I have a SONY SR1. Today the LCD image started flipping upside down while I was recording. Even though the LCD image is upside down it does record right side up when you play it back. But it's very annoying to look at my LCD screen and see my image upside down while I am trying to record. I have my record settings on HD. Have recorded multiple clips, downloaded to computer with no problems. This is the only problem I have had.

Funny thing is, I bought this camera exactly one year ago today - but per sony, my 1 year warranty for parts expired 6 days ago. Whatever. They were completely unhelpful. Not quite sure why I continue to buy Sony products when their support is so terrible.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem? I have performed a power reset and a hard reset. The image does not stay upside down but flips back and forth while recording or while the camera is in standby mode. The menus will even do this when you are trying to play back, change settings, etc.

Have you tried to turn your LCD 180 degrees (towards the subject you're trying to record)? What happens to the image when you do that.

Basically, the LCD image is supposed to flip upside down when you do this, so that the person you're trying to record can see what you're recording (very useful when trying to record young children BTW). That "flip" seems to happen at 90 degrees. I bet that there's something wrong with the sensor that detects the angle of your screen and always thinks that you're LCD is facing the subject and not you. If you do the test and the image is oriented correctly (aka: the "flip" doesn't happen), it would point to a faulty sensor. If the image is backwards even when you rotate the LCD around (aka: the "flip" is still happening), than the sensor is reporting the opposite of what it's supposed to.

Let us know how your SR1 reacts to that test.

when i flip it 180 it still does the same thing - it will flip back and forth. it flips back and forth very quickly and then sometimes it will flip and not flip back the right way for over a minute or so. when it first started yesterday it happened whenever i barely moved the lcd screen which makes me think that it may be the sensor you mentioned, but i can put it on my tripod perfectly still and it will flip back and forth. any ideas?

Well... they say knowing what the problem is usually is half the battle. In this case, the first thing I would probably try is to clean the axis with some compressed air to dislodge anything that could have gone in there (not sure if it's going to help, but it's worth trying). After that, we need to know more about how the sensor works. Is it electronic or mechanical or both? If it is purely mechanical, it may just need a little bit of lubricant. If it's electronic, it might be a faulty connection because of a half broken wire or something like that. It could also be just a bad contact somewhere else too. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the camcorder to help on this, but any camcorder service person could probably do that for you (not even necessarilly Sony authorized). In any way you see it, we're probably talking about a cleanup around the axis or maybe a solder needed to be done. But you'll need to get somebody that knows what s/he's doing to make sure the camcorder can be put back together.

My $0.02 anyways... not worth much more than that. :)
