to external monitor mode (if it's a laptop). And also, make sure it's a DVI-D (DVI digital) output on your PC, not DVI-Analog.

If it works with a DVI-VGA adapter, then that sounds like you may have a DVI analog output which is very different than DVI-Digital. DVI-Analog cannot be converted to HDMI without an actual active video processor - can't be done with a simple adapter or cable.
If you have a DVI-I output (DVI Integrated) then it should actually carry both the digital and analog signals over DVI, and a DVI to HDMI adapter should work. On my specific PC (a Dell laptop using a Dell docking station), plugging in VGA and DVI/HDMI gave me a choice of 3 different monitors when I used Fn-F8 to toggle between displays - the integrated LCD screen, the VGA output and the DVI-D to HDMI output. I got best results using 1280x720 (720p) resolution on the PC.
BTW, I was using the HDMI 3 input (top one) as that's the only HDMI input with separate analog audio input, and that's the one specifically recommended to use with DVI sources. I would guess that this may be the only one you can use with a PC with DVI out. Is that the input you used for testing or were you using HDMI 1 or 2?
BTW, if you want to see the various DVI output connectors to verify which you have, check out the wikipedia DVI page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface) (toward the bottom).

boylan13 07-23-08, 01:15 PM I would still love to hear from any users who have tried the internal digital tuner. This is a huge deal to me and I have yet to see any poster comment on this. So if you are using or have the ability to test using a decent antenna, please post on your impressions of the digital tuner on this TV. Thank you AVSers
The ATSC tuner on this puppy is excellent. After the review, I bought the set directly from VIZIO for a friend in dire need of a new TV and we just mounted it up on his wall last night. I was worried that we wouldn't get great reception because he's in an old apartment building with thick plaster and brick walls and on the exact wrong side of the building to have a direct line of sight to the broadcast tower on the Empire State Building (his windows face the opposite direction).
But I hooked up an Antennas Direct PF7 Picture Frame antenna and with very specific placement in position and angle of this antenna on a bookshelf, we were able to get all of the New York City digital broadcast channels including the PBS channels which are notoriously weak. In fact, I could place that little antenna almost anywhere and get NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, UPN and the ION channels. It was only the PBS channels that required some finagling of antenna position. Picture quality on the HD channels was exceptionally good and the SD channels were OK as well. He had been thinking about getting cable but after seeing the quality and selection of channels available free from the antenna signal, he decided he didn't need it.
Needless to say, upgrading from an old 19 inch CRT whose picture was slowly collapsing to the VP322, he is now one happy camper. :)
Later,

I had the Vizio and experienced problems on the analog inputs on 3 of them before trying this Insignia set. It uses the same LG plasma panel as the Vizio with a better remote, more inputs, better picture scaling and no more lines on the component input. I did like the manual white balance and the screen cleaner on the Vizio though. I would take either of the two plasmas over that Dynex LCD, they are FAR superior in regards to picture quality IMO.
litwick87 07-23-08, 07:11 PM Thanks for the DVI help guys. Looks like I have a DVI-I link (MacBook Pro)
BTW I saw that Insignia at Best Buy I love how it has the rotating stand.
EDIT: looking at the DVI-HDMI cable I have doesn't have the 4 little pins on the corners of the horizontal line that my DVI-VGA connector that came with my computer has. O well the VGA will do until I build my HTPC & Media server

The four pins are only for the analog portion of the DVI-I signal, so they should only be present on the DVI/VGA cable and NOT on the DVI-HDMI cable.
DVI-I basically has all the connectors of DVI-A and DVI-D on the one port, but the cable adapters only use the pins they need for their respective signals.
Not sure why this doesn't work with your mac though. Have you tried this same Mac with other TVs that have HDMI inputs? Any luck there?
It would be interesting to hear if anyone else is able to get their DVI-HDMI link working to this set. I can't believe I'm the only one.
I KNOW THIS LINK IS FOR A DIFFERENT MODEL VIZIO BUT IT MAY HELP EVEYONE OUT WHO IS TRING TO HOOK UP DVI-HDMI WITH A MACBOOK.

Brigaid 07-24-08, 07:36 PM I need help with my xbox 360 setup on this tv. I recently picked up the tv for college and had my xbox 360 hooked up through component cables and optical audio out to my Sony STR-DG510 receiver. I have both the component and HDMI outputs hooked up to the tv from the receiver but only the component shows the video from the xbox 360. when i switch between them, it goes to the HDMI input and shows black with the words "retreiving data..." for 5-10 seconds before going to a blue screen with "no signal!" Can anyone explain why this is happening and what i can do to fix it? Thank you for any help.

You aren't going to get HDMI video out of your Xbox as long as it is outputing via component. You are trying to convert an analog signal to a digital one and that's not going to happen.

