I have this movie on SD which the upscaling was great on an A-35 and PS3. How do you compare the Upscale versus the Blu-HD. I think the AVS Blu-Ray reviews is a great idea.
Ralph Potts 05-11-08, 06:31 PM Greetings,
Thanks.
I have the SD version and watched it scaled from 480i to 1080p via HDMI using an Anthem AVM-50 pre/pro and Denon 5308CI (which I am currently using in my review system).
The difference is not subtle. Richer colors, deeper image penetration (detail), and much improved dimensional perspective.
Cheers,

Just look at these screen shots (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=13842258#post13842258) posted by Xylon and you can see precisely what Ralph is describing except he should have use much, more, and much much more in describing each difference.:D
BTW: Ralph your reviews are just right. Not too long, not too sweet, not too over the top, not too pretentious, well written, concise, informative, and just plain interesting to read. Keep up the good work.
Good job on the review it is bummer that it do's not have the longer cut.
Ralph Potts 05-12-08, 04:46 AM Greetings,
Thank you for your comments William, they are much appreciated.:)
I agree John. The longer cut would have definitely been more appropriate and pleasing to fans who have been anticipating the release of Narnia on Blu-ray.

Well I did pre-order for 39.99 Amazon, the National Treasure duo last night after reading your review and Narnia will be my next order. My problem is I won't pay over 20.00 per DVD and again it is great to have you review first as I prefer not to get a stinker for 20.00. With the price of gas and food, I prefer not waste money on stinkers.

Congrats, Ralph, and welcome to your review post!! Your first ones are most insightful and helpful. Thanks for all your effort.
That being said, I must disagree with you and the previous poster in the opinion that the "extended edition" of "Narnia" should have been the one released on Blu-Ray. I've stated on another thread that there is ample commentary that the "extended edition" is mostly extraneous filler.
That being said, I DO agree that this Blu-Ray release should have "contained" the "extended edition;" I just don't believe that should have been the official release.
Seamless branching would have allowed everyone to be happy. I would personally have really enjoyed comparing the two versions.
But when I buy a film, unless it's officially a "Director's Cut" (ala "Alexander, etc.") or "Director's Extended Edition" (ala the superb LOTR longer releases, or Oliver Stone's "JFK," which fills out alot in that complex film), I prefer to have the original theatrical release that I enjoyed in the theatre.
Just my two cents!! Again, Ralph, congratulations on your most welcome, insightful and valuable contributions to AVS Forums!!

gonzalc3 05-14-08, 07:10 AM Ralph,
I watched this movie last night. The sound is definetely demo material..However, in some parts it would of been nicer to have ambiance sound... On the video side is quite good but not on the same league as the audio... In the medium -long shots you loose sharpness. Nevertheless, it is a good presentation and I am looking forward to see the Caspian Prince..

Thanks for sharing your impressions Christian ! I look forward to seeing Price Caspian as well.

LRZNole 05-14-08, 02:40 PM Is it true that the special features has chinese subtitles but the actual movie does not?
Reason I ask is my nephew from Hong Kong is living with us and he is learning english so having the subtitles helps him a lot. All the Harry Potter blu-ray discs have chinese subtitles (with the exception of the 1st movie) so I would like him to be able to experience Narnia as well.
Thanks.

LRZNole 05-14-08, 03:15 PM Most appreciated.
Thanks for the hard work.
I will probably buy the disc anyway because it received great reviews and I would like to add it to my collection but the chinese subtitles would be nice. I really don't understand why all blu-rays don't offer subtitles in multiple languages given their storage capacity.
bruecksteve 05-22-08, 12:48 PM Great job with the reviews, very detailed but straight to the point. I will be buying your recommended BD without question!
Thanks for all your hard work.
ryoohki 05-22-08, 09:56 PM Nice review and 100% with you on this one. The imaging between L/C/R and RS and RL (in Front/B and L/R movement) is suberb all the way. Good LFE and very nice dynamic range ;)
Altought i still think Enchanted is one of the best Buena yet, but it's a new title and it's more grainy than Narnia so that's about make them even. ;)

Saw "Narnia: Prince Caspian" two days ago in a very good theatre with excellent sound. The picture is wonderful-- quite a bit more adult (or semi-grown kid)-oriented. Sort of like jumping from Harry Potter 1 to Harry Potter 3 in one leap!
Performances all around are excellent. It's a worthy successor to the first film.

Great to hear Joe. Thanks !:)
lgans316 05-23-08, 05:14 AM An inevitable extended edition of Part-1 and theatrical edition of Part-2 will be on the release slate by end of this year.
Around 2009 fall we can expect E.E of Part-2 bundled with EE of Part-1.

Just finished viewing Narnia, Lion, Witch, Wardrobe Blu-Ray and it was as your review stated highly recommended, In my own words absolutely mind-boggling
goldielox 05-25-08, 11:03 PM Just watched the movie. Worthy upgrade from the SD edition. For those still on the fence, my copy included a $10 mail in rebate, with proof of purchase from the SD and blu ray copies.

Wow. I am surprised to find out that reviews are being copyrighted by the website.
Ralph,
I like the review pattern in this site for assessing PQ. Just wanted to know your opinions ? It's almost similar to yours but terms used are quite layman in nature. ;)

FoxyMulder 06-07-08, 10:29 AM I received this film a few days ago....Not watched it yet.
Do i miss something essential by just having the theatrical cut - Is the longer cut more absorbing and a better film for being longer ?
Just read what i'm missing by not having the extended cut .............Nothing.

bgillyjcu 11-25-08, 08:38 PM LFE on this movie should have been 3 paws at best. There was really only 2 stand out bass scenes and you mentioned them in the review. Ice Damn breaking and Table splitting. Other than that nothing really stood out and I have a PB-13 like you.
I think you should maybe scale back the ratings a bit....4 paws for very bass happy movies. Where the LFE is being use and it will really stand out.
5 paws only for movies like Cloverfield or WOTW....
I mean we are getting a little 99 and 100 happy lately :D
