Have sold my 50" Fujitsu. My installer wants to sell me a Samsung FPT5884 to replace it--says it is a better model than the PN58a550. I thought it was an older model soon to be discontinued. Is that the case? It is hard to compare the PDF files at Samsung.com. 5884 has Ultra FilterBright vs just FitlerBrite on 550, a 2 yr warranty vs 1 yr for 550, 14,000:1 contrast ratio vs 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (how does that compare?), and possibly some extra connections (S-Video etc).
Would you pay as much or more for the 5884 than the 550? (It does list for more on Amazon.com) Is it really an older soon to be discontinued model? Should I just go with the Panasonic TH58PZ700U over either of them (Negative only 2 HDMIs vs 3 for the Samsungs)

The 550 is the latest one from Samsung that just came out a month ago.
The 5884 & the Panasonic TH58PZ700U are last years model.

Tough choice :cool:
I love longer warranties but my first priority is picture quality. Go for the one that looks best to you. If they look roughly equal, I'd go for the 5884.

I believe they rate the panel life on the 550 as 100,000 hours, vs. 60,000 on the 5584, not that that really matters, lol. Both are many years.

UFB vs just FB might be a big factor for some (depending on how much sun you get in the chosen room), but I spoke with the manager at the Samsung Experience Store in manhattan and he did not hesitate to inform that UFB aside, the a550 and a650 offer vastly more advanced PQ than the 5884 model.
I wouldn't even consider a 5884 over a a550. However, b/c i get a fair amount of sunlight in my living room, I'm considering paying the price for a a650.