What your wife is experiencing is exactly the same problem I have with lcd. They look ok but my eyes hurt and it leads to a headache after an hour or two no matter how it is set. Not just because it is bright. It is due to the fact lcd has a backlight and it is a different type of light source than plasma. No matter how dim I set lcd it still bothers me after a while. It makes sense/ lcd works a lot like stained glass you only see the image because of light coming through it. If you are normally sensitive to flourescent lights than lcd is probablly going to give you simillar problems because the backlight is going to be flourescent or led.
Some people just are that way. Trust me if she is as sensitive to that as I am she will love plasma if you set it up decent- It made all the difference for me. If you guys view in the dark it will surely be easier on both of your eyes. Trust me she will thank you after a week or two with plasma if it is bothering her that bad- and that way you are doing it to help her so that will help with the argument over getting another tv. My girlfriend was glad to see the lcd get sold to my buddy as well- normally she gets mad when I buy a tv which in all fairness is really too often but she says we are keeping the 42" panny plasma I just bought : ) It seems to be mostly people with blue or green eyes from my experience having trouble just like with most outdoor light and sun reflecting off snow.
I think you are going to want a bigger tv after you get used to how soft and pleasing a plasma image is on the eyes. Think about it 40-42's are only a few hundred more or in some cases the same price as 32"lcds right now. unless you just want a 32", 37" and up will give you more of a sense of motion.

Thanks alot for your input, I am going to run that by her. We do our weekly grocery shopping at the Super Wal-Mart so I'll bring her to Vizio Plasma and run it by her. The other solution we have been doing is turning on some more lights in the room which helps her out, but it takes it away from me since I like the look of LCD in a dimly lit room. It really adds to the "punch" but I have to think of both us.
We'll see what happens, I really loved the look of the Vizio VP32 and some of the shortcoming's that some have expeirenced wouldn't affect me. The remote lacking an aspect ratio won't since my comcast remote has one that offers alot of choices, if by chance we got one of the bad batches that showed lines over component, that wouldn't matter even if we did since I have two HDMI's cords and about to purchase a third.
the one thing that sealed the deal for purchasing the VO was I explained to her that if we get the plasma, we are going to have to break it in for over 100 hours and watch alot of stretched SD content, but we'll see if she is more willing to deal with the breaking in period if in the long term her eyes won't be so sensetive to the plasma. She, like myself, HATES the stretched look.
If we do go with the plasma, I am sure going to miss my little VO32, it really is a fantastic set.
Thanks for all your insight because what you experienced sounds exactly what she has.
The break in is not the big issue. You can leave the tv on a few extra hours here and there in stretch mode to ensure the pic fills the screen. this will help the time pass quicker.
10 hrs a day is only week and a half to get to 100 hrs. Besides you usually view more when one is brand new anyway right?
4;3 all the time is not good on any plasma. Mine has a "just" mode that fills the screen but it is not as bad as the H fill mode. If you have to view a LOT of 4:3 with the bars you might want to think about it.
Most plasmas offer gray bars on the sides in 4:3 mode. This is another thing to consider if that would annoy you guys. The black ones are real bad over time. not a big deal if it only a couple hrs once in a while or less than 20% of your total viewing.
I hated to part with my lcd at first too. The plasma convinced me very quickly I made the right decision. Maybe she would let you keep both?? The longer you wait prices are falling everyday.
I honestly found the benefits of plasma especially with my eye situation like your wife has to outweigh the minor issues like 4:3 viewing.
Thanks,
yeah the sci atlanta STB does offer both gray and black bars, which is good. I can live with Zoom2 which is I do believe panaromic for 4:3.
I like your last sentence, Would love to keep the LCD and put in the bedroom.
I am actually excited to go grocery shopping now:D
It's funny though everytime we go I drive her nuts because I always go and visit it, like it is a puppy in a pound. LOL
Yeah if you could go see the tv while she is looking at something else in the store that might give you some alone time to check it out more. My girl always takes longer than I do in the store so I just end up in electronics by default. She knows that's where to find me if I'm missing lol.
I kept one of my lcd's and sold the other to a buddy. Mine is working out good as a bedroom tv. I hardly look at it at all since I got the plasma.
It would suck to return a tv you like that works good.
I never owned a Vizio so I can't say much about them. I like panasonic. I heard they were a pretty good tv and they are a good price too. A buddy has a Vizio lcd and he likes his too.
I think you are going to be surprised how blurry your lcd is going to look after you "adjust" to plasma.
You know you want it. You would not be here asking about the tv if you didn't. If you are ok with vizio I have seen some really good prices at walmart and sams.
Really man take your time and see how the wife feels about a 37"or 40" Vizio has great deals on plasma that size at WM. If you are set on 32" due to space limits. Or you view so much SD content you want to sit further away, or that is just what you want I understand. Personally I waited a long time till I could afford a good tv this go round. You are gonna keep it a long time right? I wanted to make sure I did not want another anytime soon.
Plasma is just so much easier on your eyes you are gonna want bigger if you put it in your living room. For me 42 inches is very satisfying from 7 feet away. Just take your time buying is all I'm saying. You guys are gonna like plasma, especially if lcd is bothering your wife.
You can get a very good picture from plasma at moderate settings- which is how it needs to be set in the dark. The stores almost always have them set at full blast. I hate to say it but trust us here that plasma will make your jaw drop when you get it set up right. Don't judge it by how the store has it set. I'm sure your home is not that bright either.
Good luck, Let us know when you get it! I can tell already it is just a matter of time. A good point to give the wife is it will keep you busy for a while and you will leave her alone about needing another tv for along time, cooking dinner or taking my girl out a little helps me smooth out a tv purchase, I drive mine nuts too so I know the deal. lol
I had to get a buddy to go help haul this one cause her first words were "ANOTHER TV AND IT'S HOW BIG?" when I told her after it was here-is that wrong? I hope not. She got over it quick after we watched 10,000 bc on bluray and said it looked much better in the dark than the now bedroom lcd. She liked the 42" size a lot more than our 32" that was in the living room. Ten inches is a hell of a diffence it looks five times as big.
plasma is more 3d looking you will enjoy looking into the "depths of it" Thats the reason I reccomend bigger, I assume you like the punch or feel of hdtv? I know I do.
That's hysterical, that's exactly what I do whenever we head over to a Wal-Mart or a Sear's, she always say's "Go, I know where to find you".
yeah I really like the Vizio's, for one I love the whole story of how they came to be and how they turned the HDTV world on it's head and made the big boys react. Plus I love the PQ to Value.
I too love Panasonic. their my favorite high end brand. When looking at the 32inch LCD's I came across the new Panasonic 32in, and it blew away the Sammy's ,sony etc. I just couldn't justify spending close to a $1,000's on a 32 inch. just couldn't pull the trigger on that. For the similiarly priced and similiar spec'd 32in. I just feel the Vizio more than holds it's own agains the Samsungs and Sony's, it just really does.
But I think I am going to take your advice about looking at the 42in Vizio Plasma. Going from a 20in CRT to the 32in LCD at first it was like a movie theater, then one day I was watching the Red Sox while laying on the floor roughly about 2 more feet closer than where I normally sit (about 5 feet away) and I thought, Wow, NESN's HD is much better tonight, it looks alot sharper. So I did a troubleshoot on my eyes and sat and in my normal spot and went Ohh, still looks great and sharp but another foot closer and it was better. So much to wife's displeasing I moved all the furniture in about a foot and half closer. That was my first experince with the infamous size remorse.
so now I have two things to throw at her, 1. We get the plasma and it'll be easier on her eyes. 2. If we get the 42 in. the furniture can go back to it's normal spot.
and if I'm really lucky the VO can go in the bedroom.
Now that would be the best result's possible.
Hmm I wonder what my chances are?

