I just received my black speaker cloth from PartsExpress.com, 260-335 Grill Cloth Black Yard 70" Wide, and it is very thin/transparent.

I am thinking that once applied to my cabinet and columns to hide speakers it will not be very effective.

What other products should I be using?
Is GOM acceptable for this use?

I would not personally use GOM in front of speakers. I used STRETCH velvet fully stretched and it is very AT in that state but also hides very well.

It will only be sheer (see through) if light is projected from behind it. It will look fine with light in front of it. If you are still worried, paint the object you are attaching the cloth to the same color as your cloth.

GOM looks a little "see through" as well, but that doesn't stop it from looking very good AND doing it's Acoustically Transparent thing!

The 122" wide stuff is $12.90/yd and the 61" wide is $6.95/yd. The fabric is excellent in regards to acoustic transparency. Someone on the forum did some measurments with different fabrics a while back, and if I remember correctly the Dazian finished with the best results. If I can find the thread, I will post a link.

Hmmm, I would have never chose this based on the description as it does not specify that it is acoustically transparent or used for "speaker cloth" applications.

I'll second the idea that the Parts Express cloth should be fine provided you arent covering up a light source or something very shiny/reflective. I used it over a center speaker. The speaker frame was originally white so I hit it with some flat black spray paint (I also touched up the center dome tweeter after this pic):

Unfortunately I got involved in building the fabric frame and forgot to take pictures of it during the process.

I bult a small frame out of 3"x3/8" stock from Home Depot. At the rear two joints, and at the front-top two joints where the flat stock makes a 90-degree butt joint, I added a small piece of 1/2" square stock in the corner for stength.

For the front-lower joints where the side portion of the flat frame makes a 90-degree turn to follow the profile of the light tray, I overlapped the butt joints with another small piece of 3x3/8" stock for strength.

I then notched the lower-front corner of the frame to accept a piece of 5/16" square stock running along the lower-front "edge" of the frame to serve as a point to wrap the fabric around. This is what allows the fabric to make a 90-dgree turn and have the same profile as the light tray. Here's a shot to see what I mean:

When I test fit the frame, friction alone held it in place pretty well. When I wrapped the fabric around it, it held even better, and I didn't have to use the clamps I was planning on fabricating.

I wish I had pictues of it during the build. Much easier than trying to describe it. If you REALLY would like me to, I can pull it down and snap some pics of the inside for you.

The celtic cloth has a long history on the forum of being used as an acoustically transparent projector screen. I tried doing a search to find that thread I mentioned earlier, but didn't have much luck. In that thread though, the person tested the audio capabilities of different materials used as AT projection screens (including dalite, vutec, celtic cloth, and screen research clearpix) and the celtic cloth had the least adverse affects on audio. Try doing a search for "celtic cloth" and you will find a lot of first hand accounts of people's experience with it. I am very happy using it as speaker cloth and find no issues with audio quality (I'm no audiophile, however).

The samples of Dazian are on the way. I just received a sample from Fabric Mate for their AudioMesh line.

Check this out. Is the useable as speaker cloth? It says that its rated for seating and panels. I am not so sure if its good for speaker cloth. I can certainly breath through it but not as easy as the cloth sample from SpeakerWorks.

This material is pretty thick, spongy and the back is not as weaved as the front. Feels very durable.

I never thought about that. It seems that after reading some stuff here on acoustical material that it might "color" the sound. But I bet I wouldnt be able to detect it if it did anyone.

Well, a lot of samples came and I got around to comparing them today.

In comparison of my samples from Fabric Mate, Dazian, Speaker Works and Parts Express. The PE material is very .... purple looking, not so "black".

The Fabric Mate material, while very cool look and feel, does not seem to be the best fit for my application. I want something more traditional.

Dazian Celtic Cloth, is very black. But it appears very solid compared to the Speaker Works material. As if it would affect acoustics somewhat. I put the cloth to my mouth and blew...lots of resistance.

The Speaker Works material matches in black with others except for PE (as this is..purple looking) and is not as transparent as the PE material but definetely appears to be ready to use for speakers.

Why hasnt anyone mentioned Speaker works? Its about 12.00 sq yd (67" wide by 36")

I agree the PE stuff is very sheer, so much so that it does appear different colors. When I first took it out of the box, I thought it looked brown. When installing it I then thought it had a deep blue/purplish hue as well. What I ended up doing is doubling it up and then it looked very black. Acoustically, my ears couldn't tell the difference.

Oh, BTW, my first post on AVS! :) I have been a long time lurker, tho, gathering tons of info.
