View Full Version : JVC HD100, Sim 2 D80e, Sony VW200 which one is best for my living/cinema room?
Ok Guys,
It is time for me to buy my projector. Below I have tried to describe the room so that you can better understand the environment the projector will be situated in.
Room Dimensions:
5.7 meters (18.7 ft) x 4 meters (13.1 ft)
Projector Positioning:
The projector is being positioned 5 meters (16.4 ft) from the screen, just off the ceiling. The ceiling height is 8 ft, so the projector will be at approx 7.2 ft
Preferred Screen Type & Size:
I am looking for an electric screen between 95 and 100 inches. I do not know what sort of gain screen is ideal for this sort of room. I Also do not know who makes the best sCreens for my budget
Screen Budget:
My budget is around £1k or $2k US Dollars
Walls:
The ceiling is white and so is the wall to the right of the projector. The wall to the left is made up mostly of windows which will have full electric blackout blinds
The walls in front and behind the projector will be in dark, but glossy wood
Floor:
White Marble, however most the floor is covered with a large rug.
Furniture:
The room has 3 very large 3 seater sofas made of fabric, along with heavy curtains along the left wall.
Use of Projector:
I will be using the projector mostly for movies & video games.
The models which I am leaning towards are:
JVC HD100
Sony VW 200
Infocus IN83
Sim2 D80e
So which one do you think is best for this room?
THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!
Alan Gouger 05-11-08, 09:29 AM The SIM2, Domino D80E has just been rated as the benchmark projector in the “under” 5000 British pounds category ($9779 USD as of today’s conversion rate).

By whom ?

They will all be worthy performers. Obviously the JVC has the highest contrast and this is something to consider but you really need to spend more time and thought into your environment. All these projectors really perform in the perfect environment. In mediocre or even less the great viewing room/environment you might as well buy something around $2,000. You'll be just as happy.
It sounds like your room is going to be multipurpose. Do the best job you can getting the room better, then pick a good projector/screen combo that works.
Cameron 05-11-08, 03:46 PM Do you prefer DLP look to LCOS look?
Do you prefer DLP look to LCOS look?
I do not know. I have never experienced either
Cameron 05-12-08, 10:07 PM Probably would be a good idea to get out there and see them in person. They look different.

HI Guys,
I can not change the color of the wall or floor finishes. I can block all light coming into the room. Beyond that I need to make do and get the best pj and screen given my environment.
ADvice on both is appreciated.

If you cant use a good PJ to maximum or near maximum effect, you pissing your money away.
Get some demos n(in bright rooms) and borrow some units
rboster 05-13-08, 07:55 AM IMHO, that's a lot of money to spend without demoing the projectors and deciding what technology (ie DLP/LCOS/LCD) looks best to you. They all their pros and cons. I like the look of DLP, but for some it's out of the question, since they fall into a small percentage that see rainbows etc.
frank456 05-13-08, 10:11 PM I have found that most multi purpose livingroom-theater setups have inadequate light control. I love the HD100 but the extra CR is wasted unless you have a bat cave environment.
The Sim2 has the lumens power you need.

I love the HD100 but the extra CR is wasted unless you have a bat cave environment. How do you define a "bat cave environment"? Most people define that as black walls, but on/off CR isn't wasted just from white walls. It is other lighting that wastes on/off CR.
I think there are a lot of livingroom-theater setups where the on/off CR is wasted before it gets dark, but where there are still times a person is watching without other light coming in, at which point the extra on/off CR matters even with white walls, as long as they don't have excessive other lighting. Even LEDs can be fine on equipment, depending on the situation. Some of them are crazy bright (like the manufacturers that like to put those really bright blue LEDs on their stuff), but there are ways to handle those things and not all equipment lights make much difference compared to even the absolute black level of the HD100. I have some equipment lights on in my livingroom combined with original diningroom setup and I can't even see the screen if all other lights are off, it is night, and the projector is off (at least after a minute or so in the dark I tried this with). The HD100 doesn't have an absolute black level even close to that from my testing. I should mention that some of the lights are behind light colored couches, I put some ND material on my receiver's display, and mostly covered the really bright blue LEDs on my DIRECTV DVR, but there are still some equipment lights and before I put the ND material on the receiver at the very back corner and facing forward, I checked how the screen looked with it on and the projector blocked and the black level was down to at least around where it would be with 100k:1 on/off CR or so.

Any views on the Infocus In83
The IN83 has only just been released here in Australia and I am hoping to see it in action some time next week.
Would be interested in other owners opinion

I agree. I wonder where this myth comes from that you need a 'bat cave' to appreciate good contrast. Greg Rogers has answered that question also quite plain and simple: You don't need black walls to appreciate good CR.

There are a few informal reviews in this thread and a few links to some more impressions. My little take on the in83 is in there as well.
I am very impressed so far and glad I chose this projector over the RS1. But this is a very personal and subjective choice as there are pluses and minuses with the technologies and within the technologies differences among the projectors. What is important to you may be different than what is important to someone else. But if you weigh all the pros and cons and decide you want a DLP for the type of picture it throws and are in this price range- the IN83 is hard to beat. And Wow what a crisp, sharp and 3- dimensional picture. Just Awesome.
frank456 05-14-08, 10:40 PM I define 'bat cave' as total light control during the daytime hours. Just my description. I have light colored walls in my dedicated theater but total light control.
Ambient light control is way more important than wall color. I hate black walls but my front screen wall is black.
Check it out at www.Franks-Home-Theatre.piczo.com
I had living room theater setups before but once I had the chance to do a dedicated room I could never go back. Acoustics are never right in large irregular spaces.
Alan Gouger 05-15-08, 12:38 AM Frank very nice theater. I know light colored walls are not typical for a theater but I like the look of your room. The color works. Seating looks comfortable as well. I also went with love seats.
frank456 05-16-08, 09:00 PM Much appreciated Alan.:)
Nice to hear someone else besides myself went with the love seat format.