Aww don't say that it makes me want to move up to the 42" I sit 6-12 ft depending if I'm on my chair or laying in my bed.
Sorry I was just saying what I had and liked. Of course the number one regret is not buying bigger for most everyone.
Did not mean to spoil your enjoyment of what you had at all. I was just trying to tell the other guy he could get a lot bigger tv for a very little more money, thats all.

The 32" felt big to me at first until my buddy got a 46" that ruined it for me after going over there a few times and hanging out, 40" up has only recently got to where normal folks can afford them. Not trying to spend your money for you but I'm just making a good piont. You should get one big enough you won't want another anytime soon as you are likely to keep a good tv for 5 -10 years right? and 40 inch plasmas are very reasonably priced now. Good luck convincing your wife to let you get another tv.
Funny you said that about the furniture. Mine has been moved a bunch too.

No worries ;) I'm still in the 90 day return policy (even though I lost my receipt) Maybe I'll step up my game :o

As far as you sit you would like it I know. never follow those guides on tv buying size they would have you think you need a 60-70 inch screen to sit 10 feet away.
40 -42" in 16:9 is about the same as 32" in 4:3. I had an old 4:3 crt 32" so it took a 42" to get me close to the same screen height I was used to. The extra width is nice also.
videobruce 07-26-08, 10:47 AM Is Goldstar (LG if you perfer) the only supplier of 32" plasma panels? The next size up is still 42"?
Buckeye911 07-26-08, 12:02 PM Is Goldstar (LG if you perfer) the only supplier of 32" plasma panels? The next size up is still 42"?
I believe this is the case. LG supplies the panel for the 32" Vizio and Insignia plasmas. Panasonic used to make a 37" plasma but stopped a couple of years ago with the 37px60u.
litwick87 07-26-08, 05:36 PM anyone get into the service menu yet?
So what will happen if I don't do image cleaner after playing 360? Does the IR disappear after it's left off for a while? Do most of you see IR after video gaming?

Going by what most people have said, it should go away after a few minutes of normal viewing, unless it is really bad in which case it should go away with the image cleaner.
bigern53 07-26-08, 07:40 PM 527.00 for 32" plasma not 700.00
527.00 for 32" plasma not 700.00
Yes he is right I saw it last night and that is correct. The 42"retails for $747.
The 32 was a nice looking tv I must mention, not used to seeing plasma that size- it caught my eye. Only seen them at WM so far.
It stood out next to all the lcd's that size- not milky looking at all and it moves plenty fast. I had a little time to look at it. Nice tv for the asking price. I'm impressed, even though it can't touch my panasonic it is a very nice tv for anyone interested.
So what will happen if I don't do image cleaner after playing 360? Does the IR disappear after it's left off for a while? Do most of you see IR after video gaming?
That depends on how long you game at a time. less than 6 hours of gaming at reasonable settings it should go away pretty fast- like a few minutes. Never leave games paused for maore than a couple minutes without simply changing the channel or so forth.
I would just look at something in full screen for a hour. Exercise the whole screen a little after long gaming sessions. Just don't set it in torch mode and you should be ok. A little common sense usually prevails.
If you are experiencing IR please explain the circumstances a little better. How bad and how long, and how long did you game to bring it on. At what settings?

I've played Forza for a solid hour an noticed some very faint IR were the time and gauge display would have been. It went away after a minute or so. Also should say that I didn't notice it unless screen was displaying solid black. It did not detract from the gaming experience.
I've yet to use the image cleaner.
Bill1313 07-27-08, 01:42 PM Just for kicks I emailed Vizio & asked them what other stores beside Wal-Mart sells the 32 inch plasma or will be selling it & they emailed me back only Wal-Mart.
Thanks for all the replies guys. I have one last question:
I was reading up on aspect ratios and I'm planning to pick up an HD-DVD Player for cheap. Now in 2.35:1 movies, how large are the black bars and do they cause much IR?

I would not buy a hd dvd- no matter the price. They are not going to keep making hddvds from what I have heard(discs or players). All I have seen in the stores lately is blu ray to tell you the truth. Someone else may know more on this. Same thing that happened to beta back in the day.
I have not seen a hddvd on the shelf in close to 6 mos.
Get yourself a ps3 and you can movie and game!
The 2.35:1 bars take up about 10% at the top and 10% more at the bottom. Not a deal with ir assuming you don't watch 6 movies in a row and the tv is broke in already.
Thanks for the reply mate. I have about 30 HD-DVD movies I bought for $100 on craigslist and I bought a $5 HD-DVD addon from Kmart for my 360. I don't plan to watch too many movies so it shouldn't be a problem. I'm probably picking up the set within two weeks so I'll take a few pics when I set it up. I just hope my IR isn't as serious as other people and as serious as some of you say. The only problem I'll have is I like to put my video games on pause every now and then and browse the web. :(
Are there any new revisions to the TV that reduced IR?

If you're going to leave the game paused for a long time, you can always just turn the TV off and power it back up when you're ready to resume play.

Look at the Insignia model, it has a Cinema mode that completely fills the screen with 2.39 or 2.40:1 without overly skewing the picture. IR becomes negligible on either set after a couple hundred hours or so.

vizo's aspect ratio not being on the remote is really only a pain if you use the TV for over the air, but if you have an HD Cable box or if you are using a universal remote, then it's a non-issue.
I have comcast and it has a HD Zoom button which give's you a choice of 4 different aspect ratio options.

My coworker said the "wide" button on his Harmony One works both on his 52" Gallevia and VP322.
So if you have another Vizio with a wide button it'll probably work on all models?

I belive at the beginning of the thread that someone tried this and it didn't work, I could be wrong, it's a long thread. My problem with the Vizios format options were just that they are not very useful. None are a good balance between zooming and skewing and they still leave letterbox bars with 2.40 content. Not a great idea IMO.

I actually like the format options my Comcast remoite gives. If I have to distort at all I like Zoom1, this works best on my Vizio. Again the remote lacking an aspect ratio button only affects people using OTA and then have to go into the menu to change the aspect.
If you have a Universal remote, or your Cable or Sat. HD Box w/remote it's a total non issue, in fact your cable box will offer you more options.

I do believe the person was having trouble putting in the right codes to the Harmony but it all got figured out.

Mine is fed off the secondary output of my Dish Network VP722 which has much more limited formatting options than the primary output, hence, I have to rely on the formatting options of the tv itself. The formatting options on the primary tuner of the 722 are great, including grey bar. That is run to my 85u in the living room though.

Costco in Indy has them now. Looks like a great deal for a set that size.
Really, that's very intereting. I wonder if it has a different model #. They have new VP423 for Sears? that has a few more fun features.

extra HDMI, PIP and POP, that I can remember of the top of my head. And I think it comes with an HDMI cord as well
Bill1313 07-30-08, 06:12 PM AlanBuck, Yep, I was in my local Costco today & they also had them for less than Wal-Mart & with Costco's 2 year warranty. Just goes to show that those Customer Reps are wrong as usual. It might of had a different model number though? but I din't have time to check it because I was in a hurry to get out of there.
Anyone want to take some pics of their VP322 in action?
I'd prefer some 2.35:1 movie, 2.4:1 movie, or video game. But I'd really take anything.
headkiss 07-30-08, 09:54 PM Hey guys...i just got my VP422 yesterday and i'm enjoying it. I have it connected to my xbox 360 via component and there is some graininess to the picture....sort of like a slight noise if u will. i am using the picture settings posted on cnet. does anyone have a solution 4 this? could it be the component cables? i just ordered hdmi cables from monoprice but until then if anyone has a possible solution pls let me know. Thx.
litwick87 07-30-08, 11:23 PM so did anyone get it calibrated? or get into the service menu (if it has one) to do a indepth calibration?
headkiss 07-31-08, 01:23 AM p.s i also have the noise on the RGB input as well. i get my dvr tomorrow so i'll see if the hdmi input has the same problem.

Where are you guys located? I'm in NY and do not see any at Costco. Not on their Website either. By the way, the price on the Walmart model dropped again-$514! And the LCD version is down to $527!
Is Vizio coming out with new models and Walmart dumping???
I think their is going to be a Vizio VP323, for the warehouses, VP322 for Wal-Mart there is a VP423 that just came out to the Costco's and such, VP323 will slowly make their way into this, I would think.
The prices are starting to get nuts now. I don't know if this is due to the economy as it seems sales of Flat panals across the board aren't doing so well, or if it's Vizio's response to the Big Boy's lowering their prices to compete with Vizio, whatever it is, It's getting crazy, and of course I bought mine 2 months ago. LOL

Well, I stand corrected. Just left COSTCO and the 32" plasma is indeed in stock. Model VP322HDTV10A-$499.99. Less than current Walmart price even after the current Walmart price reduction. I guess this answers the question of why Walmart has been aggressively reducing prices for this set as well as the 32" LCD. The current COSTCO price for the 32" LCD is $529. Model LCD VO32LHDTC10A. About the same price as Walmart. Not sure whether the models are the same between the two stores.
Question: Does either the LCD or Plasma have Aspect control? Doubt it for the plasma but LCD I have to check with Vizio. Aspect control is a deal breaker for me.

Yes it does for SD, but you need to go to the On screen menu. The remote does not come with a "wide" button, but if you have a Harmony (or another Vizio remote) their "wide" button works on the VP322.

The 32 in model LCD The VO32L is different than the 32 in LCD at Walmart which is the VW. The VO32 has more added features.
I have the VO32L and no it doesn't have the aspect ratio button on the remote. You have to go into the settings. But my Comcast remote does "HDZoom" and it give 4 Aspect Ratio options that work just fine. But I never touch them. I HATE the stretch and distorted route. But yeah if you are using your cable remote or a Universal it's no problem if you like to stretch.

Wow, you just made my decision tougher. Was thinking of going with the Insignia Plasma at BB because I believe it adds aspect control, which the Vizio plasma does not have - I believe I read in another thead her. $547 less 10% easy to find coupon means around $500. But given the option of Costco or BB I would prefer Costco.
Insignia at Best Buy (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8760771&st=32+insignia&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1203815033908)

Would you be using the TV via Over the Air or do you have cable or Sat? If you have cable or stat. or a Universal Remote the aspect ratio button on the
those remotes will work on the Vizio VP32.
jgamikos 07-31-08, 04:00 PM My father bought the vp422 model from Walmart a couple months ago. I just bought him a new Vizio remote that works on all their models. I made sure the vp322 and vp422 were on there.
You can change the aspect ratio with the "wide" button.
http://www.amazon.com/Vizio-Remote-Control-plasma-Hdtv/dp/B001905C62
If you do plan on ordering the remote from Amazon, just be sure not to order from GOHASTINGS.
Why?
Because they don't actually have the remote at all, and instead you'll be mailed a lovely CD like I did. While I'm sure "All Saints" are a fantastic bunch of singers, the cd wasn't going to help me change aspect ratios back when I owned the VP322.
I was told their Vizio Remote listing was an error..... that still hasn't been fixed apparently. :p
I'm glad to see this thread is still going strong.

So basically the remote that comes with the 32" plasma does not have a "Wide" button ?
Anyone know if Costco matches Sam's?

Correct. VP322 Remote does NOT have a "wide" button. However if you happen to have another Vizio remote (or Harmony) that comes with it , it WILL work.
Otherwise, you need to go to the on screen menu.
Well I feel like I should post my 1-day experience with this TV. I purchased this TV yesterday got every OTA channel with simple rabbit ears...awesome. And then it had one draw back, I got the vertical lines with a component source. Wasn't to terrible was debating what to do. Then today (less than 24 hours later) I was watching some HD show and the top right corner of the screen went black and won't display anything from any source, the screen is hosed. So its back to wally world for this beast. I might give it another go ... we'll see

COSTCO in New Rochelle, NY-about five miles north of NYC border In Westchester County. Just off I-95 (New England Thruway).
Since I go there about once a week, I would say they just received these sets this week.

OK, lets talk a little more about aspect control-and whether a a second party remote (such as a HARMONY) with aspect control-will work with the VIZIO plasma.
An earlier posting referred to a review of the plasma set that was quite good. This review, as well as other postings on this thread, notes "On high definition channels ----- the aspect ratio option in the menu was grayed out, so if your source device does not allow aspect ratio control, then you're stuck with whatever is being TRANSMITTED to the set." Under these circumstances I do not believe ANY remote is going to control the aspect ratio of the set. If a cable or set top box (and its remote) is part of the circuit, AND is capable of aspect control, then this becomes a mute point. The box adjusts the picture size sent to the TV.
I have Verizon Fios service and have a lot of 4:3 pictures sent over the many HD channels which I adjust with the ZOOM function on the set top box remote. I will be using the Vizio set at a different location where I would love not to have to rent a set top box. Have noticed 4:3 pictures also transmitted on the HD channels in this other location.
For those channels received via the ATSC tuner where the Plasma TV is capable of adjusting picture size via the remote's menu, I am sure a second party remote will work fine. But apparently "Zoom" (no stretch) will not be an option. Just not programmed into the TV.
Would love someone to correct me on the observations stated above. Like the set-just have a problem with aspect control. If I buy it, it seems I will have to rent a set top box and I am so cheap!!!!! :D

This thread talking about the Insignia has the aspect button on the remote that works in HD and has better zooming function then the Vizio.
The Insignia does not have the IR Cleanup button on the remote the Vizio has. O wonder if a Universal Remote would fix that issue.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1048985
Also, I was looking at a pic of the VP322 remote and I dont see the IR cleanup button that people state it has ?
IR cleanup is in the menue settings in the Vizio. The Insignia doesn't have it all.
tsteph69 08-01-08, 01:32 PM IR cleanup is in the menue settings in the Vizio. The Insignia doesn't have it all.
Not really an issue, easily accomplished other ways, the lack of manual white balance was really the only thing that I missed from the Vizio. The Insignia has more inputs though, and no noise on the component inputs so I feel it's a fair trade. The aspect control button on the Insignia is on the remote and works on all sources, including HD programming. It has a "cinema" mode that the Vizio lacks that completely eliminates the letterbox bars on 2.40:1 programming and doesn't overly skew the picture. Both sets use the identical LG panel, one is just assembled by Vizio, the other is assembled by Proview (the Insignia, obviously)
tsteph69 08-01-08, 01:35 PM Just out of curiosity, has anyone gotten one of these yet that didn't have the hum bars on the component input? The last one that I had even had it (to a lesser degree) on the antenna input.

My comcast remote has that feature for 2:35 film, Zoom1 that works well on my Vizio, you're right it really doesn't overly skew it. It's not bad at all.

It would be interesting to see how widespread that issue is. Out of all the people that got this set that posted here it only seems that 3 or 4 people reported the banding issue over component. If you are using HDMI for all inputs this is a non issue. But it would be interesting if we could have the production date from the people that did have these issues and see if they match up, sounds like a bad batch got out during one of the productions months.

You are correct, for 16:9 (or 2.4:1) pictures the TV is stuck in wide mode and there's no way you can change it. 20 pages (?) ago somebody got a response from Vizio saying they're working on a firmware change - let's hope it's not vapor.
I can verify that the harmony (or other vizio remote with the "wide" button) will work with ATVs 4:3 though.

Out of the 3 sets that I had, I only had one where there was actually a difference between wide and whatever the other widescreen aspect was (can't remember now) on the other two it did nothing at all. Not sure about the production dates on the sets with lines but I bought all mine during a 3 week period and aquired them from 3 different WalMarts (we're fortunate enough to have 5 WalMarts within a reasonable driving distance) and they all had it. I finally threw up my hands and was ready to buy an lcd (yuck) when I found the Insignia.
murphythefatcat 08-11-08, 11:42 AM I just purchased my VP322 from Costco last weekend for $499. The picture is great and the sound is not so great. I think the CNET review was off-base. The HD channels I get with the QAM tuner are very clear. Maybe my standards for video quality are not very high though.
There are a couple things I am not very pleased with though. The first is that I am using this unit as a television and computer monitor. The remote is not very helpful when I want to switch the source from tv to computer. I have to select the input button and the press the down arrow key three times to get to the RGB selection. To switch to any other source with the remote, there is a dedicated button. So moving back to tv from computer is easy - just press the tv button. The only thing I can think of to remedy this problem is to buy a learning-capable remote control.
The second is the electronic programming guide that Vizio provides with the tv. I am pulling down channels without a STB, so I have no cable-provided programming guide. And, the one that Vizio provides is not useful at all. I now that a television's programming guide is partially dependent on what information a cable company provides, but Vizio's user interface is horrible. Without a programming guide, digital channels are hard to get to because of the numbering format like this: xxx-xxx. I simply won't be able to remember what NBC's digital number is for example. The only thing I can think of is to print out a channel line up and leave it next to the tv.
Does anyone have any ideas for my above issues?
Does anyone have any good setting for the VP322?
mr_america_117 08-12-08, 03:01 AM No answers to the noisy picture? i still have it over hdmi.
You have that too now? I think I have more of a set of lines just like the component but they are very small and evenly spaced. I noticed this when I was playing Madden 09 (yes on 720p)
I think I'm going to take the set back and get a Insignia.
BTW: WTH happened to all of my posts? It seems like on pages 31-32 of this thread they're all gone. WTH. Did they not get posted? The ones with my 2nd set giving me a nasty odor??

Oh, my bad. I'm a first time user here, and I only check this thread. And I was thinking on the lines of all those posts were in a dream....or the matrix, one of the two.
aerodynamics 08-13-08, 04:58 AM From the Insignia thread:
SD on any HDTV looks like crap. HDTV is made for HD. Period.
Is SD at least tolerable on the Vizio? Compared to other HDTVs? I only have basic cable and don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. The OTA channels are fine for me.
Funny how these two threads go hand in hand.
drum714 08-13-08, 08:37 AM SD is fine on the vizio, no different than any other TV, and I am only getting TV stations OTA.
mr_america_117 08-13-08, 09:31 PM Does anybody know about the 90 day return policy? I got my first set on June 14th. And my second set just a few days ago. So would the 90 days be from the first set or does it reset everytime you get a replacement tv?
And what if I got the 2-year warranty? Should I have to not worry about the 90 days return policy if I have the extra 2-year warranty?
THANKS
Because if I have until tomorrow to decide, I'm probably going to take it back to Wal-Mart and get the Insignia plasma

It would seem that 90 days would take you to Sept 14th so you have another month. Best bet would be to call the store and ask to be sure.

admiralriker 08-16-08, 12:24 AM Hello. First time Plasma owner.
I am petrified of burn in. Just using the damn menu shows image retention on the screen. For gods sakes, the mute symbol shown for 3 seconds leaves retention.
I really want to take it back to walmart because im so afraid of burn in and ruining the tv.
I dont have a stand alone DVD player for the calibration break in dvd, I only have a ps3 and that thing will run my electric bill up.
Should I be so afraid and how can I break it in? It seems that every damn channel I watch has a symbol on it and im afraid im going to have the NBC peacock or FOX burnt in.
HELP ME!

Wow, if you're THAT worried, I'd just take it back and get an LCD. If you take care of your plasma, aka not leave in on for 7 hours straight with a videogame on pause, you should be relatively fine. But if you just got your TV, there will be some break-in time and this particular set is pretty bad when it comes to IR but you should be fine.
admiralriker 08-16-08, 04:27 AM How can I break the TV in without the Break-in DVD?
Also, Do you think that I would be better off with an LCD?
I played a game for about 20 minutes (With "Burn In Protection" enabled in the game) and when I got done, all of the huds were totally visible and I had to used the "Screen Cleaner" function.
With THIS SPECIFIC SET, should I just get an LCD?

maybe....just "maybe", you'd be better off simply with a better plasma? Vizio isn't exactly the top brand, hopefully you know this when you were getting such a display for a bargain level price.
stratusfactionrt 08-16-08, 03:48 PM I just picked this TV up from Costco yesterday. It's hooked up in my bedroom directly to a coax cable. I've mainly been watching the Olympics in HD, but have also seen some SD content and one DVD. Here are my first impressions so far:
- I don't think the HD PQ is as good as our main TV (Sony KDS-60A3000) in the living room, but it's hard to tell given the size difference (32" vs. 60") and the different room setups. Overall I wouldn't call PQ amazing, but definitely fine for $500.
- The remote is very cheap-looking IMHO.
- You can't skip or turn off inputs (you have to cycle through each of them with the "input" button); also, the TV actually changes inputs as you cycle through them (instead of just showing you a menu and waiting until you've made your selection to actually switch inputs, which I prefer). Individual buttons for most of the inputs to take you directly to them is nice, at least.
- You have to control sunlight coming into the room b/c of glare off the glossy screen; even with a little amount of sunlight, I can see the reflection of furniture and other items in my room fairly easily when the screen color is dark/black.
- The "Vizio" label on the front of the TV lights up white when on and orange when the TV is off (standby). I'm sure I'll get used to this.
- There's no "enter" button on the remote (you have to wait several seconds for the channel to actually change, which is just plain annoying).
- Holding down the channel +/- button for surfing does not flip through the channels quickly (it's painfully slow if you are used to a CRT TV).
- The TV runs very HOT.
- The menu text is tiny.
+ You can name the inputs.
+ Quality of SD programming is great (it looks just like it did on my CRT TV, which is nice since most HDTV's I've seen make SD programming look absolutely horrible).
+ I've noticed some IR here and there, but none yet to complain too much about like others in this thread.
That's it for now! I know I have a lot of criticism/negatives above, but most of them are just nit picks. All in all, this TV is a keeper so far, especially for $500. Will follow this thread and keep posting updates...
SGT.Baker 08-16-08, 04:53 PM I finally picked up this t.v. today. It's got great p.q. even though I haven't played HD stuff yet. 360 plz come back:( no ir yet but when I took out of the box The plastic warning on wrap was melted to screen. Came off easy with wipe. Overall It's great so far but I get the lines over Composite on Vcr. Anyway to Remedy this?
I had to get something. My house was hit by lightning on Thursday, and it took out my modem, router Motherboard on 1 computer, My Denon AVR 3200, and my trusty old toshiba 32 in Flat screen CRT in my living room. luckily my Pioneer 1150 Elite was spared. I needed something, so I read this forum and hopped in my van and went to Wal-Mart. Picked up This visio for 518. It looks pretty good, not as good as the 1150, but better than my toshiba. the remote is crap, and I am having a tough time getting my dish network universal remote to pick up the new code. I am also watching my cable feed through the digital tuner direct so I can get the HD.
jgamikos 08-17-08, 12:56 PM Hey guys,
I'm sure some of you who have been following this thread for a while would be interested in seeing some flat panel sales data. I was reading about the lcd and plasma markets and came across some interesting things. Seems like Vizio has lost some market share on the lcd side. Samsung is the leader there.
But in the plasma market Vizio had a huge 2nd quarter jump. 223% growth between 1st and 2nd quarter. What caused that? According to DisplaySearch it was the 32" plasma model that has helped Vizio come in right behind Panasonic in overall market share, right ahead of Samsung. I have the 42" version and I know how popular the 32" versions were.
Just thought you guys would be interested in the reading. :)

Wow, I never believed that actually happened to people. Was your pc stuff plugged into a powerstrip ?
Splicer010 08-17-08, 02:01 PM Wow, I never believed that actually happened to people. Was your pc stuff plugged into a powerstrip ?
OT but yes...stuff like this happens to people...Had a [very] near-by lightning strike last summer and lost my Onkyo AVR and Infinity Servo Sub...both plugged into the same surge protected power strip as my Toshiba 51H83 and DTV tuner and Sony CD player...Nothing else was killed...Just the AVR & Sub...Which was bad enough...
SGT.Baker 08-17-08, 07:25 PM I've seen A bit of IR after watching AVP (don't know how to get those black bars off) and playing Burnout Revenge but went away after 2 secs of Image Cleaner. Though the IR to begin with was hardly seeable even on Beginning of Image Cleaner. On second day and I'm really loving my new T.V. Splicer is their any way you can show a side-by-side comparison of Your 2 plasmas? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you'll find a much better picture quality if you ran it off of HDMI than the old coaxial.

He is running irect from the wall to the TV...not through a converter...So HDMI is a moot point...;)

Exactly. I don't feel like spending the extra $15 per month for another cable box to be able to run it through HDMI, especially when this is just a bedroom TV.
With that said, does the cable box actually improve the quality if hooked to the TV through HDMI (since the cable box is still getting its feed from the coax cable)?
Buckeye911 08-18-08, 01:28 AM I just picked this TV up from Costco yesterday.
Can you try hooking up an antenna and seeing how the PQ compares? An OTA signal is usually of higher quality than one from the cable company due to less compression of the signal. If you see an improved picture OTA then you will know that the problem is not your TV. Of course you could also connect your Vizio in the living room to see how it compares to your Sony.
SGT.Baker 08-18-08, 09:03 AM I really only see IR now when I leave stuff up there for an hour. I'm still loving it.
Can't find a way to get black bars off CBS HD. Also is it only HD if you have an HD antenna?
CBS HD shouldn't be having black bars, there is something amiss in your settings, are you using a cable box? Check the settings in that. Make sure it's set to either 1080i or 720P and 4:3 bypass or off and Wide also make sure you TV setting is set to Wide.
SGT.Baker 08-18-08, 01:35 PM I'm using a regular antenna and it says it's in 1080i. Still can't figure out how to fix it. Since I started running the break-in disk I feel like there is more IR than before.
P.S. Does the 360 upconvert to 720p

Just because a channel is an HD channel does not mean they broadcast everything in HD. CBS HD, NBC HD, ABC HD, etc... still broadcast plenty of SD content, especially late night and day time. When the broadcast is in SD there should be bars on the sides.
An "HD" antenna is not required, any old antenna you have laying around can pick up HD signals. In some cases people have picked up HD programming using a wire coat hanger.:)

360 does upconvert but only with a VGA HD Cable or HDMI cable, not Component.
SGT.Baker 08-18-08, 02:21 PM CAn you get A dvd to play in 720p without upconverting DVD player? If so how

Yes, you don't need to do anything. All TVs will scale input to their native resolution to display. Whether you can benefit from an upconverting DVD player depends on whether the player or the TV has a better scaler.
SGT.Baker 08-18-08, 03:22 PM The T.v. is saying that it is in 480i still.
The TV is just showing you the format (480i) of the applied signal. The TV is still upconverting the signal for you.
Buckeye911 08-18-08, 04:13 PM The T.v. is saying that it is in 480i still.
The TV is displaying the signal being input from the source. This signal is then scaled to the TVs native resolution of 1024x720 and displayed as such.

Yeah, you are right, I was thinking he was watching a CBS show that is broadcasted in HD but was having black bars on the top and bottom and if this is the case then a setting needs to be changed.

No...In many cases the PQ is actually degraded a bit...

I disagree with that statment 100% but it could be on your end. Maybe the cable box is old, but they cable box with HDMi should never degrade your picture.
I remember hooking mine up to coaxiel straight from the wall to watch TV while we waited for the cable guy to show up and once he hooked up a brand new HD box via HDMI it was like WOW!!!!!!!!!!! it blows away coaxiel.
Hey all,
Just thought I would chime back in after having this TV for just over 3 months. I completely forgot about my exchange period, and would have returned the TV if I had remembered about it. Oh well, the picture quality is still pretty good. I would guess that there is around 3-400 hours on the TV by now. Has anyone figured out how to access the service menu to see the actual stats? I still seem to get a lot of image retention especially on channel logos. I was out of town this past weekend and when I came back I had that super large SOAPNET logo in the lower corner again (the misses likes to fall asleep with the TV on). I know it isn't permanent, but it is a real pain to get rid of it.

Oh I see my dvds are looking better than usual. I see why:) Still Probably not even past 100 hours but I'm playing games and watching movies for hours but am being really careful about it though.
P.S. Thx guys for making me get this new t.v.

A little off topic but can you let us know what cable box it is? My cable box is downright awful and coaxial looks MUCH better

Disagree all you want...You probably were watching NTSC cable whereas this guy was actually watching QAM...
noj11jon 08-20-08, 03:03 PM Does anyone have any new news on the interference bars that alot of people have been seeing when using component inputs? This is my last opportunity to return this TV as I'm about to hit my 3 months. The bars have always been there for me, but usually they aren't very noticable. So has there been any word from Vizio on the problem, or does anyone have a newer set that does not experience the issue at all?
